Slideshow: The Solar Decathlon’s CHIP House Gets Pillowy
On Wednesday, Lydia DePillis posted a slideshow tour of various Solar Decathlon entrants on Housing Complex. But in anticipation of the event—a yearly competition of energy-efficient, solar-powered houses designed by collegiate teams—which officially kicks off today, here's a peek inside one in particular: the CHIP House, southern California's first Solar Decathlon entry.
That pillowy exterior insulates the solar-powered structure, which was designed by Southern California Institute of Architecture and the California Institute of Technology to reflect the state's increasing urban sprawl—a problem not exclusive to the Los Angeles area, to be sure.

The Solar Decathlon, which also sports entries from locals like the University of Maryland and D.C.'s chapter of Habitat for Humanity (in partnership with Parsons The New School for Design), runs to Oct. 2 in West Potomac Park.
