Vincent Gray’s First 100 Days: To Be Determined

On WAMU-FM's Politics Hour this afternoon, LL asked D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray what would happen in the first 100 days of a Gray mayoralty. His response:

Is Fenty vs. Gray Like Clinton vs. Dole?

The battle royale that every D.C. political wag had been hoping for is on: Adrian M. Fenty vs. Vincent Gray. It's fairly obvious how challenger Gray is going to cast his candidacy: Youth vs. experience. Alienation vs. collaboration. Arrogance vs. avuncularity.
So how's this thing going to play out for Hizzoner? LL has been searching for [...]

Last-Minute Budget Change Costs Taxpayers ‘Tens of Thousands’

A last-minute change to Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's fiscal 2011 budget proposal this morning will cost taxpayers "in the tens of thousands" of dollars to reprint budget documents, sources tell LL.
The change has to do with the Office of the Tenant Advocate, an office that "advocates for, educates, and provides outreach for" the city's renters. [...]

Fenty Cut Line to Get on Plane, Says Eyewitness

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty rushed back from...well, somewhere, yesterday to hold a press conference more than 24 hours after four were killed in a drive-by shooting.
All Fenty would say about the trip last night was that "it was personal."
But in the age of social media, there are no secrets. LL was forwarded a Facebook post [...]

Fenty Budget Cuts 385 Jobs, Increases Schools Funding

With details still scarce, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's budget proposal holds sacred education and public safety, while finding sundry service cuts and fee hikes to close an approximately $550 million budget gap.
The budget proposal eliminates 385 full-time equivalent positions; a Fenty official estimated than one-half of those positions are already empty, the other half will [...]

Gray on NewsTalk: ‘I Would Be a Very Different Kind of Leader’

This afternoon, Vincent C. Gray gave his first extended interview as a mayoral candidate to NewsChannel 8's Bruce DePuyt.
"I would be a very different kind of leader," Gray said. "I'm an engaging person; I like to reach out to people." He later added: "People are saying, 'OK, I will acknowledge there have been certain things [...]

Police Wanted Drive-By Suspect Locked Up Last Week

UPDATED 11:40 P.M.
In the days leading up to last night's horrendous drive-by shooting in Washington Highlands, police had sought an arrest warrant for one of the men thought to have carried out the crime.
Orlando Simms Carter, 26 20, now under arrest for the deadly drive-by, was suspected by police to have played a part in [...]

Four Shot Dead—Where’s Fenty?

UPDATED 6:15 P.M.
Last night, the District experienced the deadliest act of neighborhood violence in at least 16 years. Thus far, there has been no word on a mayoral press conference.
That's out of character for Mayor Adrian M. Fenty. For instance, when a shooting last fall killed two and wounded three in the Clay Terrace neighborhood [...]

Vincent Gray Files for Mayor Run, Says ‘We Can Do Better’

Vincent C. Gray kicked off his challenge to incumbent Mayor Adrian M. Fenty this afternoon, telling a crowd of more than 100 outside the Frank D. Reeves Center, "We can do better in the District of Columbia."
But that was about all that Gray said.
Aside from a nod to "connecting with every voter that we possibly [...]

With Gray Threatening, Athletes Stand Up for Fenty

When word leaked yesterday that D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray would be running for mayor, political junkies salivated, union officials cheered, and local athletes sure noticed, too.
You see, under Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, it's been a halcyon era for folks who, like Hizzoner, who push themselves to the limit in marathons, triathlons, and competitive [...]
