Fire Lieutenant Put on Desk Duty Pending Investigation of Medric Mills’ Death

The D.C. fire lieutenant in charge of the truck that allegedly did not respond to pleas for help after an elderly man collapsed outside a fire station on Rhode Island Avenue NE Saturday has been put on desk duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation, a spokesman for D.C. Fire and EMS Department confirms. Officials did not release the lieutenant's name.

Medric Cecil Mills, 77, collapsed Saturday while he was with his daughter and later died. The nearby firefighters reportedly did not assist Mills and instructed his daughter to call 911, saying they could not respond unless they were dispatched.

Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Paul Quander says no such policy exists, and that if rescue personnel were on the scene, they should have responded.

Quander called on the fire department to launch an internal investigation, which he said would be "thorough and quick. "
