Nine properties managed by the D.C. Housing Authority including several public housing buildings will get solar panels beginning this year, according to the authority.

On Saturday, DCHA announced that energy company SolarCity will place panels on the buildings, located across the city, which will produce tax credits. The agency added that SolarCity will provide job training to DCHA clients. DCHA notes that the initial list of properties scheduled to get solar panels may change; the installations are set to start in May and be completed by the end of the year. Combined, the buildings feature hundreds of units.

Adrianne Todman, DCHA’s executive director, said in a statement that “the savings we will see from having these solar panels will be used to reinvest in our sites.”

DCHA’s board “recently approved more than $100 million to develop a combined heating and cooling plant, as well as other improvements at 44 properties,” a release points out. “The power plant will build a microgrid that produces enough power to produce 100 percent of the electricity at the Langston Terrace and as much as 15 percent of the electricity at DCHA’s remaining properties, based on feasibility studies.”

The Woodland Terrace and Benning Terrace properties will also get new trees and flowers, DCHA says.
