29 Percent of D.C. Workers Are Government Employees
A new Gallup poll finds that, surprise surprise, D.C. still has the most federal government employees, even with fewer jobs to go around:
Washington, D.C., easily leads in the nation in federal government employment, but the 21.4% of workers who are in federal government jobs is down 4.1 points in 2011 compared with 2010. The neighbors of the nation's capital, Maryland and Virginia, are second and third.
Gallup also finds that even though "big government" is the scary phrase of the current election cycle, 16.3 percent of U.S. workers work for the government—and no state has less than ten percent of its workforce employed by government.
