Fringe & Purge

Fringe Video 7: Mmmm… Butter

Don’t talk to Fringe playwright Kristen Cantwell about her new work at dinnertime, because you will be overtaken, as I was, with fierce hunger pangs. Because Kristen’s play is the musical cabaret, Butter: A Love Story.

Kristen scored at last year’s Fest with Confessions of an Invisible Woman (Here’s Trey‘s video interview.), and if my stomach is any indicator, Butter will repeat that triumph.

Has anyone heard anything about Solas Nua’s fringe offering? Their swimming pool piece last year was way fringey.

Indeed! This year, the group is going forward into the past, “using 19th century techniques in a play with live music, melodrama and puppetry” for the play “The Drunkard.” They’re at Georgetown’s Devine Studio Theater.

This play is to die for. I watched it, and it was heaven sent. Very imaganitive,

Kristin is a dynamite performer. Her ability to get intimate with an audience is only bested by her comic timing. I saw this at the Saturday opening! Her voice is not a million dollar match, but she can sell a song. The character she has created is a wicked take off on the many “celebrity” chefs of the food network, but the songs are real and the recipes… Well you just have to go see for yourself!

    Butter…A Love Story

This musical was more about the protagonist’s image and self-esteem issues rather than a comical look at celebrity chefs. I was sad that the TV chef gimmick just provided a backdrop.

I agree that Kristin’s voice pitches a bit, but she is absolutely able to hold an audience and encourage participation.
