DMV Inspectors Busted For Taking Bribes From Cabbies
So Bruce Johnson does this big story last night about how cab drivers are bribing DMV inspectors. The cabbies are leaving wads of cash in the hopes that the inspectors would ignore their busted tail light or broken rear-view mirror or whatever. Johnson has pictures of $20s left in taxi ash trays ready to be taken by city workers. The cabbies would tell the inspectors that they got lunch money for them inside. One anonymous inspector says they were bribed as much as $50. Five inspectors have already been fired over the bribe charges.
DCist hits on some of the highlights: "One inspector he quotes in the story estimates 70 to 80 percent of cab drivers offer bribes to DMV employees."
I thought all cabbies are poor since they complain all the time about the switch to meters. How do they have all this cash to giveaway?
