Spitzer Case: Good for Statehood
This could be a bit of a stretch, but I am going there anyhow.
According to the very early reporting on the Spitzer disaster, the feds have records on the N.Y. guv’s use of prostitution services on a Feb. 13 trip to the District. He stayed in a hotel that night, reportedly the Mayflower, and dialed up some services.
Well, if the feds see fit to perhaps prosecute the guy for his misdeeds, they would use something called the Mann Act of 1910, which criminalizes the act of taking someone between the states for the purposes of prostitution.
So Spitzer could be a back-door route to the status that D.C. has deserved for centuries.
Shop Locally, Gov.
Well I for one am shocked and appalled at this gothic turn of events in Eliot Spitzer’s life. Not so much for what he allegedly did but because if the allegations are true, this man BROUGHT a prostitute into Washington, D.C. We have our own prostitutes here, thanks very much, Mr. Big City, and I doubt there’s anything fancy New York prostitutes can do that our homegrown talent can’t.

Dershowitz on Spitzer
Dershowitz: “What I like about the [Spitzer] statement is it has the right priorities.”
“I think this is less than a misdemeanor”
“I can’t believe Eliot used public money.”
“This is one man going to a prostitute…”
More Dershowitz:
“At worst, he’s a john, he’s a customer.” Dershowitz takes issue with NYTimes headline saying that E.S. was linked to prostitution ring.
More MSNBC watch:
Dershowitz tries to minimize the misdeeds
“In Europe, this wouldn’t even make the back pages of the paper.”
Turn On Your TV Now, For Cable at its Worst!
The entire television universe is waiting for Spitzer to hit the stage and talk about this double life that he has allegedly lived.
In the meantime, cable just doesn’t know what to do. They have a couple of things to talk about, they have the same New York Times story that you have, and not much more. On MSNBC, just a minute ago, an anchor asked an expert the following question, regarding the prostitutes involved in the ring allegedly linked to the gov:
“What happens to these women who are involved in a federal investigation?”
Is that the story?
Spitzer Missed Lesson of D.C. “Madam”
OK, so the latest in this Eliot Spitzer disaster is that federal authorities have in their custody text messages from the New York governor relating to this “prostitution ring.”
What was this guy thinking? He has based his career on going after organized crime and other really nefarious groups. Well, how do the people of organized crime manage their communications? Certainly not via text message, which leaves a trail a mile wide.
All Spitzer needed to do was check a local news story gone national–the one about D.C. “madam” Deborah Jeane Palfrey. Palfrey’s legendary phone records contained the numbers of the people who bought the services that she and her people rendered. And they embarrassed some important people.
Now, I’ve read my share of profiles on Spitzer, and I can’t remember the part that talked about his penchant for self-destruction.
Did Spitzer do high-priced hooker in D.C.? From NY Times story: “The governor’s travel records show that he was in Washington in mid-February. One of the clients described in court papers arranged to meet with a prostitute who was part of the ring, the Emperors Club VIP on the night of Feb. 13….Mr. Spitzer appeared on a CNBC television show at 7 a.m. the next morning. Later in the morning, he testified before a Congressional committee.”
