5:51 p.m.: D.C. Police Department spokesperson Traci Hughes is not able to confirm that two teenagers have died. She says one has died from their injuries, the other is in critical condition.

5:39 p.m.: WJLA says two are dead. Lanier says that there were plenty witnesses and implored them to step forward. Cops are on the lookout for a black SUV with tinted windows. It is unclear whether it was a driveby shooting or whether gunfire was exchanged. Multiple, different shell casings were found on the scene. WTOP has more from Lanier. WaPo has an update with Fenty's comments.

Original Post:

D.C. Police are responding to a shooting that has left one dead and four injured, the Washington Post is reporting. A police spokesperson says that the shooting took place along the 5300 block of Clay Terrace NE. District government set out the following text alert:

"MPD confirms a multiple shooting of five juveniles in the 5300 blk of Clay Terrace NE., 5300 black Clay Terrace NE, has been close due to police activities."

There is a crime camera on that block.

The Fire Department is saying at least three are critical injured, WJLA is reporting. All the victims were males.

5:03 p.m. WaPo has this update:

"In all, five people have been shot, one fatally and at least three have serious injuries, said Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the D.C. Fire and EMS Department. All the victims are in their teens and 20s, authorities said.

D.C. Police spokesman Quintin Peterson said the shooting happened shortly after 4 p.m. in the 5300 block of Clay Terrace in Northeast D.C."

WUSA is also on the scene.

Pat Collins is on the scene as well. All victims were teenagers. The shooting involved an exchange of gunfire. Police found a weapon on the scene, say shooting may have involved a gunfight between rival gangs. Police are looking for a black Chevy Tahoe. Mayor Fenty and Chief Lanier are both on the scene. Fenty is expected to speak.

Some background: In October 2008, law enforcement had arrested 22 on drug and weapons charges in Clay Terrace.

The Washington Post is reporting that yesterday afternoon, a teenager was fatally stabbed at 14th and Newton Streets NW. This is a particularly busy intersection with plenty of pedestrian foot traffic. There are tons of people either waiting at the bus stops along 14th Street or milling about businesses like Target, Sticky Fingers, Best Buy, etc. The Post writes:

"The teenager was found about 4:30 p.m. in the roadway near 14th and Newton streets NW. Officials said their best information indicated that he was 14 or 15. His name was not immediately available....

A witness said that about the time of the stabbing, he saw several youths, one with a knife, two others with belts around their fists, urging each other on as they raced up 14th Street."

This follows the homicide on Kenyon Street. And the fatal shooting on Champlain Street. Both happened earlier this week.

The Post account of the fatal stabbing goes on to state:

"[The witness] said the youth with the knife carried it in his right hand and wore a mask and a black hood. As the man waited to cross the street, he said, he saw one of the youths pull off his belt and wrap it around a hand.

There 'must have been a dozen or so kids who ran northbound,' the man said. There was 'a huge group that took off,' the man said. 'I couldn't make out who was chasing who.' After the stabbing, someone knocked on the door of a firehouse on 14th Street to summon aid.

Someone who went to help the youth and declined to be identified by name said the victim appeared to be unable to speak and 'was going downhill fast.'"

Meanwhile Colbert King is reporting about two different agencies with two different views on youth crime statistics.

Update 12/16: The teenage victim has been identified. Here's WJLA's account:

"Gionvanni Sanchez, of the 1300 block of Underwood Street NW, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, after a fight broke out between two groups of teens at the intersection of 14th and Newton Streets."

In a separate Green Line-related incident, a teen was stabbed with an ice pick on Saturday night. He was stabbed outside of the U Street Metro. He then rode the train up to Columbia Heights. He suffered minor injuries, according to NBC.

Fox breaks down the pre-ice-pick moments:

"An argument at a Metro station ended with a stabbing Saturday night. Metro says that a group of young people were arguing and began fighting at the U Street station at 13 and U Streets."

D.C. Police are sick of one teenage robbery suspect who has allegedly committed multiple crimes. The police department is so sick of this kid, they've got you all pissed off too. The police--OK, Third District Inspector Edward Delgado--wants you to email Peter Nickles to do who knows what to this kid. You want this thug in cuffs. You want this thug behind bars. And maybe worse. Prince of Petworth has joined the witch hunt. OffSeventh has raised a torch. The No BS Zone has started marching in lockstep, too.

Well, stop it. If you bothered to read the fine print of the Post piece, you would know that this teenager has been convicted of nothing, and was recently ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial. Yes, there are 21 robberies attached to his undisclosed name. But this kid doesn't need a bunk in a crummy, over-crowded youth facility.

The kid needs empathy. He needs a city social worker to step up. So if you wanna e-mail somebody, e-mail the Department of Mental Health or Child and Family Services.

Nickles was right in ignoring your e-mails.

Five students were hospitalized this afternoon after a fight broke out at Anacostia High, according to a Washington Post account:

"Police said the violence was part of a series of disturbances today at Anacostia High School, on 16th Street SE. Three students suffered superficial cuts, apparently caused by a knife, one had an asthma attack, and another was hurt in the fight, they said.

Assistant Police Chief Diane Groomes, who was on the scene, said that the trouble started at 12:40 p.m. when students got into a fight on the second floor of the school. As that fight was ending, someone started a small fire, officials said. One report said the fire was in a trash can, but additional details were not immediately available."

Sad. That's just one more bit of juvenile mayhem that's been going on lately. Now we know what Colbert King's next column will be about.
