Vincent Gray Files for Mayor Run, Says ‘We Can Do Better’

0330gray

Vincent C. Gray kicked off his challenge to incumbent Mayor Adrian M. Fenty this afternoon, telling a crowd of more than 100 outside the Frank D. Reeves Center, "We can do better in the District of Columbia."

But that was about all that Gray said.

Aside from a nod to "connecting with every voter that we possibly can to get our message out about why I will be the best candidate for mayor in the District of Columbia," Gray did not venture an explanation of why he was running.

"We're gonna talk about all that as the campaign unfolds," he said, standing in front a crowd rich in union officials, ex-government muckamucks, and Fenty malcontents.

His complete remarks:

Good afternoon everybody. I am absolutely delighted to be here filing my papers to run for mayor of the District of Columbia. For those of you who don't know, and I'd be happy to repeat it as many times as I do, I'm a native Washingtonian, I'm a graduate of the public schools of the District of Columbia, I went to George Washington University. In essence, I am a dyed in the wool homey. I absolutely love this city and I'm delighted to be able to step up to provide additional leadership in the District of Columbia. I look forward to a wonderful campaign, I look forward to connecting with everybody I possibly can in the city. The reality is, we can do better in the District of Columbia. We can do better. We can do better. And we will be talking about the ways in which we can do better during the course of this campaign. The campaign starts today. It started at 2:22 p.m. today. We look forward to continuing to do the business of the city but most of all connecting with every voter that we possibly can to get our message out about why I will be the best candidate for mayor in the District of Columbia.

At that point, WRC-TV's Tom Sherwood asked, "What's that message?"

Said Gray: "We're gonna talk about all that as the campaign unfolds. As you all well know, there will be plenty of opportunity for us to talk about the issues; we will talk about any issue that anyone wants to talk about. But today is a day for celebration. Today is an opportunity to think upon the fact that we've filed, and we will talk about all of the issues later."

With that, Gray was whisked away in a waiting Mercedes.

There is some indication of Gray's campaign rhetoric. Signs wielded by supporters this afternoon were emblazoned with an updated version Gray's "One City" logo on one side. And his new Web site offers this slogan: "One City. Leadership We Need." So there's that.

Does the reliance on and repetition of being a "native Washingtonian" ring hollow with a city residency that's increasingly not "native Washingtonian"?

  • Mike

Finally a grown up for mayor!

  • Tom

It does if he's trying to reach out to his natural base of Washingtonians in Ward 7 and 8, and I'm sure those anti Fenty voters will not hold it against him.

  • noodlez

Political Observer DONT MISCONSTRUE A FEW GAY, WHITE FOLK FLOCKIN HERE FOR THEIR MARRAIGE CERT AS "a city residency that's increasingly not "native Washingtonian".

THAT IS HOW RUMORS GET STARTED! PLEASE STAY IN YOUR LANE.

  • http://rickmangus@aol.com Rick Mangus

This anouncemnet was as exciting as watching mold grow!

  • DC Voter

For some reason, when an African American candidate stresses he/she is a "native Washingtonian" it plays to the white guilt of the new arrivals. I never quite figured out why. Maybe its that old white liberal mind set that tries to say that we're one of you.

I suspect Gray uses that term to appeal not only to black Washingtonians in Warda 1,4,5,6,7 and 8, but to the white liberals in Wards 1, 2 and 6. Ward 3 is another story.

  • Native Washingtonian

You're right Mr. Gray... We Can do better... better than you or Peebles!

    Go Fenty!!!

  • hymesb

We ARE doing better. Better than ever.

Why in the world change directions for a man that is:

    1) in Marion Barry's pocket

    2) Too old to serve more than one term. If he makes it thru one term.

    3) Only justification for running is that he in not Fenty.

    4) Is either a grandstander or a petty old man. Who the hell argues over baseball tickets? And like my mother always says. There are two sides to every fight. And Vincent Gray has been picking fights with Fenty since day one.

  • Senility

    Mike,

Gray isn't just a grown up. He is a senior citizen. That guy looks and acts like an angry old man. Well, a grumpy, old dead man actually. He looks spooky.

And, what is with this bs about him playing baseball. Sure, and his hair is still black too. Maybe he played 30 years ago. He would break his hip swinging at the ball.

Thank you Vincent -- I voted for Linda Cropp for Mayor as a responsible, uncorrupt adult and Fenty got in on his charisma. Now we have a chance to correct his arrogance and fraud and send him back to private practice -- oh, that's right he misused funds from an elderly ward -- maybe he can get a job as a male athletic model.

  • tired

Senility, why do you have to go there? So you want someone in that lies cheats and steals from the citizens. And if you like that kind of government stick to that. But give me a person who can walk and chew gum at the same time. Give me accountability not your behind to kiss.

This announcement was as exciting as a new spring day, a breath of fresh air and the hope of new leadership in the District. He mentions that he is a home grown Washingtonian to place emphasis on how much he loves his city, our city.

I would think if you moved to DC, it was for a purpose and if you decided to make DC home you have come to love it too - White, Black, Latino or other....

Dude gotta fix his hair....(Coming from a BALD guy - that's saying something.

  • proballdc

Vincent Gray has my support and vote. I don't think "theft from a dead man's family" is in his past, as it is Fenty's.

  • Senility

    Tired,

I went there. That is a real consern. He is older and he looks sickly. Personally, his Jet Black Dye job just shows that he is prideful and vain. I could be wring though. But, trying to claim that he is an athlete is just ridiculous. I owuld have believed shuffle boarder. Or Treadmill walker. But he ain't throwing no baseballs further than 15 feet.

"lies, cheats, and steals from citizens".

What makes you think I am a Barry supporter. That is what I am railing against. And, Gray did nothing when that lady told him what Barry was doing. He just told her to "work it out with Marion." He didn't do a thing until it came up in the national news when Barry sniffed too much coke and threw that lady out of his room for not giving him head.

  • Truth Hurts

Go Vince! I've been yearning to live in your one city where all Fenty haters are welcome. I'm white, not registered as a DC Democrat, and have many family members and LLC's anxious to max out on contributions to you. Where do I send the $?

  • D

I give Gray about 2 months before his ethics problems overshadow every comment he makes in the press. the fence issue is the tip of the iceberg. All you Gray supporters are going to have to fess up why you'd vote for someone who'd lie about the fence.

  • noodlez

I SEE ALL YOU FENTY DICK RIDERS FLINCHING! ALL YALL BITCHES GOT IS A DAMN FENCE THAT IS QUESTIONABLE BEACUSE DCRA UNDER FENTY'S WATCH CANT EVEN DO THEIR DAMN JOB. SHIT YOU EVEN GOT GRAHAM WHALIN. TSK-TSK.

THIS SHIT IS TO FUNNY. THERE IS NOT ONE POLL OUT THERE THAT SHOWS FAGGIE FENTY IN A POSITIVE LIGHT. YET YOU SCROTUM HOLDERS CONTINUE TO JUGGLE HIS BALLS WHILE HE IS GETTING NO HELP FROM THE VERY FOLKS HE WAS FUNNELLING MONEY TO AND MAKING SHADY DEALS FOR.

THE CLOWN IS DONE! FENTY HAD HIS CHANCE AND BLEW IT. HE BUT POLITICS BEFORE PEOPLE. THE SAD PART OF ALL THIS IS THAT HE IS NOT EVEN A GOOD POLITICIAN. DUMB ASS MOFO COULDNT EVEN WAIT TIL HIS 2ND TERM TO DO HIS CORRUPTION. HE WAS SO BUSY PUTTING THAT BIKE SEAT UP HIS ASS THAT HE FORGOT WHY HE WAS ELECTED. WHAT A WASTE.

    WE CAN DO BETTER!

"We ARE doing better. Better than ever."

LOLOL!! Say that three times and click your heels together and we'll find out just how much better come April Fool's Day.

That's the day Fenty submits his adjusted 2010 budget with $200 million in cuts, and who knows how big a hole ripped in the 2011 figures.

  • Truth Hurts

Man, i just looked closely at the we can do better photo. Whoa, gotta take some sleeping meds. Look at that photo and try to sleep?!?!

  • not impressed

So let Fenty and his supporters tell it. Nothing got done in this city for 8 years under Mayor Williams administration. Trash didn't get picked up. Streets weren't plowed. Fenty enjoyed the fruits of Mayor Williams labor. The "Barry Horton-esque" fear game will now be put into full gear. You know fear game that those types will try to ingrain into a particular voting block, that the city will be thrown into the Barry years again if Fenty isn't Mayor. Let the fear game begin.

Mr DeBonis later on down the line please give me credit for the term "Barry Horton-esque". Thanks ;)

    Is Noodlez writing Gray's speeches?

  • WARD4NDC

I am a native Washingtonian born in the old Freedmans Hospital. I am not impressed by King Fenty or D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray.

Senility, there are a lot of men who die their hair over 40, not just Vincent Gray. Tom Cruse, Brad Pritt, Denzel Washington, etc. with the exception of King Fenty and his bisexual father in Mount Pleasant Ward 1 Washington. These 2 bisexual hippies are bald.

  • Sigmund Freud

Yeah Noodlez. And Mike Debonis, what happened to that$12000 bike King Fenty got to massage his prostate? Did we ever hear from the Secretary of the Council how it was handled???????????????????????????????????????????????////////

  • proballdc

What the Fenty supporters who hurl personal insults at Gray's age and appearance fail to realize, is that personal assaults is what sank Linda Cropps bid for Mayor. So, I say, keep it going, the ugly part of the liberal left, what Fenty calls his base in this city, is going to tear him apart from inside out.

  • LifeTime

I'm not impressed by Bike rider Fenty or Hand Dancing Gray. Where is Mayor Williams and his mother?

  • noodlez

@D YOUR LUST FOR THE FENT-MAN IS NO SECRET SO DONT HATE CUZ YA BOY GOT SMACKED ON THE FIRST DAY. HE HAD IT COMING!
