Ron Moten Is Still Out There

Back in October, Ron Moten seemed to be sounding a warning: Après Moten, Le Déluge. After Moten, the flood.

That was when, after years of getting ample funding from the administrations of Mayor Anthony Williams and Mayor Adrian Fenty, it was apparent money would be drying up for Peaceoholics, the anti-gang group he founded, in a Vince Gray administration.

The Washington Post spoke to Moten about a tragic Columbia Heights shooting on Saturday. There were three victims. One of them, Lucki Nancy Pannell, an 18-year-old student at Cardozo High School, later died of her wounds. Moten had worked with Pannell, and told the Post she was a good kid who might have hung out with the wrong people. Moten also seemed to not so subtly suggest a thriving Peaceoholics organization might have helped avoid the bloodshed.

"Moten said he was concerned that a Peaceoholics program that had worked with the three victims is no longer active," wrote the Post."'As soon as the weather breaks and you start having warm days, people come out of the woodwork, and people who have beefs with people, they tend to start heating back up,' he said"

When City Desk contacted Moten via phone, he was more explicit: "There's a few homicides that have happened that they [Peaceoholics] could have prevented."

As one of many D.C. journalists who looked very closely at Moten's organization, I've had a few animated discussions with him about the Peaceoholics. Each time, I've brought up the fact that I admire the dedication he and his colleagues have shown. But there seems to be little data on what happened to the money the group previously received, or on how effective their programs were.

Moten says the data is there: "They never want to print it."

Moten seems to be convinced the flood he predicted will crest when the streets are hottest. "I think after this summer people will appreciate our work more," he says. I suggest to Moten that if that crisis hits, it'd be helpful to have the data he says no one would print, so we can look back on it and figure out what the Peaceoholics did right. He claims to be willing: "We got it somewhere."

Whether Moten has the data or not, he does make one salient point over and over: Someone needs to be out there, talking to the youth who are beefing. He says not many others know what goes on in D.C.'s streets, and that the proof of this lies in the fact that after a homicide, reporters still call him for information.

    Another crook!

  • Heat

Police in this town need to be readily available to housing projects and known drug and gang hotspots to squash this violence. Moten is a piece of crap for not 'squashing the beef' anyway. So he lets his friends die if he's not getting paid? This is garbage.

MR SMITH YOU EVER HEARD OF THE PHRASE "BEATING A DEAD HORSE"? RON MOTEN AND THE PEACEAHOLICS ARE THE DEAD HORSE.

AS FOR BAMMA ASS YOU THINK MAYBE HE CAN EXPAND HIS NARRATIVE. HE CANT CAUSE HE'S A DUMB ASS AS WELL. OF COURSE CRIME RATES INCREASE WHEN THE WEATHER GETS WARM. HELLO.

THE PEACEAHOLICS HAVENT DONE A GOT DAMN THING BUT TOOK MONEY THEY WASNT SUPPOSED TO HAVE. LET ALONE PREVENTED CRIMES.

THE CLOWN IS A DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS CANDIDATE.
HE DOESNT HAVE BRAIN CONTROL SO HE ALLOWS ISSUES THAT HE THINK IS RELEVANT CONTROL HIS MIND.

Regardless of what you feel about Ron Moten's criminal background or Adrian Fenty's administration you cannot ignore the fact that him and the Peaceaholics care about the youth of this city. You can talk about him being a crook or making money off the Fenty administration, but the fact is he is one of the FEW who at least attempt to put an end to this vicious cycle of self destruction our youth have been engaged in in our communities. I know first hand how he has given young black men jobs and opportunities that many others never would. I salute Ron Moten, regardless of the fact that he has a criminal record, because he has at least attempted to tackle the problems that are plaguing OUR COMMUNITY. Fuck politics...Fuck Fenty...Fuck Gray Fuck Kwame Brown...Fuck all the suits that talk a good talk but dont ever engage in real change within our community....Ron Moten is a man of the people, a real person with obvious flaws yes...But at least he stands up for the people who have NO REAL VOICE

ron moten is a contract hustler, with very, very little to show for it.
He got his bankroll off Fenty.Go away and huscle yourself
in something that you can honestly show for it.

  • LOL

I missed Mr. Moten. He always makes me smile with his quotes. He also reminds me of how strange some things got under fenty.

I would have hoped that his organization saved enough off the previous administration's contracts to have established some kind of trust or reserve fund to help with this stuff. Or they could do like Rhee and really court some private donors.

But I guess it will be better for him to stand around screaming while more kids perish. Maybe that ANC lady in ward 8 was right.

Where is Bridgett and Theopolis? The two single-handedly prowled the streets at night talking with the youth of this city before there was a Ron Moton. They squashed many a beef among the young people and the youth did confide in them. I guess our great city leaders thought Ron,like Rhee had the right plan of action - NOT!

Bridgett and Theo were no strangers to DCPS either. They were a tremendous asset to school officials. If anything was about to start, all one had to do was call on them. They came in and rounded up all the parties involved and everyone ended the day on a good note.

They published a book that listed every crew that was known to this city listed. Does anyone remember them or the name of the book? It was a small paperback.

MOTEN IS A THUG AND WILL ALWAYS BE ONE

  • Disgusted in Ward 5

Moten is a hustler, pure and simple. Legitimate nonprofits can produce evidence of their results and spending on demand. The fact that he used the tragic death of Lucki Nancy Pannell to shill for Peaceaholics is disgusting. Both the Post and Citypaper should be ashamed for playing along.

The only "proof" that "lies in the fact that after a homicide, reporters still call him for information," is that local reporters are too scared and/or lazy to learn more about youth violence themselves and prefer, instead, to turn to convenient self-promoters who are always handy with a sound bite. Put in a little legwork or don't bother.

I rememember when Marion Barry had an organization called Pride incorporated that hired young black men that were ex-offenders. Mr. Moten has tired to do the same and to reduce the violence in the streets. He has made mistakes no one is perfect. I hope that he continues to work for the community. He has to do a better job of showing where his funds are going ,but I think his heart has slways been in the right place. We need community organizers. Let us not be negative in our dealings with Mr. Moten or others who try to make positive change in the community.

There are other organizations who are doing work with youth in the streets. I cannot understand why the news outlets do continue to ask Peaceholics about these things when other legitimate organizations are out there who can show they make a difference.

MOE CLEARLY PLAYED THE "WE THE ONLY ONES DOING THIS WORK" TOO LONG. HE BECAME WHAT HE ACCUSSED OTHERS OF BEING. HE HAS NO DATA. FENTY WOULD HAVE USED THE DATA DURING THE CAMPAIGN IF IT EXISTED. HIS GROUP BECAME A GOVERNMENT AGENCY, 70 EMPLOYEES. WHAT HAPPENDED TO THE PROGRAM DOLLARS THAT HE WAS FUNDED>>, PROGRAMS DIDN'T EXIST.
THE GROUP WAS WELL FUNDED WITH LITTLE TO NO RESULTS. LET MOE RIDE OFF INTO THE SUNSET WITH FENTY. REAL COMMUNITY WORKERS IS THE ORDER OF THE DAY. MOE HAS LOST ALL REAL STREET CREDIBILITY. UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP A LOT OF FOLK WERE HURT BY HIM USING HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH FENTY.
THESE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND I HAVE SIGNED MY NAME...I DON'T PLAY THROWING A ROCK AND THEN HIDE MY HAND.

I first would like to thank all of my supporters who look past stlye and perception. Those who hide behind keypads and backstab because of jealousy and envy just know I feel like Tupac, "I ain't made at ya" We would not get the work done without hater's, even King had those. Besides I understand that jealousy and his siter envy were the cause to the first homicide known to mankind. Rahim I dont know you but I whish you well and hope you can make a difference one day and then you wont half to backstab in the same old way! Peace. I have to go back to doing what I do best and it's not this ! It's helping people.
