Is Don Peebles Ready to Run?

Scuttlebutt this week has centered around D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray possibly announcing a mayoral run this week. But developer R. Donahue Peebles remains very much in the mix.

A hint that the wheels are in motion: Asher Corson, an ambitious young Foggy Bottom activist and staffer for Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh, resigned from his council job last Wednesday.

Corson has developed close ties to Peebles, dating back to the megadeveloper's pursuit of the Stevens School redevelopment project. Peebles ended up losing the bid, but not before getting the endorsement of the Foggy Bottom Association, of which Corson is president.

"You will know what I'm doing by next Monday," Corson says. "That doesn't mean that you'll know what anybody else is doing."

Corson did say this: He will not be joining a Gray campaign.

Of his relationship to Peebles, he says, "We've developed a personal friendship."

Another developments: Peebles has reportedly hired Andi Pringle, a veteran of Howard Dean's 2004 presidential campaign.

Sources indicated to LL late last month that Pringle had been advising him and organizing community outreach as he comes to a decision.

Peebles spokesperson Kendall Pryles reiterated her boss' January statement that he is not "at this time" seeking office. "But he has and many of us do have concerns, because of the path of [the Fenty] administration, that the District is in greater and greater need of a leader," she says.

As for the personnel rumblings, Pryles says: "We're a little premature on that stuff."

If he runs, he will lose. No way he will be able to score the margins he needs in Ward 7 & 8 to beat Fenty. I dont care how much money he spends, he does not have the name recognition nor electoral history that he'll need in most Wards of the city.

  • Typical DC BS

If he runs, Fenty wins. Sad that a dude who hasn't lived in DC for several years thinks he can drop on back in and run for office here. THIS ISN'T NY.

  • John Rawls

Jordan, to quote a great man: "that is just, like, your opinion man." With Peebles' deep roots in the District, there is no question that he will dominate Fenty in Wards 7 & 8. That is, if he runs.

  • DC Hoodrat

Peebles... Hmmm. Well at least he'll have the money to compete with Fenty.

However, Adrian's gapped-tooth, lisp-speaking ass has surprised people before. Not many people expected him to challenge the DC Nigga Establishment and beat Linda Crapp, but he did.

  • Mike

check out the voter turnout in 7 & 8 - they don't go to the polls unless someone pays them

  • downtown rez

    Or feeds and buses them.

  • D

I will gladly take bets on Fenty wiping out the competition.

People are angry at him, but they're the stupid people. A woman loudly complained on our PTA mailing list that the city didn't shovel out people's cars on the street.

She's angry, but she's an idiot, basically that's who's against Fenty this time around- selfish dweebs.

  • DC Hoodrat

Yeah... Wards 7&8 haven't been gentrified enough to actually expect a substantial increase in voter turnout. Like Mike and drez have poignatly stated, voters in that area only vote if they are gonna get something in return... not out of civic pride or obligation.

Pebbles may have neough money though to buy crack, malt liquor, mambo sauce, and "curry-out" wings to propel W7 and W8 voter turnout to historic highs.

Still don't see him beating Fenty though.

  • http://moreperfectdc.blogspot.com/ Jordan

Deep roots in ward 7&8??? He's a guy who came back to DC from Miami with a blonde caucasian wife after making millions off of Barry and the DC Government's real estate give away. How does that speak to the folks of east of the river?
He has no politcal machine, no electoral experience and no message.

I actually am not a fan of the Mayor but I'm keeping it real. If he wanted to win this campaign he needed to have started in June of 2009 NOT 6 months out. Also you don't hire a veteran of Howard Deans campaign to run a local race for Mayor.

John Rawls, my comment is that he wont be able to get the margins he needs, not that he wouldnt win the wards.

  • Richard

Can we stop the inane, unhelpful, and outright racist stereotypical lambasts DC Hoodrat?

And voting is about setting expectations for what we, the citizens, expect from our elected officials. I'd rather have a city of people who vote because they want something and will hold their official's feet to the fire as oppose to individuals who vote like lemurs because they are expected to. Disingenuous voting leads to mass corruption because people vote but don't expect and don't care. And we have already seen plenty of that throughout the country. I can do without more.

  • Wonder Woman

If Gray does enter the race, then consider Peebles as the designated spoiler brought in by the folks behind the scenes who support Fenty. Campaign strategy at its best!

  • http://CityDesk TONY

Gray and Peebles are very dull people.

  • DC Voter

Andi Pringle is a nice, honest person but Pimples is no Howard Dean.

  • Dave

    DC Hoodrat is Chuck Thies.

  • DC Hoodrat

So people who get bussed to the polls and bribed with Horace and Dickey fish sandwiches are voting their conscience, Richard?

  • Anita

If I sign a lease in DC, the next thing I will do is register to vote...as an independent. These bammas make Democrats look really bad, but I have absolutely no love for Republicans.

  • Truth Hurts

Stay tuned for a trifecta: some combination of Gray, Peebles, and Brown coordinating mayoral, council chair and council member announcements. Fairly creative, I'll give them that.

  • Stone

When and if Gray decides to declare his intent to run for mayor I would only hope Peebles will decide not to enter the race and support Gray. I agree if DP enters it will dilute the vote in favor of Fenty.

Whatever may be the case, this next election will be very exciting.

  • Stephon

I'll put my money on Don winning with a knockout in the 12th round..... But it will be a good fight!!

  • proballdc

Mike and Downtown, I think I see your's eyes through those white sheets. What nasty generalizations, of course WRONG, you make about the voters of Wards 7 & 8. You completely disreagard the citizens who exercise their right to vote in those wards at every option without extra compulsion. I know plenty.

I once figured as much about you, but now all mystery is removed.

  • Ward5Voter

Don Peebles will definitely be able to garner very strong support in Ward 5 ! Ward 5 has been largely ignored under the Fenty administration and he's got to go ! I think Peebles will be able to capitalize on the anti-Fenty sentiment that is growning to be quite strong throughout the city ! We need somebody as Mayor who will be an independent thinker and not beholden to special interest and a few cronies(crooks). It's clear that Fenty is bought and paid for. Just look at how he's selling us out !

  • downtown rez

Oh blah blah. I didn't say it was right or I approve.
But numbers don't lie, and I know a little something about GOTV efforts in our fine city.
Shove your mock outrage where the sun doesn't shine.

  • Sally

#1 - it's very hard to see how Peebles can win. He has no organization, no base of support, no position on issues. and no record of public service. All he's got going for him is that he's not Fenty and that he's got oodles of money. He got his start as a Barry crony and served in a shady gov't appointed post. And then he left town. For about 20 years. But he kept his mansion in Ward 3 because, you know, he keeps it real. Even if he doesn't live here. And, how will a white wife play in the East O' the River areas? Or will he keep his wife far away from the media attention becuase he knows that won't go over well?

#2 - From what I heard, Richie Rich Corson was told it was time for him to find a new job. He also had a strong habit of blending his Foggy Bottom Association work with his Cheh work, much to the apparent displeasure of Cheh. Whatever. It's one fewer white male in the Cheh office, only to be replaced by another white male.

    RUN!, Don, RUN!

  • Anonymous

lololol... you guys are pretty funny. As if the mayoral race is going to be determined by a bunch of hacks posting gossip, rumor and innuendo on the WCP blog.

  • downtown rez

Oh, but this is The Center Of DC's Political Universe!

  • The King

    bwahahahaha.... yeah, and I'm Elvis.

  • Anonymous, too

    "Or feeds and buses them."

Or gives MD residents inflated multimillion "construction" contracts and looks away while they vote in DC elections.

  • Ugly and getting uglier

Other than "I am not Fenty", what platform will any of them have? Stop School reform? Fire Lanier (remember, she was the original Rhee, before she did such a good job that people had to shut up.). Oh, I remember, ethics! Well, that is out the window. So what u gonna do? Gray's Fence and Comcast pimp move is still dangling out there. Wanna bet when it gets resolved?

Take all the character assasination stuff away and Fenty has a pretty incredible list of accomplishments. Especially for someone so young.
And, people don't want to go back to the days of Barry. Gray and Peebles are tied to that.

And you" Anyone but Fenty" guys keep acting like Fenty doesn't have 4 mil to tell that story.

He has been courting individual voters for over a year now.

You really want to run against someone that has 4m, a years head start, outstanding performance record?

And what is expected to get them past all that? Manufactured Black anger. Let me know how that works out for ya.

Interesting though, while Harry Thomas was blaming his parking tickets on Fenty...he did bring up an illustrative point. But I think he pointed at the wrong person.

There are A LOT of people that like Fenty. That is why he won every precinct last time. And, why has 4M now.
Even those fake polls have people saying that they like what he is doing. They just can't reconcile it with all the smoke kicked up by the council.

The steady stream of negativity from the Barry/Gray cabal and some risky decisions started chipping away at his image. Bad news spreads faster than good. And, in this economy, with so many people suffering, the first person to blame is government. " Blacks in 5,7,8. Owe there problems to Fenty.". "This rests at the feet of the executive". All that Poverty pimp stuff.

So, what is happening now? Fenty supporters are not defending him...they are attacking the opponents. And, seemingly, without being asked.

It seems that they realize that if Fenty loses...DC will be run by the same people that ran it while it was the crack/murder capital of the world. Business interests really have motivation. Gray has already shown that he is willing to demonize and virtually black-list fenty supporters.

As Gray/Barry/Thomas/Brown have shown. If you insult someone enough..it will start to stick.

So, now they live in the world they created. They can't pimp free home repairs, ignore parking tickets, create non-profits to funnel money thru. People will report if they argue with there wives or have girlfriends/boyfriends on the side. Or, if convicted felons are throwing you fundraisers in Balitmore. Or, if you try to pimp them for money using council stationary.
And, if you follow the Mayor around town taking pictures of him riding his bike (which has to be illegal) and making hey out of it. Don't be suprised if people see you getting booted for not paying parking tickets.

Not because people really care about that stuff. But because they won't let Gray/Barry muckrack themselves into power. So, what is good for the goose is good for the gander. And, unfortunatly for everyone, the dirt ain't started flying yet.

  • 316pr

People...People! Let's see what the prospective candidates bring to the proverbial table and have the elections play out on its merit.

The Ward 7&8 votes and more than anything people should not be marginalized or pegged to be incompetent!

Ask yourself...Do we need an adjustment in our political scene?

  • hymesb

    @Anonamous,

"lololol... you guys are pretty funny. As if the mayoral race is going to be determined by a bunch of hacks posting gossip, rumor and innuendo on the WCP blog"

No, I guess not. Maybe it will be determined by a bunch of hacks on the City Council spreading gossip, rumors, and innuendo. They are a much more willing and consistent source.

  • noodlez

@Ugly and getting uglier-HEY DUMB ASS THE "I am not Fenty" PLATFORM IS ALL THEY NEED!

"Take all the character assasination stuff away and Fenty has a pretty incredible list of accomplishments." ALL OF FENTY'S SHIT IS SELF INFLICTED AND THEY FAR OUTWEIGH ANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

    WHAT HAS HE DONE?

NAME THREE THINGS THAT HE CAN PUT HIS SIGNATURE ON THAT WASNT IN THE HOPPER WHEN MAYOR WILLIAMS WAS IN OFFICE?

  • downtown rez

    Obvious but important point:
What's "in the hopper" isn't what really matters. There is and always was a lot of stuff "in the hopper". Shit died "in the hopper.
What's more important is what actually makes it out of the hopper and is translated into reality.
School reform and facilities modernization are prime examples. People had been planning and talking about those things for forever.

  • Truth Hurts

@ ugly and getting uglier: Your observations in comment #29 are very astute. Nobody connected with Fenty has encouraged my posts about potential mayoral candidates. And even if they read comments by Truth Hurts, they don't know who I am. I simply can't stomach the hypocritical, race baiting tactics employed by the Gray/Peebles/Barry/Thomas/Brown crowd or the prospect of DC returning to the mess it was in 10 years ago.

Although Fenty's made some dumb and petty moves as mayor, I think he's beginning to learn from his mistakes. Regardless, these other guys aren't the answer -- they'll only reverse the District's progress in recent years.

  • noodlez

@downtown rez-YOUR HOPPER POINT WELL TAKEN.

downtown rez WE RAN THAT "facilities modernization" HORSE YESTERDAY. THAT SHIT IS OUT TO PASTURE.

LOOK HERE BRO "NEW AND IMPROVED BRICKS DOES NOT A CITY MAKE. IT ONLY MAKES THOSE WHO BUILT AND IMPROVED RICHER."

DUDE GETTING RID OF A MUCH NEEDED RESOURCE (TEACHERS) THE WAY SHE DID AND TO DO IT WITH OUT A PLAN TO REPLENTISH THEM IS NOT REFORM ITS STUPIDITY AND BORDERLINE CRIMINAL. WHAT QUALITY TEACHER IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD WANT TO COME AND WORK IN THE DCPS WHEN THEY CAN EASILY GET A JOB IN A SYSTEM WITH BETTER LEADERSHIP AND A BETTER FUTURE.

SO IM STILL ASKING ALL YOU FENTY RIDERS TO NAME THREE THINGS THAT THIS MAYOR CAN CLAIM THAT HE IMPLEMENTED FROM THE ROOTA TO THE TOOTA?

OH AND TELL YOUR BUTT BOY THAT 10YRS AGO MAYOR BOW TIE WAS RUNNIN SHIT AND PUTTING THINGS IN PLACE FOR THE CITY TO BEGIN ITS POSITIVE TRANSFORMATION. OTHER THAN CLOSING DC GENERAL I'LL GIVE THE BROTHER A 7.5 ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10. FENTY IS A 2 AT BEST AND WE DONT NEED SOMEONE WHO IS LEARNING FROM HIS MISTATKES AT OUR EXPENSE. SHIT EVEN SHARON PRATT WAS A 4.

  • downtown rez

    noodlez:
At heart I'm a pretty simple family guy. For me, school improvement and park improvement are #'s 1 and 2, and continued decreases in crime is #3. And I've seen all of that in Fenty's time. Oh, and it also doesn't hurt that I can get most of my little issues taken care of by a quick call to 311.
    I'm good.

  • Lightkeeper

If Gray gets in the race he will draw the support from the MANY disaffected DC citizens that do not share the crap about how wonderful the young prince has been to his subjects. Fenty does not have the people skills that he pretended to have when he ran the first time. His arrogance and self-serving performance has taken away his opportunity to maintain an easy hold on the mayoralty. At a minimum his pettiness and poor judgment (the Nationals tickets and unwillingness to meet with Dorothy Height and Maya Angelou for example) sends the message to the community that he is much less than he convinced them he was. It will be the hard work and shoe leather of a dedicated cadre to bring him down. It can and will be done. $$$ help, but only votes determine who will be the mayor. It is time to vote this chump out!

  • Imfromhere

I don't think that most of you bloggers actually understand how this city works? Maybe its because you are not native Washingtonians, or maybe it's just because you never lived in Fenty's ward when he was on the council.

Fenty lost the support of the government worker. That government worker is the heart and soul of this city. That government worker has lived and raised their families here for decades. That government worker has several friends, family members, and supporters living here in the city. Think back and look at who was at the poles support fenty during his mayoral race. It was over-run by native Washingtonian families who believed in him. The regentrified citizens of this city, really have no say, or enough voting power to control what happens in this city. ie Barry's multiple re-elections.

Look at Fenty's background and cabinet. His mother is white Italian. I ask you, what is race is the police chief, fire chief, city administrator and so forth. What construction companies have the most awards in this city? Donatelli and Klein rings a bell, who also just happen to be close friends with Fenty.

As a native Washingtonian I here what the people outside of this blog are saying everyday. In every agency, every job, every neighborhood they are saying Fenty was only here to serve a few. Those few are the same foes who lined his campaign coffers. Those few are the same who recieved all of the construction contracts throughout this city. To make a long story short, Fenty is done!
DC is a very trendy city. Once the word is out about a politician, their career is over. I can tell by reading these blogs that many of you, are transplants from the suburbs of the DC area. You actually have NO idea what your talking about. Yet, that is okay, because your vote still only has limited weight in this regentrified city.

  • sedcdude

Drez don't know shut an is a FRAUD while this coward DC RAT uses the cover of his tagname to "get n' character"!!

All these whiteys have come to DC with prejudices and "better than you" mentalities, right along with hat ass kissing nature that propels them through life!!

Too obvious and to think these gumps BELIEVE they are fooling alyone besides themselves, let's face it YOU'RE COWARDS.....QUISLING, PASTEY, PINK TOED RACISTS!!

How in the hell did this turn into a generalization of ward 7 n' 8 voters to begin with??

What's even more pathetic are the delusional uncle toms that side and agree with these gumps, ie adrian bent's traitorious ass!

DC is in trouble when we have such weak and childish mindsets both black and white alike!

  • sedcdude

Oh what the fuck were these days exactly and who REALLY WAS TO BLAME????............

"Gray/Peebles/Barry/Thomas/Brown crowd or the prospect of DC returning to the mess it was in 10 years ago

And, people don't want to go back to the days of Barry. Gray and Peebles are tied to that"

Let's not forget these were the days of BLACK awareness and WHITE GUILT, which has now been replaced by WHITE PRIDE, FAKE, BOURGOISE, POLITICAL CORRECTNESS, THE AUTO TUNE AND BUTT INJECTIONS!!

This will be an interesting race and people are hip to Fenty's bullshit..........Marion Barry still has enough supporters to follow his endorsement, just as Imfrmhere and NOODLES have stated FENTY ain't done shit!!

...
