Tommy Wells Makes It Official: He’s Launching His Mayoral Campaign Saturday

And then there were two: Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells just announced in an email that he'll kick off his campaign for mayor on Saturday, joining Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser as a candidate in next year's Democratic primary.

Wells, whose intentions have been clear for months, will launch his campaign at noon this Saturday at Starburst Plaza, the intersection of H Street NE, Benning Road, Maryland Avenue, Florida Avenue, 15th Street, and Bladensburg Road. It's also the intersection of wards 5 and 6—likely a symbolic attempt to bridge his strong support in his home ward with his limited support in poorer wards 5, 7, and 8.

"I’m running because I know we can clean up the corruption in city government and bring the same success we’ve achieved in Ward 6 to the rest of the city," Wells said in his announcement email.

Wells has held "listening tours" in all eight wards in recent weeks. At one at the Latin American Youth Center in Ward 1, he emphasized a few main campaign themes: cutting teen crime in half, reducing government corruption, and, of course, the motto of his exploratory-committee-cum-not-quite-campaign: "Building a Livable Walkable D.C."

That message is likely to resonate well with smart-growthy voters in the central neighborhoods of the city, but Wells will have his work cut out for him in persuading both wealthier, car-reliant voters west of Rock Creek Park and poorer voters east of the Anacostia that he has their interests at heart.

Bowser announced her candidacy at her childhood home in North Michigan Park in March. Fellow councilmembers Jack Evans (Ward 2) is also thought to be interested in running, as is David Catania (at-large), who could run in the general election as an independent. And the big wild card is the incumbent, Vince Gray, who's presided over strong economic growth but is surrounded by allegations of impropriety in his 2010 campaign. Gray hasn't given any indication of whether he'll run for re-election.

I say anyone but Tommy Wells! Hopefully this campaign will fail and he will subsequently no longer be on the city council. bye bye Tommy

  • tntdc

Of course Gray's given indications he's running: a 13% raise for public employees, a $1.4B construction program for contractors, and giving away parking requirements to developers for nothing in return. He'll probably have (and need) a campaign chest multiples of any previous one.

Evans will run to siphon votes from Wells.

Even so, and even though Wells is no dynamo, his chances against Gray in the primary are at least even. Catania's chances in the general are a little under even.

    What a joke!

You can't be serious. This southern Alabama transplant is out of his mind if he thinks he's going to be the Mayor of Washington DC. This guy is brainless to say the least and is so phony. I guess the best thing from him running for Mayor is that after Wells gets decimated city-wide, he will lose his seat on the City Council and we'll finally get rid of him once and for all. Good riddance!

  • truth hurts

I'll be watching to see if Wells walks the reformer walk, or if he only talks the reformer talk. Don't accept lobbyist, government contractor, and corporate campaign contributions, and he'll have my attention. Otherwise, forget it.

  • FormerBrownSupporter

I agree with both comments so far. Wells needs to go! And One City is the only way to go.

  • noodlez

    OHH ONE OTHER THING.

    TOMMY WELLS IS SOME SHIT!

  • WMJ

I have no respect for Wells a councilman especially during his chairmanship of the Human Services Committee. He is spineless and indecisive. I will campaign against him being mayor of the District and will recruit others to do the same.....

I support Tommy. I'll be there Saturday. I've actually never met him but I've followed him closely in the news these last few years. Tommy Wells has a bold vision for a walkable DC with great transit options. I live in a bit of a transit desert I think he would make my life better. Bowser just wants a job. Gray has actually been ok in office on the issues I care about but he got there in an unethical way. He's got to go.

  • Hmm…

    Nick,
Please continue your research before you pledge your loyalty to Wells. As a Ward 6 resident, I was questioning whether I would vote for Wells again for our Ward. The major successes of Ward 6 should be attributed to Councilmember Ambrose(as well as Mayors Williams & Fenty). It's actually pretty rude that he never mentions her but hey that's politics.

Wells seems like a longshot to me, but I can actually see him winning if it's just him versus Bowser. There are a lot of people out there who don't like either of them, but I get the impression these voters are more willing to forgive Wells for being a dorky white southern transplant on a three-speed than they are Bowser for being Adrian Fenty's Mini-Me.

  • IAmNotALiberalDemocrat

I will not be voting for Tommy Wells, Muriel Bowser, Jack Evans, and David Catania for Mayor of the District. They all need to be voted off the D.C. Council.

  • Wait, What?

Congratulations, SE Ken (IANALD). So funny to see all the hate (fear?) Tommy generates.

THE WELLS BANDWAGON IS ALL GASSED UP AND READY TO ROLL OUT THE GARAGE WITH NO ONE ON IT BUT THOSE DRUNKEN FOOLS THAT FREQUENT H ST NE, CAP HILL TRANSPLANTS AND BLACK FOLK IN CHARGE OF DC GOV'T HATERS!

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE RESULTS FROM THE PRIMARY FOR THE DC MAYORAL RACE RESULTS 2014:
    1. GRAY
    2. BOWSER
    3. EVANS
    4. SILLYMON BROWN
    5. MARION BARRY

    ONE CITY!

  • saywhat14

Tommy really doesn't stand a chance in hell, he wants his ex Chief of staff to be his successor for his Ward 6 seat, which may happen, I think that Charles is a smart enough guy, but Tommy who refers to H Street as Starburst anything is way out of touch. Muriel will crush him in 2014.

  • FormerBrownSupporter

    Noodlez is on POINT!
Wells needs to go! Why don't all you "livable-walkable" myopic twits get behind Silverman for Wells seat?(he can't run for cm and mayor) I truly do think she will be more progressive then the conservative democrat Wells. Also he doesn't care for poor people. Jim Graham and Mary Cheh are a heros to me. Good 'ol fashioned progressives! I will do everything to help them win re election. McDuffie will easily win re election. Cheh if favored. Graham can still win ya'll (remember all you have to do is get the most votes) So yes Graham is also favored.(YAY!) With wells running for mayor and Silverman running to replace him. Aninta Bonds will easily win her seat again.
As for the Maryor's race... One city will Win again!! Wells, Bower, Gray 3-way and Gray will win. Bowser is an empty suit. Wells is aloof! Gray has a positive record to run on and remember he doens't have to get 50% just at least maybe 44% in a 3 way race and Gray wins! Catania doesn't have a prayer if he tried to run in the general election, this is a democratic town HELLO!! ONE CITY YALL!!

  • FormerBrownSupporter

The only coucilmembers that care about the most vulnerable in society are Berry(mayor for life), Alexander(best dressed council member), McDuffie(future mayor??), Bonds(long time activist), Graham(DC's Barnie Frank), Orange(used to be a sell out now political winds have shifted and was elected by poor blacks), Mendelson(white but progressive), and Cheh(white but extreamly progressive almost a communist and thus my kinda lady)

    The rest...
Grusso(FAKE progressive, really just a whore for the health care companies), Catania(doesn't care about people at all and nasty in person), Bowser(DC's Condoleezza Rice), Wells(I actually respect him we just disagree on policy from time to time. Wells(worst. Councilmember. Ever.)

  • Wait, What?

@FBS - funny, you can't have FormerBrownSupporter without BS...

I think you've got one councilmember missing from your list (evans...) and it's grosso, btw. Glad to hear that you think Alexander is the best dressed - she'll have that endorsement on her campaign flyer along with her 0 legislative accomplishments.

That Myopic Little Twit thing is so 2010, but then again, it's all the onecitidiots have to lean on - unless you can lean on arrests/ convictions (two down, one to go). How about you follow Courtland into Ward 9?
