The Name of the Washington Football Team Probably Isn’t Going Anywhere

NFL Says Washington Football Team Name Isn't RacistLeaders of the Oneida Indian Nation said they were "somewhat disappointed" after their meeting today with NFL executives to discuss the Washington football team's name.

The Oneida Indian Nation's Ray Halbritter had a post-meeting press conference with reporters and said the NFL gave no indication that the team name would be changed anytime soon. He added that throughout the meeting the NFL seemed to be defending the use of the name.

"This is not a Dan Snyder issue, it's a civil rights issue, which makes it an issue for the NFL," Halbritter said.

Halbritter said he requested the NFL change its bylaws to ban racial slurs in NFL team names. He also suggested the NFL consider sanctioning Snyder for continuing to use a racial slur in his team name.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was apparently unable to attend today's meeting in New York.

"Our goal is to just get this name changed," Halbritter said. "We're not going away."
