Four Shot Dead—Where’s Fenty?

0331fenty

UPDATED 6:15 P.M.

Last night, the District experienced the deadliest act of neighborhood violence in at least 16 years. Thus far, there has been no word on a mayoral press conference.

That's out of character for Mayor Adrian M. Fenty. For instance, when a shooting last fall killed two and wounded three in the Clay Terrace neighborhood in Northeast, Fenty was on the scene soon afterward.

Over the weekend, Fenty and his wife Michelle traveled to Jamaica, where she addressed the Barbican Pines Optimists Club. It is unclear whether he's returned or not. This week is spring break for the D.C. Public Schools, which the mayor's sons attend, but Hizzoner is expected to unveil his FY2011 budget tomorrow.

A mayoral spokesperson declined to discuss the mayor's whereabouts this afternoon.

It's understandable that Fenty might not want to compete for media attention or answer questions about the candidacy of D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray, who announced a mayoral run yesterday. But this might be a moment where D.C. voters are looking for some answers from the top.

UPDATE, 6:15 P.M.: A press conference is scheduled for 9:15 this evening.

In this city with all the murders and shootings the Mayor can be expected to be at ALL of them. Here's an idea he can have Jim Graham, aka 'The Queen of All Media' be the Mayor's stand in, since Graham like to stand in front of the cameras so much!

  • Waiting for News

Not to quibble, but where's the City Paper been? More than four hours between posts? Is this what a post-Wemple world is like?

  • See what i’m taling about!

Then stop beating the shit out of him over bullshit. If he spoke that night. He would be grandstanding. If he waits a day, he is missing in action.

He is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't with people that are looking to critic every move he makes. He can't ride a bike. He can't get a fucking pool heated with out a cascade of complaints.

He guy is not perfect. Nobody is. But he is a damn hard worker and deserves more appreciation for the job he does. The seriousness of this tragedy. He seriousness of back to back blizzards. The seriousness of school reform is being lost because of the pettiness and vindictiveness of his opponents.

Now i ask you. If it was your child shot dead in the street. Your child forced into gang violence because of a school system that produces thousands of functional illeterates. What is more important? The Mayor's likability or his effectiveness. What is more important..a quick turn of a phrase and emotional pandering or an intense desire to improve?

Now, seeing as this multiple MURDER has happened. We are reminded why RESULTS MATTER. PERFORMANCE MATTERS. DECISIVENESS Matters.

WHAT IN VINCENT GRAY"S LIFE TELLS YOU THAT HE COULD HANDLE THIS SITUATION? Nothing and he is 70 years old. He ain't changing. And, what is you pretty boy millionaire going to do? What has he ever done to demonstrate that he can handle a mass tragedy?

I don't know what Fenty is going to do. However, you know he is going to do the hell out of it. He is not going to sit on his ass and consult with 500 people. I trust him to do someting quickly and decisively. And it won't be marching thru the street holding hands signing Kumbaya.

    Four Shot Dead—Where’s Fenty?

Hey, I'm no Fenty enthusiast, but I'm pretty sure he didn't do it.

  • Guido Sarducci

Did anyone else get as many laughs out of "See What I'm Talkin' About's" post as I did?

  • noodlez

YEAH THAT SHIT IS KIND OF COMICAL.

TYPICAL OF A WHINY FENTY SUPPORTER.

  • sedcdude

    @ SEEWHAT

    Very emotional, revealing and PATHETIC!!!!!!!!

"He is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't with people that are looking to critic every move he makes. He can't ride a bike. He can't get a fucking pool heated with out a cascade of complaints"

    THIS IS WHY HE'S CRITIQUED.....PRIORITIES!!!

"He guy is not perfect".....HE PRETENDS TO BE!!!

    "Nobody is".....EXACTLY, that's why he's critiqued!!!!

"But he is a damn hard worker and deserves more appreciation for the job he does".....YOUR OPINION!

"The seriousness of this tragedy".....EXACTLY, why wasn't he there??? At least that's the only time he comes to SE anyway!!!

"He seriousness of back to back blizzards. The seriousness of school reform".....HE KNEW WHAT IT WAS WHEN HE "CHOSE" TO RUN AND BECOME ELECTED!!!

"The seriousness of school reform is being lost because of the pettiness and vindictiveness of his opponents".....WTF?! SCHOOL REFORM, WHERE?

"Your child forced into gang violence because of a school system that produces thousands of functional illeterates. What is more important? The Mayor's likability or his effectiveness. What is more important..a quick turn of a phrase and emotional pandering or an intense desire to improve".......IF YOU HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF THIS, THEN YOU DAMN SURE AS HELL NEED TO BE BEATING THE "ABSOLUTE" SHIT OUT OF FENTY OVER THIS BULLSHIT BECAUSE THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAS BEEN AND IS HAPPENING ON "HIS" WATCH.....BUT CRIME IS DOWN AND TEST SCORES ARE UP......RIGHT!?

    -----------
Fenty is a FAILURE, PERIOD POINT BLANK, he has failed the youth, he has failed SE, SW and NE, ultimately the CITY!

His opponent's "RESPONSES" come with the territory and it would behoov you to grow THICKER SKIN if you are going to support him!!!!

THERE IS NO ROCK FOR HIM TO HIDE UNDER, WHAT A JOKE!

  • See what i’m taling about!

    Yeah,

Are you two idiots Barry crack babies or something. Those people are dead.

That shit is funny? Whiny? You f'kin idiots. You sound like a typical bum ass N****s. Somebody should do a drive bye on your bum ass. Black folk would be better off for it.

  • sedcdude

MORE emotional and ignorant dribble within your rant!

Guess what, that same strip of builings was also a building where a young man was duc taped, tortured and eventually jumped head 1st out of a 2nd floor window back in YOUR "Barry crack baby or something" days, but in fact, SHARON PRATT KELLY was mayor!!

LQQ'a here FOOL.....log off and go jump in the toilet, make sure to flush!!!

YOU ARE A BUM ASS N*GGER, no matter what ETHNICALLY challenged individual YOU are!

  • Bisexual Vampire

Maybe Fenty is on a downlow vacation with one of his boyfriends. This is unusal for Miss Fenty not to be in front of a camera during a crisis in the District of Columbia.

  • See what i’m taling about!

    secludedc,

Got under your skin? Truth hurt? And Yeah, I got emotional about multiple murders. You got me.

And Save the cheap debaters tricks. Stick with the subject. It is irrelevant that the murders killed in that particular place. It could have happened in a hundred different places in SE. The point is, that nobody is shocked at all that it happnend there. And "likability" ain't solving the problem.

So, no thanks on the Kelly diversion. Ask somebody that is stupid to walk with you down that path.

Ethnically Challenged? What is that supposed to mean? Are you calling me white? Or are you calling me a Tom? Either way, your full of s**t.

By the way, I am a bum as N*GGER. And proud of it.

You are a Stupid ass N*gga and clearly proud of that.

  • See what i’m taling about!

    Secludedc,

I noticed that you didn't argue with what I said. Just dismissed it as emotional. So, Answer the question:

What in Vincent Gray's background, personality, or mangement style says that he can handle an emergency situation? He is an administrator. He said censuring Barry was the hardest thing he ever had to do. A responbily experience high school senior could have handled that.

    Answer please?

What about Don Peebles shows you that he is ready to step up and handle a real tragedy? When has he ever had to deal with that pressure? He can't even make up his mind about running.

    Answer please?

    There isn't one.

Now, call me an emotional uncle tom again and go away.

  • Adrian Bent-Me

Fenty might be stupid, but he ain't stooopid. Why risk life and limb in SE for a demographic he cannot win. Besides, he's not even in DC. He had to stop off in Sousa, DR to check out the hot spots Jannarone and Skinner told him about...

  • Anita

I'm no Fenty supporter, but could it be that he is FINALLY showing some respect for the families' losses by not turning this tragedy into a photo op? Wait a minute...I bumped my head and forgot who we are talking about.

  • sedcdude

    @ SEE WHAT

YOU'RE NOT ONLY AN EMOTIONAL UNCLE TOM, BUT YOU'RE STUPID AS WELL!......I'm leaving, I've left and I'm gone!

  • hymesb

Woooo. Big bad SE. Scary! Boy, yall sure do hype up the hood. People get killed everywhere. What is there to be afraid of?

How would going to a press conference in SE with gang of police "risking life and limb"?

Dude has been in Ward 8 a million times. Ain't nothing about that Fenty that says scared. He grew up in DC during the Murder Capital years. Why is he going to get scared now.

Gray is the one that ain't about to walk thru there. One, he is too old. Two, he is scared to death of them young cats. That is why he has a 36 foot fence around his house.

  • proballdc

Fenty hasn't responded very well to tragedy in the city, other than show up and grand stand.

Case in point, the most horrible train crash in the history of the District.

In short, he choked, underreporting critical information, i.e. the number of casualties after being briefed by Metro and MPD on the actual numbers.

Fenty also responded terribly to the blizzard. Lets not forget he reported that the District public schools and government would be open even after the President of the United States shut down the federal government knowing that travel outside of neighborhoods, let alone, highways would be impossible. Where the snow on sidewalks was high enough to swallow any school age child. Here again was the Mayor, grandstanding instead of exercising effective leadership and using practical common sense.

One thing we do know about Vincent Gray, he is contemplative and is a master at sizes up a situation before committing the house and kitchen sink to it.

Some see Fenty's propensity to go off half-cocked as making tough decisions fast. I see it as no more than juvenile immaturity. That is the way kids behave on the playground.

Gray leaves alot to desire in terms of charisma, however, I respect his dedication to the District of Columbia. You cannot question his love of this city. His whole life has been dedicated to it.

I think that the Fenty supporters' turning Palin in their rhetoric against Gray is going to turn many voters off. Remember, it was negative personal attacks that lost Linda Cropp the election. And, as I recall, she led everyone in fundraising.

One thing is for certain. Gray has not stolen money, as an attorney, from an estate he was assigned to, only to return it when getting caught by the family and reported to the D.C. Bar; ultimately being sanctioned by that same bar. This is Fenty's legacy.

  • Five To Go

@proballdc, you are correct! Gray gets my vote!

  • tired

Mine too. According to WJLA Hizzoner is on his way back to DC from his vacation.

  • Bisexual Vampire

I heard, Fenty was in attendance at Ricky Martin's coming out party in Puerto Rico. LOL

  • 4th district home girl

Fenty fooled me once, but he will never fool me again and I will not be foolish enough to every vote for him again. Fenty has lost a great deal of voters that did support him his first time running. He has in fact lost the support of those voters. A number of those people are in the 30-55 age group. Too much power in some people's hands can make those individuals very dangerious. One should always remember...we voted you in and "we" can vote you OUT!

  • hymesb

    Huh?

    Nice try!

    1) When has Fenty gone negative of Gray? I can tell you when Gray went negative of Fenty. Everytime he gets a chance. And, nobody is going to convince you that Fenty is doing anything right. You guys are the "Anyone but Fenty" crowd.

2)"Fenty also responded terribly to the blizzard"

Don't you mean Blizzards? Like Three of them inside of a month. Are you joking? I grew up in Chicago. We never had that much snow dropped on us. Like 5 feet in a month. And, we blast Mayors for screwing it up. Fenty did a better job during those storms than I have ever seen done in Chicago.

    3) Metro Crash....Yep. He could have communcated better. But he didn't sit on his ass. I'll take an effort mistake. It is errors of ommission that I don't like.

    4) Stolen money? Calling him a thief doesn't make him one. Ok. You show me where anyone has ever found that he stole something. He slipped up clearly. He got the lightest sanction possible. If he had stolen, he would have been disbarred. Anyway, He admitted his error. He recitfied it.

And that is his Legacy? Not school reform. Not reducing crime. Not digging the city out of a lake full of snow. His legacy is based on a mistake he made when he wasn't even 30 years old. Ok. Obama was sniffing coke at harvard when he was 30 years old. Guess that is his legacy too.

    5) Kids on a playground. whatever. Get off the rhetoric. Fenty is a dead serious person. Children run around calling people names, agruing about irrelevant crap like baseball tickets, and procrastinating over things they don't want to do. Sounds like Gray to me.

    6) And you don't question Gray's dedication. He is life long service to dc. Ok. I'll give you that. Explain why Fenty doens't get the same credit. He is a life-long resident. And, he is clearly dedicated to the district. He is a two time councilman. He served as Mayor. He attended DC public school. He went to law school in DC. What's the difference. Oh, you don't like Fenty. So all of that just goes out of the window.

  • WARD4DC

Many young black males are lost, godless, and hopeless. They don't support law and order in a civilized society. These undesirables should be rounded up and sent off to the jungles of Africa or Brazil and fight with real animals. For the record, I am an educated black male who have been taught class and morals during the sixties growing up. It saddens me to see some young black males act like "savages". My wife and I raised 3 black males. All are college graduates and productive citizens in society.

I am not a Fenty supporter, but what could Adrian had done if he was in town? The only thing King Fenty could or would do, he would stand in front of a camera like he's a movie star.

  • nope.

Can't stick with you on that one:

"Remember, it was negative personal attacks that lost Linda Cropp the election. And, as I recall, she led everyone in fundraising."

When has Fenty launched a negative campaign add? And, you do realize that is what Gray is going to do. Right?

Anyway, you recall incorrectly. Fenty out raised Cropp by a good bit. He never trailed and set the all-time fundraising record. The record that he just beat last reporting cycle.

  • WARD4DC

    Correction:

I am not a Fenty supporter, but what could Adrian have done if he was in town? The only thing King Fenty could or would do, he would stand in front of a camera like he's a movie star.

    hymesb=FENTY'S PLANE SEAT

HEY hymesb THE ANYBODY BUT FENTY CROWD IS GROWING BY THE DAY. YOU WILL BE THE ONLY ONE LEFT IN HIS CORNER IN ABOUT A MONTH.

I HAVE FEW QUESTIONS SINCE YOU LIKE TO DEFEND YA BOY SO MUCH.

WHO IS IN CHARGE WHEN FAGGIE FENTY IS AWAY?
DID HE ISSUE A STATEMENT IN HIS ABSENCE?
WHY IS HE SO SECRET ABOUT TAKING TIME OFF?
HE IS THE MAYOR OF WASHINGTON, DC AND NOT ONE CITIZEN KNOW HE IS OUT OF TOWN. WHY IS THAT?

I RESPECT YOUR TEAM PLAYER ATTITUDE. YOU ARE DOWN WITH THE CLOWN UNTIL UNTIL THE NEWLY ELECTED MAYOR COMES AROUND.

  • proballdc

As a comprehension aid to those who have difficulty in reading, my comments regarding "going negative" specifically was directed at YOU. Candidate supporters. The reference to Palin is YOUR style (or lack thereof) and tea party like antics. Inasmuch as a candidate themselves can turn voters off, their supporters can be equally destructive to their chances at swaying voters. On both sides, I believe that the personal attacks on a persons age, gender, orientation, etc. are below the belt and voters in this city have proven historically that they don't react well to them.

Linda Cropp had millions but launched into negativity which sank her bid to become Mayor. The people just don't react very well to it.

It is ok to challenge someones integrity on the basis of facts, i.e. "accidentally depositing an old man's estate money that you were assigned to protect into your personal account, getting caught, then returning it when the family reports you to the D.C. bar" or illegally transferring 85 million in D.C. taxpayer dollars to a quasi-public agency for the sole purpose of doling it out in contracts, outside of legislative oversight, that "just happen" to land in the lap of friends and cronies in the form of contracts, of which they do not have the requisite professional credentials to fulfill the scope of work of which they require.

Yes, we had blizzard(s). And the Mayor failed miserably in responding to either of them. If the President of the United States, knowing the fiscal impact of shutting down the federal government, thought it prudent, based on the severity of the storm, then why could not the mayor buzzing around in a Smart car with a plow clearing his way, not see the same logic? Ego trumped sound judgment and he made a decision that placed citizens in harms way.

It is not the role of the Council Chair or any council person to act during crisis or emergencies. It is he executives job. How that executive reacts is a direct reflection on how they lead. Poor yet fast action is still poor action.

  • nope.

    WARD4DC,

"They don't support law and order in a civilized society. These undesirables should be rounded up and sent off to the jungles of Africa or Brazil and fight with real animals. For the record, I am an educated black male who have been taught class and morals during the sixties growing up. It saddens me to see some young black males act like "savages".

That is a repulsive statement. And what do the sixties have to do with it. Other than, that is, being the people that produced these "monkey's."

If the parents that raised the children of the sixties did such a great job....what happened to the next genertaion? Why did your generation fail these kids? You guys raised there parents?

Maybe your generation f*cked up? In fact, you know they did.

Anyway, that is why I like Fenty. Somebody has to try something new. These "animals" are our family.

  • proballdc

I have given up on these young people. I am not afraid of them, I am afraid of what I may do to them if they cross me. Ive seen their type before. They are cowards hiding behind a speeding car and a gun blazing out of it's window.

You cannot reason with the unreasonable. They have been coddled in the juvenile justice system in this city. Treated like misunderstood victims instead of the hardened criminals that they have grown up to be.

On thing this Supreme Court has done that I support is strike down the District's handgun law. Now law abiding citizens can prepare themselves in the chance they encounter one of their hoodlums.

It is time that the people, all people, call a hood a hood and treat them as such.

  • hymesb

    Probaldc,

Fool, I know what you said. It was so ridiculous that i just moved on to Fenty. I mean how can I take that bs serious. There are 20 attack posts against Fenty for everyone I throw out at Gray. But "I" am going negative. Please! Gray is just so easy to break down that I can't resist.

Sarah Palin. I have heard it all now. The "anyone but Fenty"/"fenty teabaggers" are calling me Sarah Palin. Amazing. That was like Barry calling Fenty "toxic." Just amazing.

You must be joking. My comments are going to turn people against Fenty? Yeah, Bisexual vampire was in the books for Fenty before i opened my big mouith. Whatever, you have a very high opinion of internet blogs. Unfortunately for Gray, and all of DC, many of his potential supporters can't read this note. They are functional illiterates. Or, completely illiterate. GO DCPS!!!

They do see TV adds though. And i ain't planning on filming one.

  • sedcdude

    @ hymesb,

actually YOU do a GREAT job of turning the negative light on FENTY, YOU!

BTW, this is DC, you wouldn't understand!

@ probabll, I'm with you up to #30, as a matter of fact the next mayor will have to CREATE a way to address this maturation of DESENSITIZED, DETACHED and neglected "crack babies", right along with the "returning citizens" mixing with "society"!

There's a whole notha' dynamic at work here that can't be rid with JUST righting it off or locking em' up, there will be collateral damage on both sides!

Can't continue to sweep shit under the rug or "attempt" to hide the shit, DON'T WORK!

    This shit is "cyclical"!

The way I see it, HISTORY is about to repeat itself!

Nope, my wife and I have raised our 3 sons. These animals are not my problem and they should have been aborted at birth. These "savages" terrorizing many black neighborhoods and others, I have no pity for their asses. Yes, I grew up in the sixties and my parents (both mother and father) knew my goings and comings at all times. The same goes for the young men and women I grew up with. Some end up in jail, killed, but the majority went on to college and became productive citizens. Shit, myself and other blacks are not responsible for these bad blood Demons roaming the streets of the District of Columbia. If I had my way, I would deport their asses along with illegal aliens to El Salvador or Mexico.

My biggest issue with all of this is the fear-mongering that goes on when a shooting happens in Southeast Washington DC. When a shooting happens on a college campus or at a workplace what does that make the shooter or the family of the shooter or the location where the shooting takes place? No one stops sending their children to college or school period. I will tell you it makes them HUMAN, and DISTURBED. Remember, hurt people, hurt people. There is illness in every aspect of violence no matter how small or massive. The taking of a life and mass injury of innocent victims is nothing to play political hay with.

Youth in Southeast are no different from youth in any part of this country who kill and believe me, there are lots of youth who kill and for the dumbest of reasons, so cut the crap and stop making it about Southeast and color.

    DID YOU READ THIS STORY?
“In Michigan, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal to be in a militia,” said Tom McDormett, a neighbor. He added: “They would practice shooting, but that’s not a big deal. People do that all the time out here.”

By Monday, the Stones were in green prison garb in a federal courthouse in Detroit, two of nine defendants facing sedition and weapons charges in connection with what Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. called an “insidious plan.”

In an indictment against the nine unsealed on Monday, the Justice Department said they were part of a group of apocalyptic Christian militants who were plotting to kill law enforcement officers in hopes of inciting an antigovernment uprising, the latest in a recent surge in right-wing militia activity.

  • proballdc

Sedcdude, I have seen and heard it all. I have chatted with these corner boys umpteen times about doing something productive with their time and their youth. All to no avail. They still huddle together in groups in front of liquor stores or even in front of their apartment buildings. I was never allowed to do that.

  • DC Hoodrat

Watching these trifling niggas on television is DISGUSTING! All black, mainly FAT, and all trifling. What were 30 year olds doing hanging out with 16 year olds?

They were all talking about how everyone was trying to get their life together (read: they are savages and weren't committing crimes at this point so why come dey got shot?)

Good riddance to ALL of them.

  • Barry town

I ain't a big Fenty Fan. And, I thought he could be beat. But, dude is nothing to sneeze at.

I saw Fenty coming down my cousins block in Ward 5. He was knocking on doors. He talked to a older lady that was drilling him about contracts, teacher firings, and something about him not being proud to be black.

Only aswer I could hear was "mame, I would rather not get reielected than let this problem continue. One term of improvement is better than two of the same old thing. But, we need to keep puching. And I need your support. Can I have you support. Will you take this yard-sign."

As he was talking, another woman drove by started cussing and threatening him. She even made the block twice. She said " we're coming back. You better not be here."

He said something like "Talk to me. Just come over and talk to me. I can't understand if you don't talk to me."

Dude could have been shot the way she was acting. And it was clear that she drove there because he was there.

Anyway, the older lady took a yard sign and gave him a hug. I think there were 6 houses on that block with his signs when he left.

I don't know how you out campaign that guy. And he sure didn't seem remote or dismissive. I can't see Gray doing it like that. He wants people to watch him on TV channel 13.

This dude was jogging up 30 steps to doors. and, he did it at least 10 times that block. And, not a drip of sweat. Not out of breath.

And, the young black guys that were with him were professional and effecient. It was like Fenty had them on a string.

Really, that shit was impressive. I have worked with several campaigns (they gave me fifty bucks a pop) in college. That is hard work.

Fenty's campaign folk are the sharpest I have ever seen by good bit.

  • Adrian Bent-Me

hymesb- sarcasm escapes you huh? Ok, I'll break it down for you. Fenty cannot win in Ward 8. Why risk anything (bad publicity, boos from the crowd, general resistance for most of the residents), to appease a crowd that already hates him. No matter what charm he tries to croon over on little old ladies, the rest of us are just tired of his bullshit.
