Ward 6 Voter,

Tommy Wells is too busy shuttling out the current student population of Eastern HS, getting the soon-to-be $76 million renovated building ready for the "new" middle and upper class families of Capitol Hill to care enough about the plight of the disadvantaged at DC General or any other shelter. He is an absolute joke! I feel for some of the people staying there as life has thrown them unexpected curve balls. We can't fully understand their situations as we're not in their shoes. Instead of judging we should be encouraging.

I am 35, black, and male. DC General would never happen to someone like me because I actually believe in and practice the concept of personal responsibility.

I sometimes secretly fantasize about what my life would be like if I were a trifling, lazy, shiftless, bastard child producing, always blaming others for my failures, nigga... but then the reality is that I am none of those things.

Once again another disaster by the DC Government. This time one can look to old Ward 6 Council Member Tommy Wells who has oversight of DC Homeless Shelters through his Committee on Human Services. The City Paper did report that Wells paid a visit to the shelter in February but typically that was all he did.

Not to get political, but Wells is at best a jerk with no understanding of his roll in DC Government. Sorry but we need to eliminate him and his staff before they do more harm to the residents of DC.

Thanks City Paper for bringing this matter to our attention. Meanwhile, Wells and his staff continue to say that the 851 people in the homeless shelter at DC General are there only for the hypothermia period scheduled to end on March 31. Officially Wells and staff continue to deny that the city's largest warehouse shelter for the homeless now exists in the middle of a residential neighborhood in Ward 6. He and his staff continue to do nothing!

Willie, it's difficult for anyone, especially a 19 year old, to deal with the tough times your family has endured. Be proud of yourself, continue helping your family, and absolutely pursue that college education. Stay off the streets and away from negative people. More bureaucratic nonsense. I didn't see any mention of Karen looking for a job... wonder why?

It’s important for DC residents like Manor who are concerned about these issues to contact their DC Council members, especially now that it’s budget season, to tell them to protect affordable housing and other vital programs from harmful cuts. The only way we can ever successfully tackle the issue of homelessness is if there’s adequate funding for affordable housing, and a healthy safety net to catch people in crisis situations. Council members need to know that their constituents care about what happens to families like Willie's. If you want to know more about the issue, you should take a look at the new Fair Budget Coalition report (www.fairbudget.org).

Anyone know how an average DC resident can help this situation? Is voting our only option? Any ruckus to be raised? I fund one families rent already to keep them in a home via my local church so I don't have much extra money to give, but any other advice?
