Go-Go Band TCB Loses One More Venue

The same day that City Desk published MPD's hush-hush "go-go report," two of the genre's acts lost another D.C. venue.

District officials and nightclub owner Dean Smothers made clear Wednesday that certain go-go bands would never again be welcome at The Scene, in Northeast.

"I believe we've asked you to terminate your contractual relationship with TCB and Polo and the Boyz," Alcohol Beverage Control Board (ABC) member Nick Alberti said. Smothers replied that the bands were no longer working for him, and he wouldn't rehire them in the future.

That's the result of a July 2 stabbing of a person who attended one of TCB's shows at the Adams Place NE club. Though the patron was reportedly stabbed about an hour and a half after the gig—and several blocks away—that didn't seem to matter to city officials.

From now on, Smothers told the ABC board today, the club will have "No rappers. No go-go bands." On Thursdays, when the club used to book go-go, The Scene will feature neo-soul and R&B artists.

As D.C. officials force more and more clubs in the city to blacklist go-go, the gigs wind up in Prince George's County. County police Major Andy Ellis told City Desk today that MPD does share its go-go report with commanders and assitant commanders in his department. But Maryland cops don't necessarily monitor each event. "We'll look at the information and decide where we need to deploy officers," Ellis says.

UPDATE: Smothers called later to clarify what he was telling ABRA. The Scene will continue to book go-go acts—just not TCB or Polo and the Boyz, who used to play there Thursdays. But he may still feature go-go on other nights, with other bands.

Biggest mistake for the scene because the collected alot of revenue from there events.... They will lose alot of Money because of that..... A issue occur but where was the police when this happen... this happen several blocks from the event and also this is a event that has barely any violent activites till the other week...but I ask where was the police was at when this happen??? Dont let a couple of Occurances fear you from having a event...

I wish the best for there buisness but Its going to hit a all time LOW

Banning HIP HOP also is even worst for there buisness and throwing GOGO out the picture where its all the city listens to then you going to be all corupted to based of the people who make your buisness

  • Jay

Go Go attracts thugs. Black thugs shoot and stab each other. Good enough reason to ban it anywhere in the city.

  • Anwar “Anwezzy” Scott

DID YOU GO TO THE SHOW TO KNOW WHO GOES THERE... I WENT THERE... MY BAND USED TO OPEN THE SHOW THERE... DOES THAT MAKE ME A THUG???? ...

GOGO ATTRACTS PEOPLE WHO LOVE GOGO.... WHAT DO THUGS HAVE TO DO WITH THE MUSIC.... YOUR STATEMENT IS VERY STERITYPICAL(SPELL CHECK)

  • Anwar “Anwezzy” Scott

infACT .. if you put it as that... anything with live music and events may is going to a violent activity ... are they thugs??? riots broke out after a college football game.... are they thugs..... be correct of your terms young man

  • Dc Gogo

Anweezy, I feel what your TRYING to say but please read your message before you hit send. It only helps the go-go haters to put up post like that.

On another note, I find it funny that you all are letting the Mayor use you to help him in his election but what is he doing to support you? Yes he's paying you NOW but once he's elected, there won't be a place left in DC that you can preform in. How do you feel about that?

  • LaCaiRaine

Where is Mayor Fenty and Mr. Moten to defend these bands and keep them earning a living in DC...I will tell you, they are absent this argument because venue is in Ward 6 and whatever Tommy Wells and the constituency wants they will get and Fenty nor Moten will block that.

    Open your eyes

My 1st Go-Go was at 14 at Crossland HS going to see Essence. I have been to hundreds of Go-Go's since and now at 43, my take is:

I have never been to a Go-Go in all those years where some violence didn't jump off.

The reasons were varied; over a girl, stepped on shoe or bumping into someone, a look or stare, hood rivalries, etc.

Now those were the days when you MIGHT catch a heads up but MOSTLY those were crews jumpin...dudes getting stomped out with Hikers with the yellow or red strings, chukkas, SuperTims dig? I've seen every 'wolfpack' you can imagine...saw those Palmer Park bamas beat a dude on a slow moving car after a Go-Go when Fairmount Heights was holding classes at that old Jr. High School while the one up Addison Rd. was getting built, was with my cousins when they scrapped at Friendly Annex in the snow, saw numerous scraps down the Coliseum and Spingarn and Coolidge and the Eastside and left the Chapter 15 mins. before those fools lit it up and that girl got killed in the crossfire back in the day, saw the A-Team and the infamous Gangster Chronicles stomp cats out in more than one situation each, and a cat from our hood got killed down the Moonlight Inn back in the early 80's during a EU show and another cat smoked down old Wheel-a-While skating rink over a bump...a damn 'u bumped into me', over NOTHING as well as many others.

And Funk and Benny and Bear and Big Tony and Chuck, and all the Go-Go talkers, all to a man, stressed 'peace and love, don't push and shove' and how many times did Funk tell the crowd to behave like 'Ladies and Gentlemen'...too damn many to count. 'We' came down Metro Club (Respect to Breeze) and Panorama Room and the Howard and Cheriys and Black Hole and Anacostia Park and so many HS and other venues and acted like natural damn fools (remember the Go-Go pool party tapes where they were sexin RIGHT THERE ON FILM???), had people's mothers on the news looking angry and ashamed and embarrassed MAN...

Clubs have closed, Schools in both DC and MD had banned Go-Go's at one point so this is NOTHING NEW.

Now you can blame Go-Go or defend Go-Go, whatever cause it's not just Go-Go but youth culture period that has and has had this problem. But Go-Go music is being held hostage by the ACTIONS of the ignorant, angry, violent, deviant, hostile ass morons who come to the shows to act a fool. Usually a small number but BIG enough to fuck it up for EVERYBODY.

ALWAYS has been like that and ALWAYS will be like that.

  • Anwar “Anwezzy” Scott

I agree with Grumpy... I say this doe...there are going to be Nuggetshead that just dont learn no better but I feel as why should we as the rest of the gogo community suffer for there ignorant actions and why the police not in action to keep these ignorant people out gogos.... why not ban those people than ban the whole event and let others suffer??? they ban people from other places why not a gogo... Police are lazy...... they do not want to support our music... there are not here to support us..... if they where they we will have open arms for them to help us with prediciment.

  • Realist

    1. Have metal detectors at GoGo events, I know its sounds bad but it is what it is.

    2. Have police actively patrol the surrounding area

    3. STOP HAVING GOGOS IN SEEDY AREAS THAT ARE "IN THE CUT", but don't have them in a residential neighborhood either.

  • sedcdude

All these new bands.....that shit ain't go-go, only TRUE groups who embody THE GENRE are R.E., Chuck, Back, JY and Familiar Faces, the rest of that shit is GARBAGE!!

But I will say that this NOISE has provided an outlet for otherwise "at-risk" youth so I'm all for that, but Dean, damn, how could you fold like that my man???

You would think that all the bullshit you deal with from the REDNECKS on "da job" (anonymous reference) you would have more of a BACKBONE in the face of "da man"!!!!!

Where is Fenty's poverty pimpin' ass on this one?........I thought so!!!

  • sedcdude

    @ GRUMPY

wow, nostalgia is a motherfoyer.......you basically said it all and until the social ills are addressed it will be same shit, different day!

  • Anwar “Anwezzy” Scott

WE DONT SHOOT OR STAB EACHOTHER IN GOGOS SO WHY WOULD WE NEED METAL DETECTORS.... THE ONLY GOOD USE FOR THAT IS THAT WE DONT NEED SECIRITY TAKING ALL DAY CHECKING OUR POCKETS... WE HAD THEM AT THE BLACKHOLE BACK IN 2000-2005 BUT THAT REALLY DIDNT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE... OUR MUSIC IS NOT INTEND TO BASE EVERYONE AS CRIMINALS SO WHY WOULD WE TREAT THEM AS THAT???

BUT I AGREE WITH 2 AND A LITTLE BIT WITH THREE... THE ISSUE IS THAT POLICE DO NOT HELP US ONE BIT EVEN IF WE PAY THEM TO SUPPORT US... THEY ACTUALLY LET THE BAD SEEDS START DRAMA SO IT CAN LOOK BAD WITHIN THE WHOLE COMMUNITY TO HAVE MORE AMMO IN THERE FIGHT FOR THE STOP OF GOGO EVENTS.... IVE SEEN POLICE MAKE FALSE STATMENTS ON OUR EVENTS TO NOT TAKE ON THE DUTIES AS OFFICERS OF THE LAW
TO CONTRUBUTE IN THERE SECRET AND SHADY ORGANIZATION THEY HAVE FORMED TO END ALL EVENTS IN THE DISTRICT AND THE WHOLE STATE OF MARYLAND. IM ALL FOR PROTECTION OF OUR GUEST AT THE EVENTS AND IF POLICE MAKE IT SAFER FOR US THEN IM ALL FOR IT BUT IT IS TOTALLY UPSIDE DOWN.

HONESTLY SIR YOU ARE ONLY TLAKING FROM ONLY SEE ON THE NEWS AND STORIES THAT YOU HEAR FOR OTHERS BUT IM TALKING FROM REALITY AND ACTUALITY FROM EXPEREINCE OF THIS GOGO GAME AS A PROMOTER OF GOGO.

  • Anwar “Anwezzy” Scott

NOISE??? NO MISTER... ITS A CHANGE IN STYLE OF YEARS.. I WAS INSPIRED BY BAND SUCH AS CHUCK TROUBLEFUNK RE NEG BACKYARD 911 AND MORE AND AS MUCH AS THESE BANDS BUT YOU CANNOT JUDGE THE MUSIC BASED ON FROM THE CHANGE OF STYLE WITHIN THE YEARS AS "NOISE" IF YOU CANT UNDERSTAND IT

  • Grumpy

Look, as far as the 'styles', this is like saying Sinatra was better in my day than Tony Bennett...

I'm from that era of the Club LeBaron, the Maverick Room, the Room, Masonic Temple, Wilmer's, etc. That's the era of Chuck and RE and EU and Trouble and Mass Extinction and PumpBlenders and PeaceMakers and Redds and Hot Cold Sweat and Class and Chance and Ayre Rayde and those Shady Groove Bamas from VA and them lightskin dudes from UNITY Band and show and you name 'em...

If you from that era, then you can't listen to this 'Bangin and Cussin' that they playing now. It's like a cheap suit vs a tailored suit; they both a suit, but one don't fit as well as the other.

I don't like it, but if the younguns dig that style, then cool. But give me a PA '81 EU from the Club LeBaron (Sugar Bear's Birthday tape) or that '79 RE Express from the Maverick room or that '82-83 Little Benny Hubba Bubba from the Kaywood any damn day over it. 'Spotlight, Get on the Wagon, Bop Gun, Jun-gle Boo-GIE...' NOW THAT IS GO-GO!!

And unless we move to some Tom Cruise type technology where you can see who 'going' to commit a crime BEFORE it happens, ain't no way to keep certain folks out the venue as long as they got the entry fee and follow the dress code. I ain't against the music or younguns having a good time; but sadly my generation didn't teach them shit about solving conflicts cause we did the same shit and they just doing it more grimey than we did.

I don't have any answers for none of it. Can't point at one particular thing cause it ain't all projects or single parent kids or poor kids. I knew just as many hustlers from Ft. Washington as I did from Stanton Rd. Plenty of nice girls from round the way and plenty of shady broads from the suburbs. Ain't no real pattern, no real 'this is the sole reason why' type answer.

Don't know what to tell you...

  • Dc Gogo

OMG!!! Damn Grumpy you just took me back...

The Coliseum and the Eastside and Chapter, the Maverick Room, the Room, Masonic Temple....

Chuck and RE and EU and Trouble and Mass Extinction and PumpBlenders and PeaceMakers and Redds and Hot Cold Sweat and Class and Chance and Ayre Rayde and those Shady Groove Bamas from VA and them lightskin dudes from UNITY Band and show....

And Ayre Rayde and Mass Extinction.... I needed to say those two twice!!!!!

    Those was the day.... sigh....

@sedcdude--- I agree it sounds like NOISE to me too now but I guess that means YOU are getting old(ER) lol. Still, think back and tell me RE, EU and the rest of the above named bands didnt sound like NOISE to your parents, peeps or whoever the older generation was. If thats the music they like, they have a right to play it.

But even though people was getting stomped, they lived another day to decide if they REALLY wanted to get all out of order over a stepped on shoe or if they just wanted to get out the way when them ni$$as was walking by. lol, I know I moved and it didnt take a beat down for me to know.

You are right things happened back then and this generation has taken it ten step beyond what we did but now it's time for them to get involved in their own plight. Believing the police AS A WHOLE are against gogo and black kids is the same as them making the statement that all gogo is bad because of a few bad apples. Why are you expecting the police to do what you wont do? Which is change your mindset.

Maybe instead of making it a rule that you cuss them every time you walk past them to show them that you are "THAT NIGGA".... try showing them that you AREN'T that nigga by letting them get to know the you that YOU want them to see.

You cant fight every night over getting bumped into and then expect them to say these are a well mannered calm group of kids just having a good time. You cant come out the club, cuss the police, go to your car, drive around the corner and shoot at someone and then have the police say, oh noooo, we dont ever have and problems after the gogo let's out. Thats the wrong group of kids your looking at.....

    I'm just saying....

    CHANGE STARTS FROM WITHIN!!!
BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WANT TO SEE!!!!
If you want me to see you differently,
    show me something different!

  • Anwar “Anwezzy” Scott

    ^^^^ AGREE WIT BOTH STATEMENTS^^^^

  • sedcdude

    DCgogo

" Still, think back and tell me RE, EU and the rest of the above named bands didnt sound like NOISE to your parents, peeps or whoever the older generation was"

I don't have to think back because my Zune is filled up with RE, JY, Back, Familiar, 911, Suttle, Peacemakers, Class, Ayre Rayde, Mass Extinction, Maiesha and the hip(EU), Trouble, Pump Blenders, Redds N Boyz and Chuck and I'm here to tell you THAT WAS MUSIC, just like BYB today has matured into a BAND who plays GOOD ADULT MUSIC!! My pops used to think it was noise until he heard DC blow that horn!!

I had this argument before, UNTIL YOU HEAR or HEARD those bands live you wouldn'ta thunk it!!

Oh and let's not forget the "CAPITAL CENTRE after shows" at CHERIY'S where BIZ, DOUGIE FRESH, Slick Rick, SALT N' PEP, MUSICAL YOUTH, NEW EDITION and Fat Boys would party with GOGO and the artists who have and would party with RE, BYB, JY, Chuck...avant, raheem DEVAUGHN, Spike Lee, scarface, Jill Scott, Michelle N'degeocelo, and Maxwell just to name a few......STRAIGHT MUSICIANS!!!

  • EG

Grumpy and sedcdude are right. I am a on the young end and have had the pleasure to be acquainted with the sounds of the Rare Essence and the EU era- There is no comparison. What's happening now IS NOISE and tragic actions that go with it. It ain't that cool inside these days, it is hedonistic and dark. I've been to a Chuck concert and it was easy and cool. Everybody was lovin each other.

Yes Grumpy to say the generation before was hands off is an understatement. There are a lot of us walking around with a rage we don't understand. There is very little youth in the young these days. There might be a little fun but now joy.

  • EG

    no joy

OK....i agree with alot of points here, both for and against. Im a 20 yr old black male and i must say i dislike the cursing and disrespect to females that go on in gogo music. I minister in a GOSPEL GOGO BAND called Higher Heights Band. I must say that this is the type of atmosphere to be in where you can still listen to your "noise".lol The 3G Movement as a whole is out to change live and building closer realtionships with God as young ppl. Big turnouts and still no type of fights or anything like that. My opinion is, it is the music that you listen to. There are hoods and "gangs" and wanna be thugs that listen to secular music and want to portray a bad boy image all mixed in together and us as youth do not know how to act. I hear all the time from my father and grandfather that differences were settled with fist fights back in the day..now its all about stabbing and shooting. Most of these young ppl grow up in bad areas and think that being hard is the way to live.
