Cory Booker Tweets His Support for D.C. Statehood

The D.C. Statehood movement just received some cyber support from a celebrity senator: New Jersey's Cory Booker.

The activist group Neighbors United for DC Statehood despondently tweeted today that "one of these days we'll get @CoryBooker to tweet his thoughts on #DCStatehood since it's hometown & all."

The group and its founder Josh Burch have been hounding Booker since he was elected senator to show his support for statehood and co-sponsor legislation that would make the District the 51st state.

And today, Booker answered:

"Senator Booker also has a national profile and having his support is imperative," Burch tells City Desk via email. "Other politicians with national profiles such as the President, Senator Warren, and others remain silent on this issue and I find that inexcusable. Maybe his words and deeds will help influence others."

Booker's statement of support was short, of course. He didn't tweet whether he would sign onto the legislation, Delaware Sen. Tom Carper's New Columbia Admission Act. And a spokeswoman for Booker said his office has "nothing to add and will let the tweet stand." But for now, it looks like the statehood activists will settle for an MT.
