City Desk Commenting Note

Hello readers! You may have noticed that your comments on City Desk blog posts have been held for moderation when you've never had a problem posting them before. This is temporary for most of you—we're just tweaking the system, and after your first approved post, you should have all commenting rights and privileges.

That is, unless you make it a habit to engage in any of the following:

  1. Racism (this includes accusing other people of being racist without any intent to have a real conversation about racism—which, yes, is real.)
  2. Sexism
  3. E-thuggery
  4. Useless complaints (Don't have anything to say besides "City Paper sucks" or "you're/this post/this commenter is stupid"? Go share your insights with the Post or something.)
  5. Intangibly assholish behavior. A nebulous category, to be sure, but as your host here at City Desk, I'm not going to tolerate people smacking each other (or me) all the time. Any comment intended to stifle conversation or rile someone up is a waste of everyone's time and will be moderated.

With that said, I'm excited to see more discussion happening here and I've no intention of preventing people from airing their complaints or having conversations. Just be cool, and we'll be cool.

There goes freedom of speech. The City Desk will probably get less comments. I don't care if people call me a racist or a racist name. I would rather now how others feel about me in their hearts and minds oppose to smiling in my face like many of the new arrivals in the District.

@Southeast Ken: I want to make a joke about this is a blogocracy, not a democracy, but please know that I'm taking your comment seriously. I think debating and sprited discussion (including about race) is excellent---I just don't want the loudest people bludgeoning each other while onlookers decide not to comment.

Shani, I agree and respect your opinion. However, one of the things I love about the Washington City Paper, they do let people say what's on their minds. LOL

I will be very mindful of my comments. Sometimes we can get on each others nerves. I am not talking about you, Shani. LOL I am talking about those that post on here regularly, like myself.

E-thuggery covers a lot of megabytes. Can you be more specific?

@Mike Licht -- personal threats/ad hominem attacks are a good place to start.

    MY MOTTO!!!!

DOES THIS POLICY APPLY ONLY TO CITY DESK OR IS IT WASHCITYPAPER COMMENTING SECTION WIDE?

    1. RACISM- YOUR EXPLAINATION PROVIDES TOO MUCH OF A GRAY AREA ABOUT A BLACK AND WHITE SUBJECT THAT SHOULD BE TALKED ABOUT MORE.
    2. SEXISM-EVERY SINCE MS MANDY TOOK HER TALENTS TO THAT MYOPIC LITTLE ILL-CONTRIVED TWITTY "TBD" I REALLY HAVENT NOTICE ANY SEXIST COMMENTS AS MOST COMMENTERS ARE GENDER NEUTRAL WITH THEIR POSTS.
    3. E-THUGGERY-WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT AND WHERE THEY DO THAT AT?
    4. USELESS COMPLAINTS-I SEE THE RICK MANGUS RULE FINALLY TAKES EFFECT!
    5. INTANGIBLY ASSHOLE BEHAVIOR- UMMM THAT INCLUDES JUST ABOUT EVERYONES BEHAVIOR THAT COMMENTS ON THE WASHCITYPAPER SITE.

"Just be cool, and we'll be cool."-'COMMCONVOS' CAN GET HEATED AT TIMES AND PROVIDES IM MY VIEW A SORT OF VENTING PROCESS WHERE FOLKS MIGHT BE HOT ABOUT A SPECIFIC COMMENT/ISSUE/SUBJECT BUT ALLOWING THEM TO PLUCK OUT A FEW WORDS TO SPEAK THEIR MIND MIGHT SAVE SOMEONE IN THE REAL WORLD FROM CATCHING THAT HEAT. JUST A THOUGHT.

@noodlez, I hear you on that Sammy Davis, Jr. And right now, this is my City Desk policy, but we're playing it by ear, so we'll see how things work out and go from there. And it's okay if things get a little heated, there's just no need to make the comments a soul-sucking, unpleasant place to visit. By "be cool," I mean I just want people to watch themselves.

Heh, well most convos that violate all the above rules show up on LL posts anyway.

LOL @ Rick Mangus shout-out, guess he finally lost his internet access...
