According to the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics, 34 people voted for a write-in candidate in ANC 6B08 yesterday. That might mean 34 people voted for Arthur Delaney, the pro-single-beers candidate.

Unfortunately for single beers, over 800 people voted for four-term incumbent Neil Glick. He sent an email bragging about it to his family and friends with a little note to Arthur Delaney at the bottom.

Thank you, Arthur for your spirited campaign.

I just checked the unofficial results this morning, where I reicieved 818 votes -- the highest amount of votes for a candidate in ANC 6B, and second highest in all of Ward 6, and the 8th highest votes received in all of the City for ANC Commissioners. You might have received as many as 34 votes.

I am glad you interjected a discussion about the sale of singles in our neighborhood. And the voters made their choice: they support the ban on singles.

Getting the endorsement of your employer, the Washington City Paper is very impressive, and I commend you for that.

And choosing to put yourself out there and being a candidate takes guts. I wish more people in America would do the same. We'd have a better political system if we did.

Can I buy you a six pack?

Neil Glick
5 term ANC Commissioner 6B08

Delaney has big news. His mom has joined his campaign!

"My mom is here campaigning with me," Delaney says. "She voted for me over in a different SMD (Single Member District)."

And Delaney's opponent? He's nowhere in sight.

"I'm not sure where he is," Delaney says.

I ask if he thinks his opponent is runnin' scared. This is Delaney's response: "He damn well should be. He's in deep shit."

We will be posting updates on Delaney's ANC race throughout the night. Stay tuned.

"At least a dozen people said they voted for me," Delaney GChatted, "[and] not a single person said they wouldn't vote for me."

Is Delaney headed for a blowout? Contacted seconds later, also by chat, the candidate said that much of his support is probably due to the single-beer plank of his political platform.

"Sometimes you just want ONE!" Delaney said. "The slogan resonates with everybody."

Delaney says he plans to spend the afternoon addressing voters' hunger and desire for change. "I'm home for a snack and to put on my jeans, which are finally dry."

ANC 6B08 is one of the District of Columbia's great bellwether jurisdictions. Long known as Barney Circle or east Capitol Hill or just plain "D.C., man," 6B08 is the land of low-slung town homes, down-to-earth political activists, and well-kept front lawns, not to mention the occasional astro-turfed front stoop. Sandwiched among RFK Stadium, the campus of the now-defunct D.C. General Hospital, and the more prosperous western Capitol Hill, 6B08 is a proving ground for politicians across the city--a dynamic that makes it a particularly critical ANC race in 2008.

Yesterday afternoon, CP contributor Arthur Delaney launched his write-in campaign for his local ANC post. He announced his historic candidacy on this blog.

At 11 a.m., City Desk checked in with Delaney's campaign. We reached the young man at his apartment/campaign headquarters.

Delaney tell us that he went by his precinct at Payne Elementary this morning to "just scope it out" before going to the gym (just like Obama does most mornings).

But Delaney's campaign hit a snag. He says he is currently washing his pants.

"My washing machine is about to explode," Delaney says. "It's just old and the spin cycle kind of gets jammed. You have to reach in there by hand. I have to turn the spin cycle around by hand. It gets stuck and it makes this burning smell."

Delaney admits to another crucial problem. He has not made his campaign fliers. "I have to go to Kinko's to get them printed," Delaney says. He adds that he will be at his precinct in a "couple hours."

"This is a last minute campaign," Delaney explains. "Carol Schwartz, who is waging a write-in campaign, got started at the last minute. According to polls, she's doing well also. Now she has somebody at Payne. I'm going to stand with that guy. For everyone that says they're going to vote for me, I'll give them a pencil with my name on it."

You have pencils? "Yeah, I've had them for a long time. I never knew what to do with them but now I know."

Delaney is optimistic: "I have received several pledges of support on the Hill East listserv."

City Desk questioned the fact that he isn't at his precinct. That maybe it would have been a better idea to wash his pants the day before the election. "I know my opponent is not there either," Delaney argues. "He's not going to be there until 5:30."

City Paper has never endorsed candidates as an institution, typically leaving that job to crack political reporter Loose Lips. And Loose Lips has never endorsed candidates in advisory neighborhood commission races, considering those pissant offices well below his pay grade.

But just as the Chicago Tribune threw away decades of pro-Republican tradition to endorse Barack Obama this year, City Paper is forced to reexamine its course by the prospect of having a community advocate as talented, as focused, as driven as Arthur Delaney serve the residents of east Capitol Hill. Not endorsing Mr. Delaney would be an unforgivable error of historic proportions.

Mr. Delaney's singular focus on single-beer sales reflects a preternatural political talent, one that can bring the people of 6B08 together under one principal: Can't we all just have a beer?

Don't get us wrong: Mr. Delaney isn't just a one-beer man. He's been seen enjoying multiple beers from time to time, on the concrete pad in front of his apartment, as well as at local watering holes such as Tune Inn, Trusty's, Tune Inn, Capitol Lounge, and Tune Inn.

But Mr. Delaney is a singles man at heart. Like all the residents of 6B08, he is a hard worker---we at Washington City Paper can absolutely testify to his devotion as a freelance journalist (to wit, his willingness to pursue this assignment)---and he deserves to buy a single beer for his refreshment after a long day's toil, as do we all.

So we must join Mr. Delaney in his cri de coeur: Sometimes, you just want one!

This afternoon Southeast Capitol Hill resident Arthur Delaney kicked off his write-in campaign for a spot on the local advisory neighborhood commission. Delaney, who is me, is campaigning entirely on a pro-single-beers platform for 6B08.

Lately, the local political establishment is united in its insistence that corner stores not sell single cans or bottles of beer and malt liquor. Delaney has two simple questions:

What is a person supposed to do if he or she wants a beer but can't afford a six pack?

What if a person just wants one beer?

The answer to these questions is that a person who has ever been or ever will be in either situation must vote for Arthur Delaney in 6B08 tomorrow. Arthur Delaney has the necessary maverick qualities to begin to reverse the nannyish tide that will outlaw single sales in early 2009.

After the jump, more details, plus Arthur Delaney's first campaign video.

In a surprising development, the office of Ward 6 D.C. Councilmember Tommy Wells inexplicably endorsed Arthur Delaney, because, according to Wells chief of staff Charles Allen, Wells approves of the idea of drinking just one beer.

Sometimes, you just want one.

UPDATE: Charles Allen writes to say that Tommy Wells does not, in fact, endorse Arthur Delaney. Allen writes, "My actual quote was that Tommy supports the idea of enjoying one beer, not that he endorses your candidacy….perhaps an overeager candidate has stretched my words little too far."
