Brace yourselves: The cause and manner of Ali Ahmed Mohammed‘s death have been determined.

The DC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) says it’s finally ready to tell us what happened to Mohammed on Oct. 15, the night he threw a brick through the window of nightclub DC9, and was chased by five club employees: DC9 co-owner Bill Spieler, and employees Darryl Carter, Evan Preller, Arthur Zaloga and Reginald Phillips. The five men were arrested for murder, but prosecutors eventually dropped all charges.

The cause and manner of Mohammed’s death will be announced to the public either today or Monday, the OCME’s office says, as Mohammed’s family must be notified first.

The determination of Mohammed’s cause and manner of death may bring some  closure to an incident steeped in controversy. Supporters of the men once accused of killing Mohammed have said they aren’t capable of beating a man to death, as police originally asserted. But Mohammed’s network of family and supporters strongly believe otherwise, and have protested the decision to drop charges.

When the charges, after being downgraded to assault, were dismissed on Nov. 5, the U.S. Attorney’s office suggested it might file new charges after Mohammed’s autopsy report was in. “Our work is not done,” the office said in a statement. They added: “Our investigation will be informed by pending forensic analyses and the ruling of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on the cause and manner of death, important factors in any death inquiry.”

That means as DC9 finally opened its doors Friday, things will be coming to a head in some way. Five of its former employees may be on their way to either a new court date or complete exoneration as far as the ongoing investigation goes.
