With Gray Threatening, Athletes Stand Up for Fenty

0330fenty

When word leaked yesterday that D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray would be running for mayor, political junkies salivated, union officials cheered, and local athletes sure noticed, too.

You see, under Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, it's been a halcyon era for folks who, like Hizzoner, who push themselves to the limit in marathons, triathlons, and competitive cycling. Fenty's opened new recreation facilities, attracted new top-level competitions, and is an accomplished athlete himself.

The 67-year-old Gray is an athlete, too, though he prefers different pursuits—baseball and hand dancing, to be precise.

Yesterday afternoon, Chuck Brodsky, founder of the Nation's Triathlon and a close ally of Fenty's, mass e-mailed his fellow competitors and issued a call to arms: "The benefits we've enjoyed under Mayor Fenty and our way of life as athletes, cyclists, runners, sports enthusiasts and competitors in the District of Columbia is in jeopardy," he wrote. "Don't stand idle. Now is your time to be heard."

The e-mail continues: "You've never allowed anyone to tell you how to live your life. That's the hallmark of our A type personalities. Now is your time to stand up, be heard, and support Mayor Fenty in his re-election bid to preserve the gains of our city and our quality of life."

"[Y]our support," Brodsky writes, "is non-negotiable." He requested athletes that help with daily door-knocking or post a yard sign to preserve a "more robust and athlete friendly city."

Brodsky, reached today, deems the response to the e-mail "overwhelming."

"My inbox is flooded with people who want to help," he says. "Not just themselves, but they want me to bring a dozen [signs] to give them to their neighbors."

Brodsky adds: "This is our time to stand up. We've never had it so good for athletes...so we want to keep it going."

The message in full:

Subject: It's your time to stand up and be heard!

Tomorrow Vince Gray will announce his candidacy for Mayor of DC. The benefits we've enjoyed under Mayor Fenty and our way of life as athletes, cyclists, runners, sports enthusiasts and competitors in the District of Columbia is in jeopardy. Don't stand idle. Now is your time to be heard.

You've never allowed anyone to tell you how to live your life. That's the hallmark of our A type personalities. Now is your time to stand up, be heard, and support Mayor Fenty in his re-election bid to preserve the gains of our city and our quality of life. your support is non-negotiable.

There are two ways you can help Mayor Fenty in his re-election bid:

1. Join us for daily door knocking from 3:30pm to 7pm. Pledge to join at least one day per week. This is where the battle is won for the hearts, minds, and votes of DC residents. It is the single most important element to the campaign and you need to be present. Look at your calendar right now and email me back the day(s) you can be there. We will arrange pickup and drop off if you need it.

2. Put a Fenty for Mayor sign in your yard or on your balcony. Visibility and awareness is a key element for victory. Put at least one sign in your yard then visit neighbors on both sides of your home and across the street and get them to put signs in their yard. Try to make your neighborhood Fentyville by placing signs in every neighbors yard! Right now email me back your address and we will have a sign delivered to you in the next day or two. DO NOT DELAY!

There are moments in time when we must all take action. This is that moment. We've all benefited from a more robust and athlete friendly city under Mayor Fenty. It is your responsibility to make sure that he has an opportunity to serve a second term and continue the great work he's achieved for us and the citizens of the District of Columbia.

If anyone you know is a voter in the District and wasn't included in this email, forward it on. This is a part of the responsibility we all share to ensure we drive as much support for our Mayor and friend as possible.

Thx.

    What a bunch of fools

  • proballdc

yeah...come knocking on my door with that "support Fenty" foolishness and see what happens.

  • noodlez

A BUNCH OF GREEN SIGNS IN YARDS OF FOLK WHO IS ALREADY GOING TO VOTE FOR HIS BITCH ASS IN WARDS 2 AND 3. BFD.

  • If it walks like a duck

Yeah, right, stand up for a frat-brother contract cheater, athlete who uses public funds for bike transportation and police escorts, etc. etc. because he cycles to keep his body in shape for down-low pursuits. Give me a break.

  • Ward 5

I'm with you proballdc - PLEASE knock on my door so I can tell you why i'm NOT putting a green sign in my yard.

And of all the things "athletes, cyclists, runners, sports enthusiasts" - this is the LEAST group i'm concerned about in DC!!! How about you get support from the Homeless, Jobless, and Uninsured - then i'll be more inclined to listen.

    Ugh

  • noodlez

INSTEAD OF ROBO-CALLS, YARD SIGNS AND DOOR KNOCKING HE SHOULD FIND OUT WHY POLL ON NEWSCHANNEL 8 IS 83% AGAINST HIM BEING REELECTED!

HEY FENTY TAKE YOUR HAT, YOUR COAT AND LEAVE.

  • D

Ward 5, I will be so happy when the phony "constituents" from the Fake DC, the hijackers who ruined this town for 20 years will all be gone back to Virginia and Maryland. G'Bye!

The DC of hardworking folks who not only got good grades in high school, they got good grades in college and got advanced degrees in Graduate School are the inheritors of our city.

the people who don't care about themselves? I learned to stop caring about them years ago.

  • WARD4NDC

How many of these fools live in D.C. and are registered D.C. voters? I say no more.

  • Former Staffer

Yeah, we've got to stick up for the mayor who breaks traffic laws like the rest of us cyclists. I mean, without hiz-lawbreak-er leading the charge, we might be forced to follow the rules.

  • Wendy Glenn

Who gives a damn about cyclist when kids don't have rec centers, parents don't have jobs, homeless are being exploited. Take you Virginia/Maryland non-DC resident behinds back to your own town.

Hizzoner has exploited this city for his benefit long enough. We have alwasy been a city of athletes and we did not need Mayor Fenty to make it so.

My vote will be for a Mayor who is ready to PUT THE RESIDENTS FIRST and I mean all of the residents, not just those with money and affluence.

  • ontarioroader

Where can I get "anyone but Fenty" lawn signs? I've seen them around. Maybe I'll just make my own "another bicyclist against Fenty" sign.

  • Ward 5

Really ontarioroader???? If you find out - please post the answer, I need one, or two, or three...

  • DCVoter

Too bad members of City Boards aren't covered by the Hatch Act (or are they?!). You're falling a bit down on the job there DeBonis...not only is he a strong ally and the founder of the National Marathon, but he is also the president of the ABC Board...

  • D

Wendy, Fenty is the only one putting all the residents first, not simply the groups who traditionally got all the tax dollars handed to them. Did you just move here from Iowa, Ms. Naive?

  • http://deleted candycane1

We have a lot of wonderful athletes in this town, but the wonderful ones, don't like Fenty. They can run and think at the same time.

  • Kylie

Fenty's signs have been available for almost a year and they cant pay people to take them.

  • JT

"Try to make your neighborhood Fentyville"
OOHH HELL NOOOOOOooooooo. Again, the Fenty
folks go down THAT road. This is the District of Columbia!! Get some class people and have some pride.
This is not his town to decorate. Fenty has got to go!!

  • hymesb

Oh, here you guys are. Going to fill every Fenty article with our Bullshit?

The Man has done a wonderful job for this city. And there isn't a single reason for him not to be re-elected.

Accusations about contratcts that never went thru don't justify returning the Barry days.

Our children were educated in a manner where functional illiteracy was the norm. The District finally is gaining respect. Finally becoming a place where people want to live. Now, we have this Barry waterboy Gray trying to revive the old days.

    Go Fenty!!!

And, I have seen plenty Fenty signs. Do you really think that someone that raised 4 million dollars doesn't have strong support? You are drinking that Barry Kool-aide just like Gray.

  • tired

Hymesb. Where are the educated children under this idiot? Collect your paycheck from us before November, because he's done. By the way even anyone finds a sign that is anybody but Fenty let me know also. Also did you just say fill all Fenty's article with ***our ** bullshit. Wow think about what you just said.

  • hymesb

    Tired,

Let me start by saying that my paycheck is coming regardless. I don't work nor do business with the district. But, if you can beat Fenty. Good for you. But, i don't think people are as stupid as you must.

And yes. You are full of...bullshit. It didn't take you five minutes to prove my point. Fenty has been in office for three years. This problem will take years to fix. But, he had the balls to start doing it.

Ok, let me think about it again.....Yes, it is bullshit.

Lower crime, better schools, parks aren't crack markets. But, i am to focus on him being arrogant. I am supposed to be mad because he doesn't meet with Maya Angelou. Fenty is called arrogant and lawless by fools that, to this day, would support Marion Barry. Yes, bullshit!

Let me think again, yes...still bulshit.

  • hymesb

    Oh... Tired.

If by "Our", you thought i meant Black people in DC. Wrong. I am Black. I love my people. I know Blacks in DC aren't full of Bullshit. But the politicl leadership is. They are more than a little full of bullshit. They accomplished what they were meant to accomplich. But it's time to retire and let new ideas and new approaches come to the front.

Fenty, at long last, broke the strangle hold that poverty pimps like Barry have had on the district. Listen to the not so subtle race-baiting that they do. Trying to blame Fenty for the plight of Black people. Yes, Bullshit.

  • Sigmund Freud

DC Voter --are they really exempt from Hatch Act? The Mayor appoints them and they can campaign for him? How foul!

  • Stephon

Who do you think signs off on the permits to shut down Washingtons busiest streets for Mr. Brodsky. Do you really believe he's supporting MC Baldie because he likes him? Mr. Fenty is a facilitator for their agenda...

  • downtown rez

Mr. Fenty is a facilitator for their agenda...
Ooh. The evil athletic agenda. That sounds very scary! Healthy, but still scary!
Oh, give me a break. Did anyone ever loose the god-given right to double-park on Sunday because of a triathlon?
    Please.

  • DCVoter

@Sigmund...I've no idea which is why I asked. They are indeed appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Council, but they also get paid an hourly rate (I believe its $25 an hour for ABC Board members) for the time they spend serving the District. It's questionable...ergo why I posed the question.

The bigger issue is why didn't DeBonis disclose that? I think that's as much a part of the story as the fact that Brodsky gets his race permits approved by the Mayor. If you're going to report local news, you need to report it all, not just what fits with the story that you're writing at the time.

  • Truth Hurts

Anyone who gets worked up by this email knows nothing about DC politics or fundraising. There will be hundreds of similar messages from those aligned with all candidates in the months to come. Relax folks.

  • noodlez

    hymesb=FENTY'S BIKE SEAT

THE EMAIL SOUNDS A LIL WHINY AND DESPERATE. "Put a Fenty for Mayor sign in your yard or on your balcony. DO NOT DELAY!" THIS IS REALLY SAD!

THE MAYOR GOT HIS FOLK SCRAMBLIN LIKE ROACHES WHEN THE LIGHT IS TURNED ON. GRAY WITH HIS OLD SCHOOL ROACH KILLERS STOMPIN HIM ON DAY 1. WHO IS RUNNIN THE FENTY SHOW? THEY SHOULD HAVE ANTICIPATED THIS AND COULD HAVE ROLLED OUT SOMETHING BETTER THAN THE BIKER BUTT BOY AND HIS GAY EMAIL.

HEY Truth Hurts ITS THE RELAXED NATURE AND POLICIES FOR AND ABOUT THE TRUE WASHINGTONIANS THAT IS GOING TO GET FENTY'S ASS BOUNCED.

    GRAY WON DAY 1!
HE KILLED 'EM WITH "WE CAN DO BETTER"

  • hymesb

    NOODLEZ=ricky martin,

Man, just come out the closet. You sound like an ignorant, self-denying homosexual. You should join the republican national committee. Get out of the closet, put on your dress and let go of your anger. Who knows, one day you can marry your boyfriend and thank Fenty for signing it into law.

  • Truth Hurts

    noodlez,
If Gray wins, it will be due to two factors: 1) Fenty is perceived as arrogant/out of touch with typical DC voters (his own fault) and 2) Gray's "one city/we can do better" slogan achieves its intended goal, ie, plays on racial prejudices.

Gray is not the answer. I think you hate Fenty more than you like Gray. And I hate Gray more than I like Fenty. The "one city/we can do better" line is all focus group/consultant bs and you know it.

  • noodlez

@ hymesb YOU SCORED W/THE RICKY MARTIN COMEBACK THEN YOU GO 3 AND OUT WITH THE TIRED HOMO REFERENCE.

JUST LIKE MY 'SKINS ALL INCONSISTENT AND SHIT.

FENTY, RHEE AND GAYTANIA MUST GO!

  • noodlez

Truth Hurts THE "WE CAN DO BETTER" SLOGAN DOESNT PLAY ON RACIAL PREJUDICE IT PLAYS TO CLASS PREJUDICE. THERE ARE WHITE AND LATINO FOLK HURTIN IN THE CITY TOO!

HOWEVER, I WOULD BE WILLING TO CONCEDE THAT ITS A FOCUS GROUP/CONSULTANT LINE IF YOU WOULD CONCEDE THAT GRAY WON DAY 1.

COME ON SLIM GRAY CAME OUT WITH A ONE-LINER THAT IS CLEAN, CONSISE AND SERVICABLE THROUGHOUT HIS CAMPAIGN. FENTY HAD SOME FLUNKY COME OUT WITH AN BLABBERING EMAIL BEGGING. WOW!

DONT SULK! IM SURE YA BOY WILL FIGURE SOMETHING OUT.

  • Truth Hurts

And everybody was ... hand dancing, hand dancing

  • noodlez

SLIM DONT HATE ON HAND DANCING. THAT SHIT IS A WORK OUT. BAMA'S ALL SWEATY FROM PUTTIN IN WORK ON THE DANCE FLOOR LIKE THEY JUST RAN A GAME OF BALL. ALSO, GREAT WAY TO CONNECT TO MIDDLE CLASS FOLK OF THE CITY. THATS ALL THEY DO!

MY WIFE HAD ME TAKE LESSONS WITH HER. WE WENT TO THREE CLASSES AND BAILED.

And everybody was ... hand dancing, hand dancing AFTER FENTY LOSS.

  • hymesb

    Noodlez,

I wasn't joking. And if you heard it before, then you should pay attention. Really, you have called people gay like 1,000 times in the last few months. It is a fixation with you. Or, perhaps you should try a new line.

Btw, the electric slide is a work out. Shoveling snow is a work out. That don't make you an athlete.

  • LifeTime

BullSh_t. They think we are idiots paying for there bike and bike transporation, police escorts, hand dance classes, signs and maybe there damn cooking class. Give me a break. What about the children, the Homeless? There children and grandchildren aren't hurting with education or food. Yes, FENTY did a little and I mean a little just like the men and women before him, but I'm sick of a little.

Hymesb, sorry but our children education is a triathlon. Please the District didn't gain respect, because of FENTY. Check the WHITE HOUSE!

  • Ward 8 Rez

hymesb I never have and never will cast a vote for crackhead azz Marion Barry and I sure as hell don't support Smenty!! I just signed up for Gray's "We Can Do Better" campaign!!

  • noodlez

hymesb-DAMN! ONLY A 1000? IM SLIPPIN. MY NUMBERS ARE USUALLY UP AROUND THE 2000 A MONTH RANGE. DONT TAKE MY ATTACKS ON YOUR SEXUALITY PERSONAL. YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE.

I DONT HATE HOMOSEXUALS, GAYS OR WHATEVA THEY WANT TO CALL THEMSELVES THESE DAYS. I AM AGAINST TWO MEN GETTING MARRIED AND CALLING THEMSELVES EQUAL TO MY WIFE AND I. IM ALSO PISSED THAT LEGISLATION THAT WAS PUT TO A VOTE IN EVERY OTHER INSTANCE WAS FORCED THROUGH BEHIND OUR BACKS BY GAYTANIA AND FAGGIE FENTY. SO NOW THAT YOU HAVE MY TAKE ON THE FIXATION MAYBE YOU'LL UNDERSTAND MY COMMENTS BETTER.

BY THE WAY SHIT FOR BRAINS ONE CAN ARGUE THAT DOING THE ELECTRIC SLIDE, HAND DANCING AND SHOVELING SNOW ON A CONSISTANT BASIS IS ATHLETIC. CHECK YOURSELF BEFORE YOU WRECK YOURSELF!

  • Christopher

As a sports fan and one who particularly supports youth sports, I appreciate the fact that under Mayor Fenty, many of the citys amateur sports facilities have been improved to a point that most take a back seat to NONE in the area. In fact having grown up across the river in Virginia, many of the high school football fields, tracks, and seating areas at DCPS are now the equal to what exists at Northern Virginia public schools.

Having written that, it wasn't a mayoral discretionary fund that build those facilities. It was money found, and approved, in the budget by the DC City Council.

I have no horse in the Mayors race because as a registered No Party, I can't vote in the Democratic primary anyway, but Mr. Brodsky would be wise to understand that all those sports that he likes and feels are FINANCIALLY supported, were done so jointly by both the Mayor and the DC Council.

PS, to those who might be with the National Marathon, next year how about finding a route that won't shut down a major cross route in Minnesota Avenue SE, or access on Sousa Bridge and Pennsylvania Avenue for almost 5 hours, which also resulted in canceled Metrobus service for an area that is the most transit dependent in the city.

  • tired

First of all hymesb what he did was disrespect 2 female icons Angelou and Height. No one ever said get mad, but what is wrong with respecting your elders I know your parents taught you that. That is what is wrong with our kids, they see crap like that and they think it is okay it is not. Again you are entitled to your opinion as a taxpayer. But I have that same right. Fenty's arrogance and lack of transparency are mind blogging.

  • sedcdude

    FUCK FENTY!

  • pah

GO Fenty. All his obese haters typing from their keyboards whod quit being slobs and get a clue.

Fenty has done things very unorthodox and that has largely saved his behind. From Mcghee to new development projects using non-bureaucratic ways has at least made him look like an anti-establishment guy and now this climate fits in perfectly with his image.
I agree he needs to tone down his “amateur” supporters and not be seen as union, thuggish as some Tea party videos depicted union workers confronting them. That gave the teaparty huge support and sympathy in this anti- establishment climate.

FENTY is the man. All haters-- keep watching or learn to appreciate him. Fit as a fiddle, float like a butterfly but stings like a bee!!

...
