Hi there! I am going to let the management of my building know that I am happy to pick up & take a few seniors to the grocery store to get them through this short while. Yes I am busy just like everyone else but I do have the fortunate circumstance to be able to work from home which is great. Does anyone know if the new Safeway will have a pharmacy? Will the new store be open 24/7? Is there a website to promote the new store or share info about it? I have kept up with articles on the store here & there but have missed the answers to those questions, if they have been answered. Thanks so much!! Happy Spring!

Please note that there are only a few voices making mountains out of molehills on this. The vast majority of SW residents both rich and poor see no problem with this, and are all willing to help out so that everyone's needs are provided for and so that Safeway can have a smooth transition. One ANC member and a couple of voices does not a crisis make.

At least the SW residents will have a new Safeway in April. The Safeway in Ward 5 by the Rhode Island Avenue metro is shutting down for good...as of this coming Sunday. More lost jobs, people. So stop bitching and moaning, and buy in bulk to cover the 2-week shutdown.

Am I missing something here? This new grocery store and Waterfront development is the most positive thing to happen in our community in years. The renovations of the I.M. Pei buildings, Arena Stage, The Randall School, etc. are testimonials that people care and are investing on our community. The long term ramifications? Let’s see: higher property values, more foot traffic, less crime, an attractive community with new amenities, actual ‘services’, modified behavior of area youth (the broken window theory) and a sparkling new Safeway facility that will by definition command respect from shoppers and management. I am grateful that Safeway is bothering at all to invest in a community that has worked so furiously against them instead of working with them to help stear the development. This store and the developments of SW should be celebrated, yet short sighted people who have demonized the very organizations that are trying to help us continue their rants and command the stage. 12 days without a grocery store? Two months from now? Really? Let's all fall on our swords.

There are a few people in SW raising alarm bells that only serve to create a situation, more than a month off, that has no need to materialize. There are 52 weeks of the year; Safeway will be closed for less than two of those weeks. There are a multitude of reasons I won’t shop at this current Safeway; closing their store for twelve days to cross into their new store isn’t and won’t be one of them.

As much as I hate to defend this current Safeway, the argument that we Southwest residents have kept this store open could be easily turned around that Safeway stayed in our neighborhood when nobody else would even enter. Again, this is over five weeks away. There is a Harris Teeter directly on a Metro Stop at Potomac Ave SE. If residents don’t desire to switch trains, they can take the Green Line directly to Columbia Heights and shop at the large Giant store right at the metro stop. Then there are family, friends, neighbors and churches to assist with the ample amount of time that we have to plan. At some point people have to be proactive for themselves. This is one of life’s minor inconveniences.

With five weeks to go before this cross over, can we all take a deep breath, do some individual planning and not create a panic or crisis where none exists?

Ms. MacDonald,

While you're making corrections to your story, I would ask that you amend the article to accurately reflect the information I provided to you during the interview.

I stated that we are closing the store in order to remove the existing equipment (which we own) so that the current structure can be demolished. I never said that we would move equipment from the old store to the new facility as it will be equipped with a complete set of state-of-the-art equipment. Additionally, I mentioned that once the old building is demolished, we want to have the area fenced in so that our new store can be most safely accessed by customers.

Safeway gave Georgetown residents a free delivery code for their online grocery delivery service for the entire duration of the Social Safeway outage. If they just do it for the SW ZIP codes this time then I think that's the answer here.

It wasn't so long ago that there were few supermarket choices further East on the Hill. I seem to recall the Safeway at 14th and Kentucky closed for a while during its renovations—and this predated Harris Teeter's arrival. So the only other nearby options included the SW Safeway and the Benning Road Safeway. Equally distant for elderly residents and those without cars.

Even so, Mr. Sobelsohn could help matters by acknowledging residents' concerns but encouraging them to plan ahead—and look forward to the new store.

Progress takes patience.
