Our Morning Roundup: Hemp (Not Pot) History Edition

As I chew on this sticky, hemp-seed infused  granola bar–which is surprisingly not awful (and an "excellent source of Omega-3," according to the label)–an actor dressed in an elaborate George Washington costume is preparing to dump a 50-pound bag of hemp seeds on the doorstep of the U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder's office.
Is he trying to [...]

Drunk Bicyclists, Beware: Court Upholds DUI Conviction

Can you ride a bicycle while wasted? Practically, maybe, but legally, no, according to a D.C. Court of Appeals ruling issued today.
Police reportedly found Baker N. Everton yelling on a Petworth sidewalk on January 12, 2007. He was slurring his words and could "hardly stand," according to court papers. Then he went to his bike:
"The officers [...]

Our Morning Roundup: How Was Your Drive To Work?

WaPo thinks the real test for Mayor Adrian Fenty comes right now during your morning commute. He's already failed mine. While I haven't walked to WCP headquarters just yet, I can bet that the last bit of sidewalk on Mount Pleasant Street hasn't been cleared nor has the mucky stretch of park nor the bus [...]

Our Morning Roundup: Can DCPS Heat Its Classrooms?

Almost as awesome as the real Arenas' twitter posts, FakeShanahan writes via Twitter yesterday:
"Wait a minute. Clinton Portis is on this team?"
"Wow DC is as cold as Denver. I don't see what the big difference is going to be. Oh yeah, all the losing."
"I'm ironing my clothes for tomorrow's Press Conference [...]

Confessions of a Wi-Fi Loafer – Xmas Cheer Edition!

Last night – which was technically the night before, the night before Christmas – Qualia Coffee on Georgia Avenue stayed open later than usual, and more than a few people were stirring in there.
In part, owner Joel Finkelstein’s gesture was community-spirited: He was helping his neighbors maintain the necessary caffeine levels for frenzied last minute [...]

Confessions of a Wi-Fi Loafer – Should Cafés Pull the Plug on Limitless Surfing?

This week, The Modern Times Coffeehouse has become the first coffee shop in the District to throw down the gauntlet at Wi-Fi loafers: The management has covered up some of the electrical outlets in an attempt to herd its laptop loiterers toward communal tables, where they can still plug in.
This particular gambit was first seen [...]

Our Morning Roundup: Should Bloomingdale Become A Gated Community?

DC Teacher Chic stresses about having to monitor at-risk students. A huge number of your colleagues just got canned. And you get to complain about your job on a blog. Maybe you should quit. Here's what they wrote:
"I have the fortunate task of progress monitoring at least three-quarters of the students in my classroom. To [...]

Petworth Commenters Mobilize Against “Poor People”

Last year, Central Union Mission attempted to bring its 128-bed homeless shelter to the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue, but was shot down by Ward 1 Council member Jim Graham and a group of residents in a rather shameless case of NIMBYism. "Good news!!! Central Union Mission is not moving to Georgia Avenue in Ward [...]

Vernon and Vontae Davis, DC’s Best Brother Act, Come Home for Football Camp

There's been a change in the sports pecking order around here, for those who haven't noticed. "DC was a basketball town," says Vernon Davis "It's a football town now."
You gonna argue with him?
Davis, a 6'3", 253-pound former University of Maryland star and now tight end with the San Francisco 49ers, has done his share to [...]

Petworth Fourth of July 2009

Here's a few minutes of what freedom sounded like this year from a porch in Petworth.
Every Independence Day, the show on the streets gives me giggles and makes me fall in love with my neighborhood all over again.
