Stand With Washington City Paper Against Dan Snyder's Lawsuit

Since news broke that Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder planned to file a lawsuit over Washington City Paper's "Cranky Redskins Fan's Guide to Dan Snyder," we've been overwhelmed by the support we've received. Comments on our site, comments on other sites, posts on Facebook, posts on Twitter, and man-on-the-street interviews on local (and national) TV news have been nearly unanimous in their message: "Don’t Sue."

Many of you have also asked how you can stand with us against Snyder's lawsuit. In many comments on our site, as well as many comments on Gene Weingarten's Washington Post column and chat, you've offered to donate to a legal defense fund. Redskins general counsel David Donovan made very clear, in a letter he sent to the investment group that owns our parent company last November, that this lawsuit would be expensive to fight. "Indeed, the cost of litigation would presumably quickly outstrip the asset value of the Washington City Paper," Donovan wrote.

We think the value of our paper will survive this lawsuit, and we intend to fight it vigorously. We have truth on our side and, as the last few days have made clear, we are grateful to have the public on our side as well.

Today, we're announcing the Washington City Paper Legal Defense Fund: Your chance to stand against Snyder's lawsuit, and with City Paper. This isn't really about the money. (Though the money definitely helps—this case will be expensive, even though we’re well-prepared to fight it.) Whatever we raise will be used to pay our legal costs, and whatever we don't spend fighting Snyder's lawsuit, we'll give to a local charity in the spirit of this fund. This is about showing Snyder you support our right—and anyone's right—to write the truth about him, or any powerful public figure, even if it's not flattering.

Please don't send us money you can't afford to spare; we know what the economy is like, and we value your moral support just as much as your financial support. City Paper is not a non-profit organization, which means contributions to our legal defense fund are not charitable donations and are not tax-exempt for federal, state, or D.C. income tax purposes.

To contribute, send a PayPal contribution to legaldefense@washingtoncitypaper.com, or send a check made out to "Washington City Paper Legal Defense Fund" to Washington City Paper, 2390 Champlain St. NW, Washington, DC 20009. You can also drop us a note at that address to show your support.

We can't thank you enough for standing with us now—as you've done for the last 30 years. So we'll just say, "Thanks." And please keep reading.

I'm sending a few dollars, wish I could send more. How about one of those red thermometers on a sidebar that shows how much money you are raising? Or Snyder's face turning red (like a devil) as more money pours in? Good luck!

  • Rick Mangus

WHAT A CROCK OF SHIT! THE CITY PAPER ASKED FOR THIS TO HAPPEN! IF YOU CAN'T RUN WITH THE BIG DOGS THEN STAY ON THE PORCH!

  • FriendofFOS

For starters, I'll be sending $500. I'll send more every time I see comments like Rick Mangina's.

Stick it to Snyder and his goons, WCP. Wah! Wah! Cancer, cancer, cancer. Wah! Wah! Laughingstock indeed.

  • Ben

@Rick Mangus--I don't think anyone would mistake Dan Snyder as a "big dog." Maybe a stanky poodle.

  • Jed S-A

A ridiculous lawsuit. I support the Washington City Paper and I am appalled by the groundless lawsuit. Moreover, claiming anti-semitism is absurd-you'd find similar defacement of pictures in any high school's textbook collection. It's the next step for those for whom drawing a silly mustache isn't quite enough.

  • Jed S-A

I get the old horns canard, I do, but c'mon. They drew a mustache, beard, and a UNIBROW. Out of the many anti-semitic things said about Jews throughout history, I don't recall one of them being accusing Jews of having unibrows. If it is, though, I'd be quite happy to claim Bert of Bert and Ernie as a member of the tribe and I look forward to Adam Sandler including him in an updated song next December.

  • Rick Mangus

    'FriendofFOS', you're an idiot!

  • Will

    Down with the Danny!!!

Somebody else (Drez) asked about t-shirts of the Demon Danny caricature. Definitely would like a few of those myself and would love to help sell them to raise funds.

    Definitely let me know.

  • Mike

All of these idiots bad mouthing Snyder (who is a major scumbag)are the same ones who give him their hard earned money year after year! STOP BUYING TICKETS AND MERCHANDISE! They are the highest grossing team in football. There is only one way to show him the door. STOP BUYING YOU IDIOTS!

  • Neil

Dave McKenna and the WCP staff must know that Snyder has NO sense of humor and that he would not be happy whatsoever with what was printed in that article. Are you surprised you're getting sued? You ran your story and you and the readers got your laughs, I hope it was worth it. May Snyder not bankrupt this awesome paper with the lawsuit, but you can't say you didn't see this as a possibility.

  • Ohhhh Danny

    I'll contribute!

I only WISH I could stop paying for my season tickets, but they told me NO when I asked, and hinted that I would be sued if I didn't keep paying (in MARCH!) for my tickets. Believe me, when my contract expires, there is NO WAY I would ever renew my contract. Besides, this is an aweful stadium experience - besides the team not playing 100% due to their hatred of this regime.

These are just horrible, horrible people - that's you Danny Snyder and Dave Donovan!

  • Andy G

This lawsuit is nothing more than a spoiled little boy having a hissyfit. I read the complaint and in my opinion (I practice law in Virginia) its legal junk. I hope that its promptly dismissed by the court. He could have filed the suit in the Circuit Court of Prince Georges County, or in DC, but filed in New York. Why would Snyder bring a lawsuit in New York? Because up there, the people don't know him as well.

    Dear City Paper:

You should be thankful that Satan hasn't yet sued you for defamation for making him look like Dan Snyder.

I'm looking forward to contributing to your Legal Defense Fund.

  • Swan_50

The t-shirt is an absolutely brilliant idea! Sell them on the corner of Falls and River Rd. in the Village. They would sell by the case and then everywhere he goes, the little man would get a reminder of just how little he is.

Even his balance sheet sould not support suing the half of DC that detests his rudderless, spineless leadership. I think it would be great if Shaun Suisham got a game winning field goal tomorrow - just to show the effect of a decent organization on individual performance......

  • Rich R.

I'm in. Free speech needs to be defended. I trust that everything you published was true. If it is, I'll keep sending money to defend your right to say it. Hey, Danny Boy, let's see if your big bucks and yappy poodle personality can hang in there when the people are aroused. Keep pushing with your suit, and push it until you realize that you've created a public referendum that reveals what people really think of you and your business practices. BTW, if the Skins were in the Super Bowl tomorrow, I'd still feel the same.

  • J-Lo

Down with all petty tyrants, from Cairo to Ashburn! Rise up, fans and demand a new regime. We will never be proud of this franchise as long as Snyder is in control. City Paper, keep the heat on!!

  • Rick Mangus

Free Speech does not mean stupid and reckless speech!

  • Dave

Pardon me for this lengthy note, but your supporters should be aware of what Snyder is really up to here. The November 24 letter to Atalaya Capital Management from Snyder's lawyer contains a revealing statement regarding their basic strategy here: "We presume that defending such litigation would not be a rational strategy for an investment fund such as yours. Indeed the cost of litigation would presumably quickly outstrip the asset value of the Wshington City Paper." In other words, Snyder and his lawyers know they can't win this case in the courts, because he has no case to win. Instead he is engaging in what is know as a "SLAPP suit." Wikipedia has a useful definition of this strategy as follows:

"A strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP) is a lawsuit that is intended to censor, intimidate and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense until they abandon their criticism or opposition...

The typical SLAPP plaintiff does not normally expect to win the lawsuit. The plaintiff's goals are accomplished if the defendant succumbs to fear, intimidation, mounting legal costs or simple exhaustion and abandons the criticism. A SLAPP may also intimidate others from participating in the debate. A SLAPP is often preceded by a legal threat. The difficulty, of course, is that plaintiffs do not present themselves to the Court admitting that their intent is to censor, intimidate or silence their critics..."

Hang in there Washington City Paper!

  • Jeff

Stop trolling, Rick. It's really obvious.

  • Danny Word

Here's a suggestion how Danny 'Napolean" Snyder can really make life difficult for The City Paper. Rather than suing the paper, implement the very same business plan he used for the Redskins - just buy the City Paper too and run into the ground, just as he has done with our beloved Redskins. I'm sure he can chase away as many fans of the paper as he has done with our beloved Redskins. Hey, maybe Danny could rehire Vinnie to be the City Paper's Editor-in-Chief. Time to get over it all Danny! We are so over you!

  • SJ

I'm in for the $10 I have left to my name and will add another $240 next week when I get paid. Fuck Dan Snyder.

  • Greg

While I can only imagine the personal pain Mr Snyder feels he and his wife have endured, all that has been accomplished is that his actions have further embarrassed himself, his family The Washington Redskins and the greater DC area.

I fully support someones right to defend himself when he feels he has been wronged but as a public figure he must unfortunately relinquish some of the privacy that the average citizen has. He is far from an average citizen and by over-reacting he only inflames and re-inforces negative perception of himself. Even if he were to be successful in this lawsuit there can be no positive outcome. Quite honestly his "donation" of any settlement to the "homeless" as it has been described seems like an attempt at a self-serving move. If he truly wants to assist with the homeless issue that help. Don't make it about the lawsuit. IF THERE is genuine concern and philanthropy than create a true foundation or donate to an existing cause with a proven record of succeess in the that area like Habitat for Humanity... otherwise it looks like the king is throwing crumbs to the peasants.

I've lived in the DC area now for 10 years, I'm not a "Washingtonian". I was not hear for the first Joe Gibbs run or the George Allen days, I am on the wait list for tickets and have the opportunity now to purchase. At this time I can't imagine spending my hard earned money with my limited entertainment budget on entertainment that is disappointing on the field and even more disappointing off the field. I know I am going in a different direction but why spend at a minimum of $200-$300 a game between tickets, parking, food, beverages, tailgating and souveniors on something that has no entertainment value. As someone who wants to see Redskins success how about focusing on Football operations, improving in the eye of the fans, not the PR dept the game day experience, from parking lots to being packed like sardines in the stadium.

The veiled threat of long and expensive drawn out lawsuit is embarrassing. The claim of anti-semitism is off, as well as the supposed attack on Mrs. Snyder to my eye does not exist. While the article is unflattering and may be factually incorrect in some areas ( I don't know) it seems that much of it is either based on truth or what your CUSTOMERS believe. The issue isn't the article its the fans perception or reality. No lawsuit is going to fix that.

Get off this thing that WCP is somehow wringing their hands, cowering in fear about a lawsuit and begging for help. Read their statement before you write. This a chance for once for long suffering Skins fans to go beyond complaining and actually put the money where the mouth is. And thousands of us with the donations in amounts we can afford can throw a big slap where it hurts the owner of the Redskins, right in the big fat false pride.
(Comments against WCP have to be coming from the bootlicks who told Danny Boy he could get away with this idiotic lawsuit.)

    To all Skins fans,
The power really is in your hands. All you have to do is stop going to the games. The NFL (aka Roger Goodell) HATES empty stadiums more than anything. This would force the NFL to put pressure on Snyder to sell the team. Of course, there is no guarantee that the next guy (or investment group) that comes in would be any better. We need a new model in NFL ownership. Fans are paying so much money, why shouldn't they have a seat at the negotiating table to interview owners? Too many bad owners like Danny are ruining the game, and laughing all the way to the bank as fans are extorted each Sunday. It is up to the fans to stop going to the games and enabling Snyder's reign of terror.

  • Snyder is a hermaphrodite

Rick Mangus is one of Snyder's shite eaters from Extremeskins. Fuck you Rick Mangus.

  • Rick Mangus

Do you kiss you're mother with that filthy mouth?

  • Jay M

Napolean, I mean, Danny is a BULLY!! He is immature and has no respect for the Burgundy and Gold Organization and fans that have supported and bled for the team for decades, like myself. He has NEVER EVER done anything for the fans that was a jesture of care and respect. Only has made decisions to make money! I love this country and our capitilistic ideals but loyalty and respect will last longer than stealing from your loyal patrons. I will always love the Redskins but he has ruined the organization!

  • Mike Madden

Actually, Rick Mangus has been around here hating on City Paper since well before this Dan Syder situation. He comes by it honestly...

  • Truth Hurts

I'm in. Snyder's done far more harm to himself by filing this dumb ass suit than anything CP could've written.

Note to CP: Don't spend legal defense fund contributions on tone deaf, unsavvy lawyers. And start printing/selling the Snyder tee-shirts drez and others have requested. Proceeds go to CP's defense.

  • Mike Madden

Our lawyer's pretty smart. Thanks for the support.

  • Snyder is a hermaphrodite

"Do you kiss you're mother with that filthy mouth?"

No Dick Mangus, just your wife and daughter.

  • Rick Mangus

I don't pay much attention to the Redskins and the NFL. I am rather opposed to the DC government giving money to billionaire bullies and will note that the voters rejected every candidate that supported the building of the baseball stadium the first chance they got. Sadly Jack Evans escaped the voters wrath: he wasn't on the ballot in that cycle.

So I don't think Snyder has helped himself in pursuing this lawsuit. The thing that surprises me most is that their lawyers would put in writing that Their goal was to make this an expensive litigation to force CPs parent company to retract the article and fire the author. That would indicate that they aren't the smartest knife in the deck, so to speak. Instead they are compounding the damage they have done to their reputation. Everyone knows this kind of this is true but it would seem there would be ethical reasons to to explicitly say it. It would also make me wonder if the Snyder camp will face a counter-suit if they lose in court.

I just finished reading the article, which I wouldn't have done without all of the publicity. I don't see what Snyder says is there, a smear on his wife's support of cancer programs. Did I miss something?

  • Herb Mul-Key

Just hoping the sheer number of donations - not necessarily the amount - will show $nyder how much we all despise him as well as his antics.
As for the caricature, as a kid I used to scribble mustches and scars and fangs, etc., on whatever face was featured on the cover of that week's WP tv guide. I wasn't being anti-semetic, just childish, like Lil' Danny.
