Farewell Social Studies
LivingSocial is shuttering its D.C. blog Social Studies:
For the past year, we’ve had the pleasure of adding surprise and delight to your calendar by showcasing the sights, sounds, and stories of the those who bring DC’s DNA to life. While the few of us behind this here blog are off to pursue other opportunities at LivingSocial, we wanted to express our deep appreciation to our readers and to the many talented folks who have passed along ideas, offered their time and energy by contributing a post, or let us into their homes and businesses during the past 12 months.
They made an early splash with a heavily west-of-the-river-influenced stereotype map of D.C., and followed up with "Shit D.C. Says." But the blog was always a side project for the people in charge. And besides, now they have bigger things to worry about—like getting a tax break bill through the D.C. Council, or figuring out whether their business model will actually work.
Does this mean an end to couponing as journalism? Probably not—Scoutmob is still publishing original features. Besides, why shouldn't daily deal sites blog? After all, Washington City Paper now sells coupons.
