Local comedian and writer Patrick Tutwiler has been tapped as the new editor of FishbowlDC, the gossipy, Mediabistro-owned blog tracking the foibles and awkward tweets of D.C. journalists. He hasn’t responded to an interview request yet, but in the meantime, Washington City Paper found this recent video of Tutwiler’s stand-up act, in which he self-identifies as a millennial and discusses his attempts to enter the prostitution and drug-dealing professions.
Tutwiler replaces Betsy Rothstein, the somewhat petulant writer who collected a long list of enemies in her tenure, which ended last week.
Update: Tutwiler responded to some questions from City Desk via email, and it looks like he’s planning a clean break from the Rothstein era:
Betsy’s editorial approach was distinct and unique. Indeed she may be the most singular blogging persona in DC. I don’t intend to replicate or match that. My voice will evolve, I’m sure, as I get more comfortable behind the wheel. But you can expect that I’ll try to have as much fun as possible while also serving Washington’s journalism community. I hope to strike a solid balance of information and entertainment to engage and grow our audience while keeping the boys in New York happy.
I’d actually like to direct some more attention to the local and even hyper-local media scene. For example, WCP did some admirable reporting during the shutdown and deserved more recognition for that work. There are also neighborhood blogs and community rags making interesting hires, breaking news and creating excellent content. FishbowlDC’s definition of journalism ought to be expanded beyond TV personalities and boldface bylines.
Tutwiler also said he plans to keep pursuing comedy on the side. He would not reveal his favorite or least favorite area journalists, writing, “I don’t think it’s my job to pick winners and losers—-I’m just here to cover the game. “
