Parkmobile Waves the White Flag on Fees

When pay-by-phone street parking contractor Parkmobile accused Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin of promoting legislation that increased its fees last, it inadvertently created Washington's least likely feud. But now, Parkmobile's giving up.

"In an attempt to explain why costs have increased the company left the potentially confusing impression that Federal legislation is to blame," Parkmobile executive vice president Laurens Eckelboom wrote in an email to customers this afternoon. "The company apologizes for any confusion caused by this statement."

Earlier in the email, Eckelboom calls the company's early claims "overly simplistic." Score one for Durbin. But will he get his wish for Mayor Vince Gray to say he was right, too?

Last week in a press release and email announcement introducing the Parkmobile Wallet, a simpler, lower cost way to pay for parking in the District of Columbia, the company made an overly simplistic statement about the underlying cause of increasing card transaction fees. In an attempt to explain why costs have increased the company left the potentially confusing impression that Federal legislation is to blame. The company apologizes for any confusion caused by this statement.
