D.C.’s Troubled Go-Go Scene Continues to Attract the Cops

A fierce Friday night in the District produced two shootings and six victims, two of which have died. The Washington Post reports:

"One victim was a 16-year-old District youth and the other was a 36-year-old Clinton man. The shootings occurred within an hour and 10 minutes, one in the 5900 block of Georgia Avenue in the Brightwood section of Northwest and the other miles away in the 800 block of Yuma Street in the Washington Highlands section of Southeast."

One of three victims shot in Brightwood, Jamaal Bell of First Street NW, was killed at around 11:30 p.m. Bell had just left a nearby go-go concert. The concert ended early due to fights.

"A group of young people, many of them described as teenagers, began walking away from the scene of the concert, heading south along Georgia Avenue. Just below Peabody Street, near Missouri Avenue NW, they encountered a larger group of about 50 people who had gathered there, police said. According to a preliminary investigation, shots were fired toward the smaller group. Bell was hit in the head. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said."

Cops were likely at the scene pretty quickly, as the concert had been included in MPD's somewhat enigmatic "go-go report". The internal report tracks scheduled go-go concerts, which cops the monitor in hopes of heading-off trouble between beefing gangs that decide to attend. Some District politicians and residents have long maintained that D.C.'s homegrown musical form attracts violence. No one seems to know what methods the cops use to keep abreast of the events. Chief Cathy Lanier tells City Desk via email that the Georgia Avenue corridor concert Bell was attending included three bands and had been discussed Friday morning in an "a.m. crime brief." There were five officers and a sergeant working the event, Lanier reports.

The Georgia Ave shooting was also right next to MPD 4D HQ, and Fenty Campaign HQ. Ahh the irony.

We will keep killing each other as long as guns are available so freely in our lives.

Ban all guns, and we cut the murder rate at least in half, probably more.

King Fenty loves being before a camera. In the past as the former Ward 4 Councilmember, King Fenty was at the scene of each shooting in Ward 4. This was a shooting of a D.C. high school student. This shooting occurred in the last block from the 4th District police station. One would think, a mayor would show up on the seen to show his or her concern, but King Fenty was to busy preparing for the marathon race today downtown.

Ward 4 is now a haven for "savages", native born and illegal aliens from El Salvador/Central America. I am moving across the park into Ward 3 where the resdients act civilized.

Did you miss the last 35 years of DC history? Guns were outlawed, and you saw the HIGHEST murder rates, in fact, were the murder capital of the world. Taking away the right for people to own guns does NOT work.

Now, guns are available to residents ( see DC v. Heller, June 2008) and the murder rate has, watch for it, dropped. That's right, the name of the article linked in this story is "Homicide totals in 2009 plummet in District, Prince George's"

Clearly the point is that guns don't kill people, go-go kills people.

    Correction:

If I have magical powers, I would send all the black U.S. born "savages" living in Ward 4 along with the thousands of illegal alien low class illiterate Salvadoran/Central American trash to the jungles of Brazil or Kenya.

Well of course if Maryland, Va and West Va have guns, it's practically pointless for DC not to have guns too.

What I said was a ban on guns. Not a District only ban on guns. Ban guns nationwide.

'Blue Pen', what planet are you from, DC had the strictest gun laws in the US and what was the murder rate in the late 1980's and in the 1990's! This utopian view of this matter that you have is straight out of a comic book, or a child's fairy tale, get REAL!

Chuck Brown and other go-go performers were playing elsewhere that night (go-go shows happen at multiple locations throughout the area most nights of the week) and there was no violence at those. As for the shows where there was violence afterwards; somewhere, some kids are learning that guns are an acceptable method to use in dealing with disagreements. That's so sad.

    Read Rick, read.
