In a somewhat surprising move, the D.C. Chamber of Commerce has not endorsed incumbent Ward One Councilmember Jim Graham for re-election. Instead, the business folks have thrown their weight behind challenger Jeff Smith.
Graham campaign poo-bah Chuck Thies had this reaction via e-mail:
"Not surprising at all. What has the Chamber of Commerce ever done for Ward [...]

Bryan Weaver Snags Latino Caucus Endorsement

Maybe the race for D.C. Council's Ward One seat will actually be a real race. Last night, Bryan Weaver received the D.C. Latino Caucus endorsement over incumbent Councilmember Jim Graham and challenger Jeff Smith. Weaver notes in his press release on the big win:
"Last night at its endorsement meeting, the D.C. Latino Caucus overwhelmingly [...]

Jim Graham On Developer Donations: ‘Ain’t No Corruption In Me’

Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham has managed to raise more than $210,000, according to recent campaign finance reports. You can bet that the coffers of his challengers–Bryan Weaver and Jeff Smith–are tiny in comparison. Graham's major moolah seems to imply he has some moneyed friends. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that. Well, unless one of those friends was once [...]

Sign Tampering Scandal a ‘Charade,’ Jim Graham Campaigner Says

Ward 1 Democratic candidate Jeff Smith continues to accuse incumbent D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham of tampering with his political signs.
Graham's camp maintains there is  "zero hard evidence" of any such malfeasance.

Smith, Weaver Gang Up On Graham at Ward 1 Council Debate

D.C. Council hopeful Jeff Smith last night immediately went on the attack during a debate between the candidates for the Ward 1 council seat, hosted by the Kalorama Citizens Association at Goodwill Baptist Church, accusing incumbent Councilmember Jim Graham of sabotaging Smith's campaign efforts by tearing down street signs.
Graham denied the allegation. "If you have a video of [...]

Bryan Weaver to Officially Challenge Jim Graham in Ward 1

UPDATE, 4/23
Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham, seeking a third fourth term this fall, is facing another motivated challenger.
Bryan Weaver, a community activist and advisory neighborhood commissioner in Adams Morgan, is set to announce his run at noon on Saturday. The kickoff is being held in Weaver's stomping grounds—Walter Pierce Park, home base for the basketball [...]

Barry Drug Supplier Now Supplying D.C. Campaigns With Donations

In the annals of D.C. political history, the name Hassan H. Mohammadi has been all but forgotten—relegated to the depths of LexisNexis and a couple of mentions in Dream City, that indispensible chronicle of '80s Washington.
But 20 years ago, Mohammadi was the talk of the town—a friend of Marion Barry's throughout the mayor-for-life's '80s party [...]

Jeff Smith Will Make Graham Challenge Official

Former school board member Jeff Smith says he's ready for a full-on challenge to Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham.
"I'm not positive yet, but we're probably going to file in the next couple of days," says Smith, who has run an exploratory campaign since December.
He's already on the attack: In a posting today on his Web [...]

Jeff Smith Officially Exploring Ward 1 Bid

The list of potential challengers of Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham expands.
Jeff Smith, the education activist and ex-school-board member, is joining the fray.
Smith, like Adams Morgan activist Bryan Weaver, is officially "exploring" a challenge to the bowtied, recently embattled incumbent. But Smith's stepped it up a bit—he's got a super-slick Web site, complete with super-slick [...]
