Zipcar Members Can Now Park Their Reserved Cars Where They Want for Free

Zipcar members can now park their vehicles in any metered or Residential Parking Permit space free of charge during their reservation time, the ride-share company announced Wednesday.

Members will still have to drop their vehicles off at the designated Zipcar spots at the end of their reservations, but the announcement should help with short-term parking while members use the vehicles. There are currently 850 Zipcar vehicles in the District.

Reggie Sanders, a spokesman for the District Department of Transportation, said that previously, Zipcar members had trouble paying for parking meters on their cell phones—which now accounts for 40 percent of the city's meter transactions—because users need to enter their license plate number to the app in order to pay by phone.

"This added convenience will help make carsharing more convenient (which ultimately helps people reduce the need to own and maintain cars in the District, which helps with our transportation system)," Sanders said via email.
