Washington Post on Hoodies: Perfect and Utilitarian, or the Uniform of Thugs?
Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen wrote this morning that Trayvon Martin was killed because he was wearing "a certain uniform," one that he tells Politico are "what's worn by a whole lot of thugs."
"The hoodie: the perfect utilitarian piece of clothing. Stay warm and comfy cozy in your pullover Hooded Sweatshirt."
Since the copy doesn't say "stay alive," maybe there's no literal conflict between Cohen's notion that hoodies are for thugs and his employer's notion that hoodies are perfect. (Between the column and his comments to Politico, it's hard not to wonder if for Cohen, the tragedy of Martin's death is that it makes Cohen feel like a racist for thinking young black men in hoodies are obviously dangerous.)
