The Needle: Rerouted Edition

Rain On The Parade: Georgia Avenue NW runs pretty far north into Maryland, but not quite all the way to Baltimore. Which is where the D.C. Caribbean Carnival, which in most years has rocked down the avenue in late June, is heading this year. Organizers couldn't get together the $179,000 they owed the city, city officials declined to issue a permit, and when Baltimore came calling, they jumped. Prince of Petworth commenters are likely to be pleased, but for the rest of us, the event will be missed. -3

God Save The Prince: British royalty can't seem to stop traipsing through D.C. Last year, Prince Charles came to town; today, it was his son Harry's turn. The non-heir to the throne was being honored for his work on behalf of wounded veterans. No word on whether he planned to visit the Holocaust Museum while he's here—but considering he's apparently into Nazi stuff, it wouldn't be a surprise. +1

Welcome To Hell: If you're reading this on the way home from work, you may already know how bad commutes in the area are. But if not, news that four local commuting journeys ranked in the top 12 worst ones in the nation, according to federal stats, might be a surprise. The worst commute in the country is from Bristow, Va., to the District. We'd make a joke here, but the poor residents of Bristow seem to have suffered enough. -2

Natitude 2, Phillies 1: The Washington Nationals successfully took back their stadium from the Philadelphia Phillies and their roaming hordes this weekend, winning two out of three games against the defending NL East champs. The news wasn't all good; star outfielder Jayson Werth broke his wrist and will be out until August, a blow for a club that's done better with defense than offense. But rookie phenom Bryce Harper stole home plate after being intentionally hit by a pitch from the Phillies' Cole Hamels—who was suspended five games for it. When Philly visits again in early August, things could get even more intense. +2
