WaPo Editorial Board Calls For Barry To Step Down
I'm sure LL Daily will have more on this. If Councilmember Marion Barry wants to know how his lame apology is being received, he's got at least one answer. WaPo's editorial board is calling for Barry to step down. The board writes:
"It frankly is disgusting to hear Mr. Barry talk, as he did Tuesday, about the needs of his resource-poor community when his main agenda has been his own welfare. He seems not to recognize the connection between the deprivations of Ward 8 and his lack of effective leadership. If Mr. Barry were really sorry, he would realize it is time for him to make way for someone who can deliver. Or, at the very least, to pay back the money wasted on girlfriends and cronies."
Will the D.C. Council offer as strong a rebuke? Will the residents of Ward 8?

I used to think that there was actually a disparity going on in this city when it came to funding, resources and development. Now I KNOW that those things have been made available to a great extent and then stolen, misused, and mismanaged. I personally witnessed and had done to me some of the ill will of being drafted into something I thought would benefit Ward 8, only to be victimized by Barry and his Puppets. If ever I knew a puppet master, he is one. The self esteem and self worth of a bunch of the old heads is lower than a foot print. I informed some of the high chiefs about certain thievery and nothing was done. I hope people also look at the fiscal agents to ask why they wrote checks on demand for barry and his puppets. Also, ask Vince Gray and Millicent Williams why they sat silent after being presented with mountains of evidence in Dec. 2008 and Jan. 2009, that the ciphering and stealing of tax payer money was being done. Ask the questions somebody, who knew what and when did they know it. Millions of dollars could have been saved if certain people had acted after they were shown the evidence. This is an atrocity.

I heard from a reliable source in Barry's camp that in the his first campaign for the Ward 8 council seat that his secretary was directed to sign several blank checks. It was so bad in fact that a prior secretary of the campaign resigned instead of being party to this lawlessness. Someone should pull the books from both campaigns because I know for a fact that in the last election campaign workers were getting paid in cash under the table and cash campaign funds were not being recorded properly.

This is an unfortunate day in America when more effort is put into us condemning and humiliating each other rather than having an educated conversation with each other. I still perform the services I was employed to when I was Project Director of Ward 8 Clean and Sober and Ward 8 Youth Leadership Council. I still work with the youth hosting fifty last year for a summer job experience and did not get paid a dime because marion and his cronies stole it. Brenda Richardson paid herself over $100,000, Patrice Sheppard of Lydia's House and Maria Powell of BEAP should all go to jail. They wrote checks for all of his friends without questions. Someone need to run to their sites and pull their records. BEAP isn't a real organization, it is another Rev. Motley typed organization, go see for yourself, 77 Elmira Pl., SW. Last year when I began coordinating the 2009 Youth Only Leadership March, Vince, Michael, Kwame and Harry all singed on as Chairman and co-Chairs respectfully. After the newspaper articles came out, they all turned their backs on me and did not support our youth march. They are the ones who wanted to be involved, but did not do one thing after Marion called me a whistleblower. Vince even agreed to have the Youth Award Ceremony named after him but pulled back support after the articles came out. Not one of the above-mentioned lifted one finger to support a march they all wanted. Let me tell you all something, we STILL HAD THE MARCH, a Knocking Out Youth Violence, fight night, the 2009 Youth Leadership Awards, a Hip Hop Caucus (thanks Donna for funds for food) and of course the March, Saturday August 22, 2009. We created a documentary about our 'March' process which can be viewed on our website. ALl of those that stole money and did not do any work could have had their names all on the positive things that happened after they fired me, but no, they took the money and ran. Before I became the Project Manager for Ward 8 Youth Leadership Council, I coordinated the Ward 8 All-Athletes Program which brought Ballou and Anacostia athletes together. There were over three-hundred students present and was also attended by Clinton Portis, Georgetown Hoyas and several other D.C. Sports Teams. They took that money for themselves and our youth continues to suffer. Lastly, the Narcotics Anonymous meeting I started March 1, 2009 that serves Ward 8 recovering community that Marion and his cronies abandoned the same day they fired me, has an attendance of over 3000 people a month. Instead of creating nonprofits to truly provide social services,you,Barry, Bunn, Motley, and Richardson pocketed taxpayer funds to pay utility bills, give your daughter money to get her braids re-done, fancy dinners, jewelry, helped your family memebrs pay off credit debts and gave your children and underage girlfriends (Motley) taxpayer funds for shopping sprees.
Last summer, Barry and his press-woman Natalie Williams who you seem to have it out for (I'll address that in a minute) held back to back press conferences in front of the Wilson Building labeling you as a PSYCHO to NATIONAL news media in addition to allegedly kicking you out of hotel room in Denver for not performing oral sex.
Yet, ole' faithful, you are back with Marion Barry strolling around town, going to dinner, dropping him off at work to the Wilson Building in the morning the last few days and more than likely...back to sucking Marion Barry's 73 year old dick....as well.

It seems that someone is going to jail, finally. This is a policy issue, laws were broken and fraud as well as forgery were performed in a way that makes me wonder if DCRA need to change a few policies about, Fiscal Agents and Registered Agents. I was told that anyone can sign you up to be a fiscal agent or registered agent and you do not have to know about it or give written permission. I found out later that, that was erroneous. When I went to DCRA to inquire how someone could out my name and what supposed to be my son name down as agents of these Council, I was told I would have to contact the person who put our names and alleged names on the documents and ask them to remove them. Well, can the person that put our names on those Articles, please stand up?

I was thinking about this last night and I was going to post but I was just too tired.
At the end of the day there are two undeniable truths here.
1) This situation is just sad and disappointing for a lot of reasons. For Marion Barry, For Donna Watts, for the people of Ward 8 especially and even the "Poverty Pimps" who thought it was okay to sacrifice the welfare of the community to satisfy their own political and economic needs. It is sad not only because of the pain and hurt this has caused the community but this latest "scandal" has cost each one of them something and only they can really assess the damage of that cost and I think it is sad, I really do - it shouldn't have been this way.
2) This "electronic debate" and that really what it boils down to although some are better than articulating themselves than other wouldn't even be necessary if Marion Barry did what he was supposed to do and do it legally. All of this "noise" is just doing more damage to the people of Ward 8. It is costing us not only in political or economic capital but the emotional toll is just too much. Ward 8 has become the butt of too many jokes, the scorn of DC voters and the subject of parody and judgment.
It is for these reasons (and thousands more) than Marion Barry should do the right thing...the selfless thing and just resign. Acknowledge that the cost of him "staying on" and "holding on" are costing Ward 8 and the residents of DC more than we can possibly afford.
An honest and heartfelt apology (not for the cameras but for the people), full disclosure and a prompt resignation are the only thing that could - in part- restore my faith in Marion Barry. If he could do that then I think I could support his appointment to an educational institution in a monitored teaching role or in some other form of service. Even I have to agree that beneath all that self-inflicted abuse, narcissism, greed, and corruption lays a wealth of knowledge and experience; which makes this all the more sad - to see the total self destruction of someone who at one time did have the best interest of the community at heart and unfortunately lost his way and forgot that.
Anyhow, just my two cents.

Well, here is my three cents. Some people do wrong when they think like a child, gets disciplined to never do that action again. Then there are people that are dishonest, conniving, disrespectful and outright narcissistic. The later group just may have been born that way. It is in their DNA. But do we go around taking advantage of our position? Do we steal money meant for our family and community? Do our friends steal and mis-use money meant for our families and community? Do our friends sign our name to documents without our knowledge and then lie about it when asked? Do our friends write checks on demand for people who do not work just because marion Barry and Brenda Richardson said do it? The answers to all of these questions is NO! Unless you are one of Marion Barry's puppets, dishonest and greedy. If I knew marion was teaching somewhere and one of my friends or family members asked me about his class, I would tell them NOT TO TAKE HIS CLASS. You know why? Because he has poison in his heart for his own people and will misuse all of the battered, broken and disadvantaged people in Ward 8 to do his broken will. Honestly, would you want a harden criminal teaching your children how to play baseball because they once assisted the Cubs in winning the World Series? Only honest answers please......

I am thrilled that we can get back on the points we are all striving to make. Freedom of Speech is a double edged sword. Integrity, kindness and charity are very important ingredients when speaking to each other rather we agree or disagree. My 96 year old Native American grandmother said it well, "IT'S NOT WHO'S RIGHT, IT'S WHAT'S RIGHT". This is a creed I truly live by. One day we will "all" realize 'what's' is more important than the 'who'. When I volunteered and worked with Marion and Brenda, no one could have told me they would attempt to do the 'who's right'. It does not matter who you are if you are wrong, you are wrong. God favored me and I stuck to the 'what's right". Now I have acquired a new synonym. Always remember, some folk NEED an entourage behind them cheering them on, somewhat like ducks flying through the air in unison. Then there is the "stand-alone" types and in all appearance there is no one there cheering them on. But GOD, the ancestors and grace is right there. The truth will come out and it may just as well have scratch marks, bite marks and splinters all of in it, but it will be made visible.

I am curious. Knowing that before "all this" came out and before you were roped into this latest scam, when you were still a loyal Barry supporter. What would it have taken (if anything) for you to believe that Barry and Brenda and all the rest could be like this? That despite Barry committing crimes of law or judgement that he was deserving of your loyalty.
I hope you understand what I am trying to say. I am not accusing you of "blind faith" but I am trying to understand what (if anything) it will take for other Barry faithful to realize he does not have their best interest at heart.

@ The Advoc8te I was never loyal to Marion Barry and Brenda Richardson and never stated I was. I had known Marion for at least 20 years since I worked in Govt in the 90's. It wasn't until I moved East of the River that I began volunteering in the Ward 8 Office. I never asked to be paid for what I did for Ward 8. I would have continued to volunteer had I not been offered to be paid instead of volunteering. Who wouldn't want to be paid if possible, instead of doing the same job with no pay? I really believe that the money coming into Ward 8 made Brenda and Marion loose their minds and forget the true mission. This is a true sign that money, although limited, coming into Ward 8 was the first time in a long time to hit the Ward. I volunteered for over two years and never seen people act this way for a few rupees. Money is the fiduciary tool in which we transact business but for some it is "a root to evil". Why jeopardize your career, family name and reputation for peanuts? Please ask Brenda and Marion this question, not me. I stand inspection.

If she's willing to turn her back on her own son for a check how can you expect her to be a loyal and once trustworthy friend to you? I hear after Brenda had her son terminated and replaced him with Bunn's friend that the friend was being paid her sons full time salary for part time work. I also hear that Brenda in addition to getting that 100k salary was paid an additional 17k as an Executive Director for 2.5 months for the Congress Heights Mainstreets nonprofit back in 2008. Wasn't she supposed to be the Chief of Staff at the Ward 8 Constituent Services Building then? It was listed on the website. Just a bit of info I thought you'd like to know.

I don't get why you, sedcdude are so defensive about Barry. Being critical of Barry's actions does equal a criticism of black leadership. With you, it's like if Barry doesn't hold that city council seat, the whitest Republican in the world is gonna take it over. Barry has never faced a white opponent for that council seat. There are plenty of established black leaders in the ward. And there are plenty of "emerging leaders" (ha) in the ward. If Barry were to step down or retire, there are plenty of good candidates that would step up.

This "keep it in house" stuff is what got us in this problem in the first place. The only thing that can combat CORRUPTION (and that is what this was) is tranparency. We need people to tell,snitch, inform...whatever it takes when they see criminal acts perpetrated - especailly by our public officials. That is why these poverty pimps (like Barry) are so bold. They are banking on the fact that black folks won't tell on other black folks - even when they are breaking the law and hurting their own people.
I have met soooooo many really great good, honest civic leaders in Ward 8. There are easily more qualified, committed, law-abiding and tax paying leaders in Ward 8 which is why keeping Barry and his fraud crew onboard is insane.
Without writing a laundry list of Ward 8 folks who are ready, willing and able to serve I will mention just one.
Charles Wilson who ran against Barry in the last primary was and is still a great candidate. Charles was endorsed by WCP and the Washington Post and he would get my vote again in a minute.
He really loves Ward 8 and does the right thing for Ward 8 because it is the right thing to do. He does so much for the community everyday and not for accolades, not for praise and defiently not to fatten his own pocket. The man literally bleeds for the community.
I have no doubt he would be perfect to lead Ward 8 in the right direction.

Thanks. It's hard to explain but this "in-house stuff" is also at the root of why until recently people were afraid (and I mean really afraid) to speak out publicly against Barry. It was so hard to get people on camera willing to say what most of us all know - Barry is past it- because (a) they didn't want to be viewed as a "sell-out" (b) that"keeping it in-house" mentality and (c) a serious concern that to speak out publicly against Barry would result in you being punished or ostracized by his legion of povery pimps. There is a lot of bullying in Ward 8 politics - and not all of it is just verbal. You have people (i.e Mary Cuthbert) threatening to "beat people's asses" because they dare ask questions about the curroption.
It's not just about Barry but fighting the whole Barry legion of thugs and poverty pimps. It's daunting to do it when you think you are on your own.
I do think we are seeing the tied turning and more folks are becoming more comfortable speaking out or just so enraged they can't hold it in anymore.
If "snitches get stiches" then secret-keepers/accomplices should get 5-10 years in the pen.

Here's a bit of food for thought! Congress Heights Mainstreets has gone through 3 Executive Directors in a years time. The W8BC and CHMS are being ran out of the same office space. James Bunn is the Executive Director of the W8BC and the Chairman of CHMS. (3119 MLK Jr. Ave SE Wash DC 20032) Brenda Richardson is on the board of directors for both organizations.Why weren't either one of these organizations mentioned in the Bennett report? They received earmarks from CM Barry. Neither organization does anything for the community. Try attending one of their board meetings and see how many people show up.

As one who has fully appreciated my voting rights outside of the District of Columbia, I have to say that it is really sad to see that I don't like to be right about everything. I left DC more than a decade ago...and the only that's changed is that the control board is gone. I think the good folks of Ward 8 should give an impartial, underdog champion a shot at the council seat.
I don't believe in gentrifying, depleting affordable housing, or "greening" business owners to the point of business failure. I do believe that we need to address the root causes of Ward 8 dysfunction--money, mentality, and mental/physical health issues--not necessarily in that order. Let's be clear, there are a lot of accomplishments to reach under these top tier priorities.
The brainwashed followers sound like loyalists in a colony, justifying their acceptance of rule under the Monarchy. The gentrifiers sound like nobles who were perturbed by the rabble-rousing peasants...right before said nobles were riding in wagons to the guillotine.
I have personally attended ANC meetings across the City (and not for a photo op, Mayor Fenty), where I saw that liquor license renewals and neighborhood development presentations largely trumped health and public safety issues. So, Ward 8 is just a more visible symptom of DC's ill health.
Let's fix Ward 8...and make the community a model for others.
