Redskins Circle Wagons Around “Redskins”

Great article by Paul Farhi in today's Washington Post about sports teams and even leagues trying to control the message. Farhi gives examples of the control-freakishness from across the country, but locals will be most enthralled, if not surprised, by Farhi's lengthy passages on Dan Snyder.

Turns out Snyder's team, apparently in the interest of maintaining control of all uses of the word "Redskins," has gotten the Post to stop calling its popular sports blog "Redskins Insider." It will now be called "Football Insider."

What makes the Redskins' aggression here—if we can use the name without paying for the privilege—so interesting to longtime Snyderophiles is his predilection for trading on the goodwill of others without permission. The team miffed the Kennedys at the beginning of last season when it renamed a section of FedExField the "RFK Standing Stomping Club" and sold standing room only tickets there for $152.50 plus "convenience" charges, all without ever asking for permission from either the Kennedy family or the folks who run RFK Stadium.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office database also contains info showing how much Snyder-owned businesses adore owning words. In 2007, Snyder's Six Flags tried to trademark "You Are Here." And, that year, Six Flags also applied for ownership of "Daycation."

Both efforts were abandoned, but still.

"You Are Here," Dan?

You gotta be kidding me.

Better yet: You Gotta Be Kidding Me.™

Christ sake are we back to this tired argument again!

First off, I would never have clicked the link to come here if I had known it was the "City Paper". Secondly, with the lawsuit Mr. Snyder is involved in with the "City Paper" it doesn't suprise me that you would write something/anything negative concerning Dan Snyder. Where's your creativity?

  • DC07

I guess the skins new PR man has had his hands full commenting on posts here and at the Washington Post. Well done Tony, or whatever shameless interns you have hired.

YOU DONT HAVE TO BE CREATIVE IF SOMEONE IS CREATING IT FOR YOU.

WHEN HAS THE CURRENT OWNER OF THE REDSKINS DONE ANYTHING/SOMETHING POSITIVE FOR THE COMMUNITY/CITY OF WASHINGTON DC? ALL HE DO IS CAUSE US GRIEF BY FIELDING SORRY ASS TEAMS AND PUTTING SORRY ASS FOLKS IN CHARGE!!!

    RUSS GRIMM FOR COACH.

Thing is, this isn't exactly something unique to Snyder. Facebook tried to trademark the word "face" (can't remember if they were able to or not). Apple tried to trademark the letter "i". And don't forget McDonald's! They've had countless "Mc" lawsuits.

    Dear Dan Snyder,

This is a cease and desist order from America's tribal nations for the use of the term "Redskin". We reserve the use of the slur to prevent it's use by white men for profit.

    Sincerely,

North America's Tribal Nations and Communities

Allskins is absolutely right to relate this story to Snyder's SLAPP suit against the City Paper, but the connection is rather different from what Allskins imagines.

What this incident shows is the decline of the Washington Post relative to the City Paper. When the Redskins sent their demand letter to the City Paper's owner over the Cranky Fans Guide, both it and the City Paper told the David Donovan where he could stick his threats. But when Snyder came to the Washington Post with an outrageous and completely baseless trademark demand, the Post just meekly went along.

FWIW, here are my comments on the libel suit:

  • Also Native American

"Redskins" was chosen to honor the team's coach, William "Lone Star" Dietz.

I, as a Native American, take no offense to the name. In fact, most all of my Native American friends don't mind the name either. I take more offense to the name Dan Snyder.

WaPo should start using the term 'R-Word'. That way they can comply with Snyder's demands AND stop using language that some find offensive.

You know danny-boy don't read above 'coz it's critical of him. Write him personally and let him know how petty he really is. His address is:

    11900 River Road
    Potomac, MD 20854

Maybe if he gets enough mail he'll move to another city (some hope)!

  • Darth

I hope he never goes to Paris; there's a popular French fashion label named "Redskins". He would absolutely shit himself over the potential for litigation.
