Just How Many D.C. Police Department Officers Are There?

I got a lengthy D.C. Police Department document today which includes a bunch of charts and stats on its rank and file. If the figures are correct, the doc goes a long way toward clearing up one issue that has plagued this reporter (and, well, the police union): How many officers does the police department [...]

D.C. Police Seize More Guns

The D.C. Police Department continues its sly campaign to make everyone—especially Republicans—aware that there are guns, guns, guns floating around the city. In today's edition, a handgun gets turned in to 2D, a BB gun is recovered, and plenty of ammo is found.

D.C. Police to Change Handling of Mental Illness Cases

D.C. police have decided to overhaul how it responds to mentally ill residents in crisis and police brass have requested training assistance from the Department of Mental Health, says DMH director Stephen T. Baron.
The decision follows two police-shooting deaths in recent months involving mentally ill victims. In November, police shot and killed David Kerstetter in [...]

Fenty held a press conference at D.C. police headquarters to announce that an arrest warrant had been issued for illegal Salvadoran immigrant Ingmar Guandique in the May 2001 murder of congressional intern Chandra Levy. It’s All About The Guns

So yesterday, the Senate passed a bill that would give us a vote in the House. Real Representation. But there's a catch—a gun amendment that would strip the District of its gun laws. The Post writes:
"Some D.C. officials said it was ironic that the Senate bill granted the city full representation in the House while [...]

This afternoon, I checked in with Jackie Van Croft. On January 31, her son William went missing. He's still missing. William has Asperger's Syndrome. He disappeared on the one-year anniversary of his father's death.
"The police are working on all leads," Van Croft says. "They have been getting tips, people have been calling in the tip [...]

Remembering David Kerstetter

During last week's oversight hearing on the Department of Mental Health, there was an opportunity for Councilmember David Catania to fire up his inner prosecutor and start asking some tough questions about what happened on the morning of Nov. 6.
On that morning, two police officers responded to David Kerstetter's Logan Circle home. The two cops [...]

Forget about the terrible economy. The D.C. Police Department is hiring. Starting salary is $48, 715 per year with plenty of benefits and vacation days. The department writes:

What If Chandra Levy’s Killer Is This Guy?

I really hope the D.C. Police Department don't end up arresting this guy for Chandra Levy's murder.

We Feel You Colby

On Saturday, Colby King wrote another column addressing youth violence and the problems with DYRS. In his column, he spoke for journalists all over—but especially here in the District—about all those columns getting zero respect from the people that could actually fix the juvenile justice system. In other words, he's spilled a lot of ink [...]

On January 31, William Van Croft IV went missing from his District home. He was last spotted that afternoon along the 1300 block of G Street SE. On Feb. 11, the D.C. Police Department finally posted a press release on William. He is still missing.
Today, City Desk spoke with William's mother Jackie Van Croft.

The D.C. Police Department’s Sunday Greeting

I wanted to see if there was an update posted on William Van Croft–the missing boy the D.C. Police were so late in spreading the word on. When I tried the department's website, I just got this:
"The website is currently offline for maintenance.  It will be back online shortly.  We apologize for any inconvenience this [...]

Venting Over The Case Of A Missing Teenager

Long-time schools activist Cherita Whiting forwarded this message onto one of the listservs. It requires a repeated airing here. Whiting wrote was spreading alarm about a boy, William Van Croft IV, who went missing from his home on Jan. 31.
According to D.C. police, the boy is still missing. Two detectives have been assigned to the [...]
