D.C. Basketball Power-Broker Curtis Malone Charged in Drug Investigation

dscn0020For years, Curtis Malone has been the head of DC Assault, a powerhouse D.C. area basketball program. The success of Malone's players has given Malone a national profile, including status as a go-between between players and the colleges that want them and sponsorship for the program from Adidas.

Malone, it seemed, had come a long way since 1991, when he was convicted for distributing crack cocaine. But according to documents filed in federal court today, what Malone once called his "last life" isn't so far behind him.

Malone was arrested Friday in D.C.  as part of a year-long DEA investigation. Agents who searched his home found what's believed to be kilo of cocaine, 100 grams of suspected heroin, a handgun, and unnamed items associated with heroin sales, according to court documents. Malone and another alleged dealer have been charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin.

DEA agents working through an informant were able to make several heroin purchases from a dealer who worked with Malone, according to prosecutors. That enabled them to put a wiretap on Malone's phone.

After pulling over an alleged customer of Malone's who had visited Malone's Upper Marlboro home, officers discovered a kilo of suspected cocaine in the car.

DC Assault didn't respond to a request for comment.

But he served his time and he was turning his life around --exploiting high school aged kids before they got further exploited by the NCAA.

He should be entitled to a lifetime job with the government at 125% of the median salary.

He isn't the only Drug dealing basketball coach.this happens all the time.

This is really unfortunate. This program was suppose to be for the kids of the community and to have the leader involved with such things is no laughing matter. I feel for EVERYONE involved which includes his wife, step-children and his close family and so called friends. How many will stand beside him now or abandon him as if they didn't know him? When is enough really enough?

Nice job, Curtis. For all the good you did, you have smeared your wife, stepson and stepdaughter. In addition to every kid that's ever played for you.

    Fan-frickin'-tastic.

I wonder if Eddie Jordan was involved. He is the new Rutgers coach and with the fiasco they had this summer this could be interesting.

Dam, another ex-convict who didn't learn you can fool some of the people some of time however, you can't fool all of the people consistently. Yup, hell I am smarter that the Law, they can't touch me. Oh well, back to being stupid.

It's truly sad how people are so critical! No, I don't condone selling drugs and I know he was not using the kids or selling to the kids! As soon as something happen, you negative ass bl*ck folks like to kick, criticize or belittle! Get the entire story before you comment or start judging! He will suffer, but you will suffer more in hell for judging. Hey yoou, the one that have so much negative stuff to say, what are you doing for the community, for your child or for yourself?

If I recall, Gary Williams did not want to deal with him and he took a lot of crap for it. Turns out maybe he made the right decision after all.

  • Barry Morase

    Sad to hear!

  • Terrance

You all need to stop! How about we just pray for the man and his family! It is easy to kick folks when they are down!

  • Jamnew44

When former Maryland basketball Coach Gary Williams refused to deal with Malone to recruit players to Maryland, he was roundly criticized by local media for failing to recruit Malone's players.. I guess Gary knew something was up. He probably had heard the rumors swirling around and decided to stay away.

Kick him when he is down? This dude was/is dealing drugs. I have met him and he seems like a cool guy. I agree that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. But if this is true, here is a guy who was helping to create opportunites for young Black men on one hand but, on the other hand, was selling one of the main things that have destroyed the fabric of the Black community.

I do not glorfy drug dealers. The product they sell has harmed my people tremendously.

I'll bet(50K via paypal) 99.9% of the people making comments don't know Curtis Malone, his background, nor his track record of helping young men get opportunities they otherwise would not have been afforded? He founded DC Assault but was not running the organization nor coaching at the time of this incident. So please separate the man from the organization.
Some are quick to vilify, but obviously lack any true insight into the US's so called "war on drugs" which is really a war on brown people. In a country where it is acknowledged that white and black people use drugs at the same rate but blacks make up only 13% of the population yet account for 70-80% of drug arrests!(for reference see Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow")

But the street level dealers are the scapegoat. The number one dealer of drugs in the US are high ranking govnm't officials and the wealthy who own the planes , boats and subs that transport the narcotics from Peru and Afghanistan. Remember these narcotics are imported, Curtis didn't manufacture them.
Check the facts: just google "money laundering and banks" and see how many fines and penalties BOA, Chase, Citi and other financial institutions paid because they were caught laundering drug money but none of these "white" collar criminals ever go to jail and no one seems to care.
Check your history and know that ALL groups in the USA engage in illegal activities now and in the past. Poverty is usually the common thread. It wasn't black people running alcohol during prohibition, nor are they starting meth labs in Appalachia. But White supremacy ensures that brown/black people will be dealt with in a criminal manner instead of the clinical approach afforded whites.
Finally let me state for the record I know Curtis Malone, I am the parent of a former DCA student/athlete and because we recognized the potentially exploitative nature of AAU -if you're child isn't in the "Elite" category- we chose to monitor DCA and it's coaches very closely and believe it or not, Curtis Malone was probably their most polished and knowledgeable asset for DCA at the time. He is no saint, but who among us is!? And as a person of African descent who's ancestors were LEGALLY brought to these shores against their will, and LEGALLY worked for FREE as slaves for 400+ years- I operate on the Dred Scott
verdict in reverse- "Whites have NO laws which a Black man is obligated to respect!" (Just don't get caught.lol)
Sorry for the volume but I had to squash some of the insane rhetoric being spewed on this board.

I wonder what Mr. Eric Holder has to say about this since he wants to let the drug dealers out of prison early. This is a good example of why this or any of the other policies from the Obama crowd will not work.

  • dapper

95 percent of the crime in D.C.is drug related...murder...robbery...moms selling babies...crack addicted babies...ruining families black and white and a host of other things...guilt is not decided by me and if it's true then he will pay the price like every other convicted dealer...I pray for the truth in what ever form it comes.

  • Phil

Fact-check: UnderArmour sponsors DC Assault not adidas. So for the Maryland fans riding Gary's nut-sack for his principles, please realize that UnderArmour is up Maryland's butt like a thong and you people have NO problem taking that money. Money that Malone allegedly used to buy drugs.

Second, the Maryland smear campaign that Gary used was also used as an excuse by him to explain why Maryland didn't get kids like, oh, Kevin Durant. And a host of other great players that had never been in trouble. I'm fine with Gary not wanting to deal with Curtis Malone for whatever reason, but don't tell me the best players you can get are fucking Landon Milbourne, Sean Moseley and Dino Gregory. Come on, son.
