Armed Teen Opens Fire in Silver Spring
Three friends were hanging out in front of an apartment building in the the 2400 block of Ross Road in Rosemary Hills on Saturday in Silver Spring when the night took a turn for the worse. One of the men was blocking the door when a 17-year-old girl attempted to leave the building. The man eventually moved, Montgomery County police say, but the parties exchanged words and the girl threatened to bring back a friend—an armed friend—to defend her honor. The three guys weren't impressed with the threat, and continued to hang out.
Some 20 minutes later, the girl allegedly made good on her promise, showing up with Joel Manuel Moreno, 16. Police believe Moreno argued with the men and then took out a gun and started firing. Luckily, he was a bad shot: No one was struck or injured. Moreno started running away, but two of the men he'd fired at gave chase—and saw him go into his apartment. Police found Moreno at his home "and took him into custody without incident. During the execution of a search warrant, a loaded handgun was found in the closet," Montgomery County cops say. Moreno is being charged as an adult with "three counts of first-degree assault, three counts of second-degree assault, two counts of possession of a firearm/ammunition by a minor, three counts of reckless endangerment, and possession of a handgun to commit a crime of violence."
