Bryan Weaver Snags Latino Caucus Endorsement

Maybe the race for D.C. Council's Ward One seat will actually be a real race. Last night, Bryan Weaver received the D.C. Latino Caucus endorsement over incumbent Councilmember Jim Graham and challenger Jeff Smith. Weaver notes in his press release on the big win:

"Last night at its endorsement meeting, the D.C. Latino Caucus overwhelmingly voted to endorse the candidacy of Bryan Weaver for Ward One Councilmember.

'I am deeply honored to receive this important endorsement from a community that is not only becoming one of the most important and influential voting blocs in the District of Columbia and nationally, but is also near and dear to my heart.  Being married to a Colombian-born wife and raising two Latino children in a Spanish-speaking household, the issues I have fought for as a community advocate and an 8-year Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, and will continue to fight for on the DC Council on behalf of the Latino community, are deeply personal to me and my family.

"From economic empowerment, good-paying jobs, quality education, affordable housing, small business development, smart crime prevention, and importantly, comprehensive immigration reform and fighting against a disturbing but growing nationwide trend of anti-immigrant local laws and ordinances, I will be a tireless advocate for Latinos in Ward One and the District of Columbia. In fact I was the first elected official in the District to strongly speak out, publicly condemning the Secure Communities initiative and urging Chief of Police Lanier to refuse the District of Columbia's participation in this deeply flawed initiative.

I also vow to bring much needed accountability, transparency and oversight to the Council of the District of Columbia.  There has been a disturbing lack of all three with the current leadership and that hurts Latinos and indeed all residents of Ward One.  I will be the voice for those who have none and will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, and I will be beholden to all residents of Ward One, and not the special interests.'"

Weaver is going to need a lot more endorsements to overcome Graham's name recognition, hefty war chest, and deep ties in the ward. But this win may mean that at least some community leaders are dissatisfied with Graham's tenure—particularly in the wake of the Ted Loza mess.

It's obvious, Bryan Weaver supports illegal immigration and D.C. continuing to be a sanctuary city to illegal aliens.

Bryan Weaver stated, he will represent the Latino population instead of saying he will represent all Ward 1 voters regardless of race, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. He sounds like a racist to me. I am glad I don't live in Ward 1 because I would have to tell this illegal loving jerk to go to hell.

To Jason, I've seen my middle class black Ward 4 neighborhood turn in to a Salvadoran barrio with lower class, racist, illiterate trash coming from El Salvador that live like animals. There are many other black Ward 4 residents that share my feelings. I speak fluent Spanish and I've been called niggers and black mother fuckers by Salvadorans. I was minding my business when I was called these names by these racist illiterat trash. Let them come live in your neighborhood, since you like diversity.

Quote From Another Washington Post article: Many quickly return to the United States. The agreement is "a new filter for this segment of the population," Martínez said.

Our immigration policy is a joke. Once Salvadorans are deported, how are they able to come right back over the border into the United States? My D.C. Northwest neighborhood is saturated with Salvadoran nationals and all the thousands of anchor babies born in the D.C. area.

SALVADORANS, please go home. You bring no skills or education with you to the United States. You are poor, illiterate, and you live like animals. Your customs are different than the way of life in the United States.

I look forward to my death.

We whites don't want illegals in our neighborhoods. At least the coloreds were born in the U.S. and are citizens. Liberal whites like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will be the downfall of the United States.

The State Department considers El Salvador a critical crime-threat country. El Salvador has one of the highest homicide rates in the world; violent crimes, as well as petty crimes are prevalent throughout El Salvador, and U.S. citizens have been among the victims. The Embassy is aware of at least seven American citizens who were murdered in El Salvador during the last year.

Extortion is on the rise and U.S. citizens and their family members have been victims in various incidents. Violent, organized gangs are a major factor in the crime situation and are often behind extortion attempts. Some areas of El Salvador are effectively controlled by gangs. Many gangs have access to military-style hardware, including automatic weapons and hand grenades.

Salvadorans and Mexicans are talk racial stero types of blacks before coming to the United States. These groups don't like black Americans or black Hispanics. I can't tell you the many times, I've been mistaken for a black American by Salvadorans/Central Americans in Washington, D.C. and called racist or ugly names in Spanish. I am a Dominican MPD police officer at 3D and I can tell you these Spanish speaking groups don't like Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, or Afro Cubans.

El Salvador is the only Central American country that has no visible African population because of its lack of an Atlantic coastline and subsequent access to the slave trade as occurred along the east coast of the continent. In addition, General Maximiliano Hernandez Martinez instituted race laws in 1930 that actually prohibited blacks from entering the country at all and it was not until the 1980s that this law was removed.

Jason Cherkis, do you support open borders and do you not think the U.S. should protect it's borders?

Reality check, President Bush didn't stop them from coming in, either. Where is that electronic fence he was supposed to have some company build? Did you forget that Bush and McCain were ALL IN FAVOR OF COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM? Every time anybody tries to curtail immigration the US Chamber of Commerce, as well as several other industries, howl that they can't find Americans to do the work and that those illegal aliens are needed. Jobs were shipped overseas because, allegedly, American's couldn't do the work. Yes, they think that we can't answer phones, work a help desk (which my Black, female self used to do thank you very much)or do computer coding and programming. For the jobs they couldn't move, they import H1B visa workers. It's all about the money people.

No, President Obama hasn't stopped them from coming, but neither did President GW Bush.

Politicians are pandering to Hispanics because of the large numbers. However, many Hispanics are illegal and many cannot vote or are not supposed to be voting in the United States if they are a non citizen. We know, liberal D.C. is allowing illegals to vote.

Hispanic or Latino is not a race, it's a culture. There are many black Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Panamanians, Cubans, Colombians, and Hondurans darker than me or other black U.S. citizens. Instead of them stating their race as being black, they will quickly state, they are Hispanic or Latino as if to say this term makes them better than black Americans. I am fluent in Spanish and I've witnessed racist comments made about blacks by Salvadorans/Central Americans and Mexicans in Spanish, not knowing I too speak Spanish. I find Hispanics/Latinos to be some of the most racist ethnic groups of people when it comes to skin color, hair texture, and having European features. I never used the term Spanish people as so many people use. The only time I use the term Spanish people is when I'm referring to people from Spain.

According to the U.S. Census, the majority of Hispanics in the United States identify their race as being white/Caucasian, not brown, colored, or Negro. There's no such thing as a brown race of people. The majority of blacks in the United States skin tone is brown not black. I don't know why so like to refer to Hispanics as brown. Go down to Miami and call those racist white Cubans brown. They will tell you quick, soy Blanco. All the Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, Colombians, Panamanians, Argentineans, Uruguayans, Paraguayans studying at Georgetown University are white as white Americans. I should know, I am a former employee of Georgetown University and I received my Graduate degree from there. Better yet, tune into all 3 Spanish speaking networks in the United States and you will see all white faces. If you see a black or Afro Latino on Spanish television in the novella's, they are slaves, maids, or servants. Last month the Spanish network Univision got into trouble for doing a skit with white Spanish speakers wearing big Afro wings with spears marking black Africans as jungle savages. Univision President and CEO Joe Uva have some explaining to do. On Friday, May 28, Univision aired an outrageous, racially demeaning skit on Despierta America. The show is billed as America's leading Spanish-language morning show.

My ancestors immigrated to the U.S. from Russia and Poland thru Ellis Island. They assimilated and learned to speak English. Many Hispanics coming to the U.S. are illegal and they refuse to learn English. Why should they, when our governments are pandering to them by printing or having recordings in Spanish. I am white, bisexual, and somewhat liberal. I must admit, illegal immigration is out of control in the United States. It's a mess!!!!!

What part of ILLEGAL do you not understand? What your point Jason Cherkis? Should we feel sorry for people who brazenly flaunt our laws and then suffer misfortune? Try working and not paying YOUR taxes and see what it gets you as legal citizens. Granted, until those of us who employ these folks illegally to save a few bucks are brought to task, not much will change. But please stop trying to tug at our heart strings with story after story on "illegal immigrants" sad plight in this country where they have chosen to live in, but not abide by, the laws that govern us.

    To: Jason Cherkis

I am a Registered Nurse at a Silver Spring, Maryland hospital, and I can tell you, most of the babies being born at this healthcare facility are to Hispanic illegal alien women. With the influx of illegal aliens pouring into the emergency rooms at hospitals in the D.C. area has caused a financially burden on many healthcare institutions. I am a black woman and a registered Democrat, but I don't support illegal immigration. The Democratic Party is spineless and they have pimped the black voters for over 40 years. Blacks are now the stepchildren within the Democratic Party. Democrats want the cheap votes of illegal aliens, mostly Hispanics. Republicans want the cheap labor. This is why President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid want to give citizenship to an estimate 20 million illegal aliens. If this happens, we will become a third world nation. We are almost there already.

To all of you posting comments about illegal immigration:

I am a resident of Ward 3, have degree, work, pay taxes and respect the law. And I am Salvadoran, surprise! It will be a very good idea if the haters of Salvadorans and Hispanics and the Latin American of African descend, did a bit of research. Salvadorans are here because of the economic support sent by the United States, support that helped to destroy entire cities and kill over 70,000 human beings. They started coming to the area in the 70s, mostly woman that worked cleaning houses in Potomac or babysitting kids for almost nothing per hour. They have been discriminated, abused, and mistreated by both white and African Americans. (Of course not everyone did, there have been good souls and conscientious individuals that have supported them.) But the majority have been abusive. Before the arrival of the "trash" Salvadorans, there was a very small Latino community with a few business, no Target, Bed,Bath and Beyond, CVS, Latino Restaurants (were you all like to go and eat good and cheap food,)Latino bars (like Havana Village,)etc. The community started to grow thanks to the economic power that the "illegal immigrants" brought.
We have an enormous Latin community whose children have been born and raised in the US, those babies the nurse graduated from Duke University "helps" are American Citizens and yes, they do Vote. We have been here for 40 years and a lot of us Vote and will continue to do so.
The recent immigrants, those that Mr. Vampire refers to are paying taxes, they buy, and buy and buy, and those taxes make the city's treasure grow. And for the Duke University graduate, let me mention a bit of information for you, the undocumented immigrants work and pay taxes BUT they don't claim tax RETURNS because they are afraid. Who do you think keeps Social Security and other services going? Is coming from the sweat of the Latin population. Check it out and you'll see.

Going back to the "illegals," do you know why there are so many of them working in farms? They were invited by farmers to come here and help them pick their crops and take care of fowl. Those nice chickens that you eat are being taken care of by underpay and mistreated illegals. Same with the cheap fruit we eat, if we were to paid for fruit and produce picked by a person earning minimum wage, we would paid 3 times as much. We wouldn't eat that much! Did you know that there are 4 year-old American children of Latino descent picking up strawberries and blueberries for you? So you can have them cheap?
Mr.Vampire, times have change, the Latino population is this country was around 48 million in the year 2,000. Let's wait and see how those numbers have changed for 2010, the Census Bureau will let us know soon. I am sure that if there were that many Russians in the country you would probably speak more Russian than English.
One more thing, Salvadorans love Caribbean food and music, but they don't like being mistreated and are deeply afraid of police brutality, they have been abused by so many cops, you wouldn't believe it!
We come here and forget, and believe we are better than the rest of the world, our memory goes out the door at that point and if all of you did a bit of research and research this site: http://www.ellisisland.org, you'll find the ship you came in and maybe the reason why. I came as part of a diplomatic family.

    Ward4NDC,
We can't negate that there is racism in Latin America as in any other place but our populations have mixed more than other countries. A Latino is a Latino, it doesn't matter what color you are. If we want to be fair, that happens among Black Americans, you also discriminate among yourselves,I have seen it. As far as the discriminatory remarks, we experience those everyday too. And it is a shame. Telemundo and Univision caters to different demographics, one is the Latino population in the US and the other is the Latinos living all over Central and South America, these populations come in all colors, shape and sizes. And yes, these media outlets are racist, any Latino will tell you that. We are aware, this companies have been bought by American investors and of course we have the White Cubans that run most of the programming. I don't like them either.
No more that I like the soap operas here.

Finally, you all, I LOVE JIM GRAHAM, not because he likes us but because thanks to him and others, we have rent-control in DC!

Is it racist to enforce the LAW?

  27. #27

Thank you Rick, I agree with you 100%. To WARD3: You are a part of the upper class who came from El Salvador legally. Back in El Salvador, you probably didn't associate with the lower class "savages" coming here. You are wrong, all Latino or Spanish speakers are not the same. Many of these groups come from different cultures, races, and sometimes the Spanish is different with some words having different meanings. Also, you state many of these anchor babies vote. Once again, you are wrong. Let's focus on the Salvadorans. The majority of Salvadorans don't vote, can't vote, have babies at an early age, and drop out of high school.

Both El Salvador and Mexico is importing their poverty into the United States. I can assure you, if these were millions of black and white U.S. citizens crossing the borders illegally going to Mexico and El Salvador, having babies, and demanding English as a second language, I can assure you, both the Salvadoran and Mexican governments would deport them all. The United States cannot absorb Central-South America, Dominican Republic, and Mexico's poorest illiterate citizens. If we continue to do so, we will be a third world country.

On the issue of Miss Jim Graham. He only think about himself and the welfare of illegals because he's sexually attractive to Salvadoran or Latino men for the pinga.

  28. #28

    To WARD3:

All Hispanics are not criminals or illegal aliens. Many are productive United States citizens. I feel that it is wrong for Latinos/Hispanics "NOT" to be against illegal immigration, cracking down on illegal aliens, and enforcing our immigration laws. If these were millions of blacks or whites coming from the Caribbean, Africa, or Europe, the majority of Hispanics would be for enforcing immigration laws. I am a black citizen with over 400 years of ancestry back to slavery in South Carolina. If these were millions of black Africans or black Caribbeans who broke U.S. laws by crossing our porous borders, I would want their behinds deported and U.S. immigration laws enforced. I am a citizen of the United States of America, not some foreign country on the continent of Africa or in the Caribbean.

  29. #29

Doubtful many illegals will be voting in that election.
What is important here is that those who are eligible to vote (not an easy prize to claim and not often sought by the criminal class)are being brought into the process. Fairly this time without Teddy Loza and Jim "Taxi Cash" "AIDS Grift" Graham gaming the system.

This immigration thing is just the latest tool of the oligarchs to get us all fighting amongst ourselves. Don't fall for it.

  30. #30

The sleezy democrats have a way to get Illegal voters into the polls and vote! The Presidental Election of 1960 for example if they check viable voters in Cook County Ill. who voted, in many cases they would have to use a 'Weegie Board' to contact those voters!

  31. #31

Mr. WARD4NDC, I believe it will do you good to check a bit of history and world economics, there are a lot of reasons why Latinos are in the United States. It seems that you don't know or don't want to know. I know you have 400 years of history and I am sure you've been discriminated just as you are doing with us now. There are millions of whites coming from Eastern Europe, but since their level of education is higher and they are white, nobody cares. And there are also millions of Africans living in this country. This city alone has a huge Ethiopian population, have you taken a cab lately? As a matter of fact, there is a law in DC, established in 2004, “the Language Access Law” that mandates Amharic, Vietnamese, Korean and Spanish interpretations and translations, be provided if you are a non-profit who receives money from DC or an entity of the DC Government. Wonderful law, which provides help to all those mentioned besides Spanish, don’t you think? Or are you and all the other anti-immigrant voices here are against Ethiopians, Koreans and Vietnamese too? Whether I am from the upper class or middle class doesn’t matter, how I treated people from any other origin whether African, Asian, African American, etc. You really have to do some research, the “Latino” Health Clinics in the city or Ward One help all origins, check out Mary’s Center for example. The problem of underserved communities has no color. There are poor Whites, Blacks, Latinos and other ethnicities all over this country that are hurting. I am sure you know what is happening and what has happened to the African Americans in this country, If you don’t, well, take some time and research what goes on. We live in “Resurrection City,” for your information. A wonderful city which we all have helped built and love. And no, the “undocumented” will not vote. How could they? The voters are the young Hispanic Americans that live here; they are all around you, why don’t you ask around in Ward Four? The Latino power in this city is Financial, we buy, pay taxes, and own many businesses that have contributed enormously to the economic growth in this town. As far as education and manners, you used the word “pinga” which is extremely vulgar and it is not used in Central America. That is part of the Caribbean lingo of Puerto Rico, Cuba and maybe the Dominican Republic, and I repeat, it is vulgar. You are one sided when it comes to our culture and it is a shame, behind every language there is a HUGE world to learn from. What you and all the others are doing here is blaming the immigrant population because of the economic crisis happening in the US, we didn’t tell the previous administration what to do, that is not our doing; don’t treat us as a scapegoat of your frustrations. Finally, and I will not respond to any more racial and ethnic attacks here, weren’t we discussing, the candidates from Ward One to the city council or are we discussing Salvadorans and the candidates sexual preferences?

  32. #32

This country was built by immigrants, and made strong by immigration. From the colonial period through the early 20th century, all one needed to be allowed in was a will to work. Sure, people complained that each wave of immigrants was "changing America", didn't speak English, and was imposing burdens on previous citizens with their children going to public schools. But those children grew up to be productive, tax-paying Americans, and helped build the world's largest economy. No immigrant was "illegal", because there were no limits on immigration.

Then, in the 1920s, the door began being pushed shut. Today, the same immigrants who would have been welcomed in the 19th century, are declared "illegal", because they don't qualify under the strict quota system.

Had today's immigration laws been in place in the 19th century, many of our own ancestors would have been kept out, or would have come in as "illegals".

The people coming here to work, and taking great risks in doing so, are people with ambition, drive, and a will to work. They'll help continue the building of America, and their children will be Americans. We should be welcoming them, just as our ancestors were welcomed, back when the immigration door was open.

  33. #33

I am sorry, the Salvadoran trash coming to the D.C. area and to the United States are trash, illiterate, belong to gangs, and had criminal records in El Salvador. The liberal D.C. Council prevented Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier from participating in the Secure Communities program. All Law Enforcement agencies in the D.C. area are participating in this problem. Any citizen or non-citizen names should be checked with the federal fingerprinting program if they have committed a crime in the District of Columbia. If the person or persons are found to be in the United States illegally, they should be turned over to ICE immediately. We now have a serious gang issues in the Nations Capital and in parts of Wards 1 & 4. Latin Kings, MS-13, Mara Salvatrucha, Street Thug Criminals (STC), Vatos Locos, and the Latin Kings are operating in the Washington metropolitan area.

Of all the many Hispanic ethnic groups, the Salvadorans are hated the most because they are know to start violence and to drink alcohol heavily. Most Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, Panamanians, Argentineans, Chileans, Paraguayans, Uruguayans, Venezuelans, Spaniards, and Colombians don't particular care for the Salvadorans.

WARD3, please explain to me, why the Salvadoran government forbid blacks to live there for years, until recently? I was born in Colon, Panama and I speak fluent Spanish and English. My race is black, but Salvadorans and Mexicans look at me strange when I speak in Spanish because they see a black person. I have been called monkeys and the N word right here in Washington, D.C. by these short racist Mestizo Salvadorans. What history do Salvadorans have in the United States and I don't recall Salvadorans walking hand in hand with blacks fighting in the 40's, 50's, and 60's for their civil rights as U.S. citizens? Black U.S. citizens ancestors were brought here against their will. Illegal aliens are coming here of their own free will. I am a immigrant and I immigrated to the U.S. legally. After being here for several years and I spoke English fluently before coming to the United States, I became a U.S. citizen.

I support legal immigration, not illegal immigration. Myself and others came here legally and went thru the process the right way to become U.S. citizens. Many of these illiterate Salvadorans and Mexicans will never learn English and their children will drop out of school at an eary age and have babies. Right now, many of these so called young Salvadorans don't vote, participate in their neighborhoods, or belong to any associations.

This is huge that he won! I do not live in Ward 1. And except for picking up a pizza I do not know the ward's politics very well. But Jim Graham has always seen himself as the go-to guy on the council for Latino affairs. I even think the pac was started by his former Chief of Staff Ted Loza. So for him to lose that his huge.

The thing is I know Jeff Smith through having a few meetings with him on education. I would not give him a ringing endorsement. And I believe DC can do better than a guy whose previous Chief of staff who he practically lived with his facing indictment. I was very impressed with Brian Weaver but during a debate until he verbally attacked Jim Graham. He lost me there.

Passion is a beautiful thing--but working on the council requires consensus building. And later one of his campaign workers attacked Jim Graham.

So Jim Graham is beatable just not by these two--Jeff and Brian will cancel each other out.
