Pigskins Shame Spiral: Martin O’Malley

SMDH

The Pigskins Shame Spiral is an occasional feature tracking developments related to the name of D.C.'s beloved football team.

Who: Democratic Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley

Change the name? Yep. Why? The governor tweeted today that "it is probably time" to change the name.

Shame Spiral rating: SMDH. By now, everyone is understandably bored of hearing about another Democratic politician saying he or she thinks the team name is offensive and should be changed. In liberal circles, it's such common opinion that saying you're against the team name is rather unremarkable. But for O'Malley, this is actually significant: The football team has its stadium in Landover, which means the state has a big financial incentive to play nice with owner Dan Snyder. (For what it's worth, O'Malley is a Baltimore Ravens fan, so he likely doesn't have any sentimental ties to the team or its name.) O'Malley's Democratic counterpart in Virginia, Gov. Terry McAuliffe, wouldn't denounce the team name, saying his job as governor is to boost economic activity in the state and the team does just that for Virginia, with its headquarters in Ashburn and training camp in Richmond. But will O'Malley use his power as governor to give Snyder some significant financial incentive to change the team name?
