Hello Craft is excited to be partnering with the One of a Kind Show & Sale and will have a booth at OOAK’s holiday show at Pier 94 in New York from December 11th-13th.  We’ll host a Make Something Awesome area with hands on craft projects and conduct shopper interviews along with a workshop or two.  More details will be announced in the coming months.

If you are interested in exhibiting, space is still available,  but hurry!  Artist criteria and application info is available here.  Contact Libby Hanna at 312.527.7757 or lhanna@mmart.com, or Courtney Walsh at 646.778.3236 or cwalsh@mmart.com to find out what is needed to qualify for the show.

Here’s some more info about the OOAK NYC show from their site:

Launching December 11-13, 2009 at Pier 94, the One of a Kind Show and Sale NYC will be an extraordinary holiday shopping show featuring the best in fine art and fine craft from hundreds of unique artists, artisans and designers from across North America.  Each item for sale at the show will be made by hand, one piece at a time, and every artist represented will be in attendance—offering shoppers the wonderful opportunity to buy pieces directly from the artist who created it and support the independent artist community.

And, if you haven’t had a chance to listen to the latest episode of the Hello Craft podcast, check it out.  This special episode is sponsored by our friends at One of a Kind Show and features an awesome story about how Tina Seamonster learns to embroider and relax.

More DC Fall shows

Whew! If you wanted, you could have a really busy fall here in DC!

New shows and markets are popping up all over. Check out the Capitol Marketplace Events page.

They are sponsoring shows on the grounds of one of my favorite buildings in the city – the old Carnegie Library (The Square Market and Art on the Square) as well as the “new” neighborhoods surrounding Nationals Park (Canal Park Market and RiverFRONT Harvest Fest).

I am a little unclear as to what the fees might be to apply for the shows/markets and it looks like they might be accepting vendors for the weekly markets on a rolling basis. But you can send them an email at info@capitolmarketplaceevents.com.

Apply for Arts on Foot!

What was once just a celebration of the arts in the Penn Quarter area, Arts on Foot has become a HUGE central event.

The past few years, an ever growing market of artists and craft vendors has popped up at Arts on Foot. Last year, the vending expanded to Friday and Saturday. This year, the vending creeps even earlier into the week, with opportunities to sell your wares Thursday, Friday and Saturday- the 10th-12th of September.

This year, the application process is being handled by Diverse Markets- lead by Eastern Market artist Michael Berman.  Go to their website at http://www.diversemarkets.net/ for information and to apply.

Hurry! Deadline is the 17th of July!

Application requires a non-refundable $25 fee

Artists can apply for only Saturday the 12th or all three days.  Artists may be accepted for only Saturday or all three days. Booth fee is $150 for saturday or $350 for all three days. Included in the fee is a tent, secuirty for tent overnight, and parking for one car downtown during the event.

Apply for Crafty Bastards 2009!

Applications for Crafty Bastards 2009 are now being accepted. The deadline to apply for booth space is July 5, 2009.  Get more info and submit your Crafty Bastards application here.

There is a $10 non-refundable application fee. The jury will review and score all completed entries on various criteria from design and craftsmanship to saleability and alternative subject matter.  Applicants will be notified of their status by July 20th.  If accepted, the booth fee is $120 and will be due July 31st.  The vendor list will be announced in August.  Crafty Bastards will take place Saturday, October 3rd from 10am-5pm.

In the past we have received between 300 and 400 applications for the 100+ spots available at the show.  Vendors from previous years are not given special consideration or guaranteed a space at this years’ show. All applicants are strongly encouraged to submit clear images and descriptive work statements.  Tina posted some craft show application tips here and here.

El Jefe’s Obama Rockstar Posters

1. Is there a specific product that you will be selling at the fair that you would like to talk about?

I will be selling mostly concert posters I was asked to do from around DC and some from NYC, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. Some of the latest work has been posters for My Morning Jacket (including super limited-edition variant versions), Silver Jews, and Melvins. I also was asked by the AIGA in Florida to do a poster endorsing a candidate. I decided to do a poster for Barack Obama which is a play off of an AC/DC album. We will be selling the poster with profits going to the Obama campaign.

2. Does this product have an origin story? Did the idea come to you in a dream or through a portal or other strange way?

The Obama piece took a lot of directions. I originally wanted to do a “serious” piece about the election. Being in and around DC, there are so many issues that I have opinions on, yet articulating those opinions in a graphic manner is difficult for me. My sketch book has varying degrees of imagery from the passive to the angry; pictures of tree depicting hope to a sketch of Bush and McCain hugging with the words “Fuck You Buddies” under it. In the end, I decided to do something that made me and my friends smile. I used the AC/DC motif because of the constant attacks by the Republicans calling Obama a rockstar and figured it is better to embrace the name than run away from it.

3. What famous personality (alive or dead, real or imagined) would most likely be found wearing/holding/admiring this product? Why?

Maybe Henry Rollins? He likes both AC/DC and Barack and would possibly get the humour of it. Even if he did not smile.

4. Convince me that this piece should be one of only 3 things I could take with me to a deserted island!

It is made of paper and can be used to start a fire, the metallic silver ink can be used to signal planes and you can fend off tigers by giving them paper cuts!
