Why LL Has a Problem With Leo Alexander’s ‘Anti-Illegal-Immigrant Rhetoric’

In his column this week, LL swatted away the candidacies of two declared challengers to Mayor Adrian M. Fenty in order to proffer a half-dozen more suitable candidates.

With regard to Leo Alexander, LL wrote that his "anti-illegal-immigrant rhetoric...leaves a bad taste in LL’s mouth."

That led Alexander's communication director, Debra Daniels, to issue a release last night calling LL a "second-rate reporter for having stated the attribution of "anti-illegal-immigrant rhetoric"...when you in fact have not even interviewed Leo Alexander." (Even though—yes, Debra—LL did.)

And now Martin Austermuhle has tackled the line in DCist, leading to a vigorous commenter debate.

For sure, Alexander deserves some more meat to be placed on the bones of LL's brief critique. So why does his anti-illegal-immigrant rhetoric leave a bad taste in LL's mouth?

Because it's easy, it doesn't solve much at all, and it does so by dividing the city.

Alexander speaks eloquently about how he knows poverty and how he wants to cure poverty. But he betrays little sophistication as to how to do it.

If you're running for mayor of a platform of "eliminating generational poverty," surely you have some better plan than to kick illegal immigrants to the curb so the black Washingtonians you're pandering to can take low-income jobs parking cars and working in hotels? Is that the way out of "generational poverty"?

To be fair, Alexander's Web site doesn't mention his plan to mandate the troubled E-Verify system and it also includes a smattering of proposals to address unemployment, such as "vocational education, apprenticeship training, and partnerships with government, unions, businesses, and universities," not to mention the "mandatory, non-skilled labor percentages on District projects." But he has described none of those ideas in the detail he's put forth for his anti-illegal-immigrant plan in interviews (let alone have any sort of record on the issue).

The problem—identified by every think tank and business organization in town, and most of its politicians—is that the District's unemployed workforce is woefully underprepared to take the jobs that are being created in the District and the region. That's why Kwame Brown's so big on vocational training. Why Michael Brown's big on supporting UDC. And why Adrian Fenty's so goddamn serious about fixing the D.C. Public Schools.

While Alexander's talking about addressing the "root causes" of poverty, his most specific, concrete proposal to address chronic unemployment merely mists its leaves.

Perhaps the campaign mistakenly believes it is possible to target multiple different messages to various voter groups?

  2. #2

I was attempting to listen to Leo one day until I saw who was connected to him. His field manager is Valencia Mohammed. That drama ship sunk years ago and needs to stay that way.

Please excuse me. That drama ship "sank" years ago.

"The problem---identified by every think tank and business organization in town, and most of its politicians---is that the District's unemployed workforce is woefully underprepared to take the jobs that are being created in the District and the region."

And THAT is the god honest truth!

DRez: Why is it "mistaken" for a candidate to believe the electorate is too dumb to see through multiple different messages? You're giving average voters too much credit. After all, they rallied around Vince's "one city" subliminal racist mantra.

I will say, the majority of blacks in D.C. and whites living outside of D.C. are against illegal immigration. I agree, the U.S. cannot take in all the world's poor. If we take in Haiti's 9 million people, we are doomed as a country. Pay attention, in the D.C. area and around the U.S., Mexican, Central/South American, and Dominican women are breeding babies by the hundreds of thousands daily in the United States. Everywhere you look in the D.C. area, you see young Hispanic women with 3 o 4 children and one in their belly. This shit is out of control. Blacks have been afraid to speak out on this issue, because they didn't want to be viewed as racist. We accepted illegal and legal uneducated poor Hispanics into our poor and middle class black neighborhoods in the United States. According to a 2006 study done at Duke University and UNC at Chapel Hill, Mexicans coming to Durham, North Carolina had a negative view of black Americans before coming to the United States. Illegal Mexicans stated in the survey, they had more in common with white U.S. citizens in Durham, North Carolina than black U.S. citizens. Interesting, the whites lilving in Durham, North Carolina stated, they had more in common with black U.S. citizens than the illegal alien Mexicans. I listen to Terry Anderson a black radio host in Los Angeles weekly on the Internet. Terry discusses how bad illegal immigration is in Los Angeles and how traditional black neighborhoods like Watts, South Central, and Compton are now mostly Mexican and blacks have been displaced in their neighborhoods and in employment. I am sending Terry a copy of this article.

Study Explores Anti-Black Prejudice Among Latino Immigrants

Study Explores Anti-Black Prejudice Among Latino Immigrants
New study suggests immigrants bring negative views with them from home countries.

    By Christina Asquith

Latino immigrants often hold negative views of African-Americans, which they most likely bring with them from their more-segregated Latin American countries, a new Duke University study shows.

The study also found that sharing neighborhoods with Blacks reinforces Latino’s negatives views, and reinforces their feelings that they have “more in common with Whites” — although Whites did not feel the same connection with Latinos.

“We were actually quite depressed by what we found. The presence of these attitudes doesn’t augur well for relations between these two groups,” says lead author Dr. Paula D. McClain, a Duke political science professor.

The study, “Racial Distancing in a Southern City: Latino Immigrants’ Views of Black Americans,” is based on a 2003 survey of 500 Latino, Black and White residents in Durham, N.C., a city with one of the fastest-growing Latino populations. Latinos represented 8.6 percent of Durham’s population in 2001, up from 1 percent in 1990.

Duke’s study found that Blacks did not reciprocate the negative feelings. And highly educated Hispanic respondents who socialize with Blacks were not as likely to harbor negative stereotypes.

McClain focused her study on the South because she wanted to examine what impact the Hispanic population explosion in the region was going to make on the Black/White dynamic.

“No section of the country has been more rigidly defined along a Black-White racial divide [than the South]. How these new Latino immigrants situated themselves vis-à-vis Black Americans has profound implications for the social and political fabric of the South,” McClain writes.

Among the results: Almost 59 percent of Latino immigrants reported feeling that “few or almost no Blacks are hard working.” And 57 percent found that “few or no Blacks could be trusted.”

ewer than 10 percent of White respondents held similar negative attitudes towards Blacks, suggesting that Hispanics were not adopting their negative views from Whites. Previous research on race and Latin America found that Blacks “represent the bottom rungs of society” and Duke researchers surmise Latino immigrants “might bring prejudicial attitudes with them,” the study states.

Dr. Ronald Walters, a professor of political science at the University of Maryland, calls the study “right on target.” He says that Hispanics overwhelmingly consider themselves as “White” because of the overall negatives associations with being Black.

Some say that such poor relations represent a missed opportunity for two working-class groups to partner politically. McClain intends to start a larger survey in the next year in other Southern cities, including Memphis. She hopes her findings will be more positive.

“If large portions of Latino immigrants maintain negative attitudes of Black Americans, where will this leave Blacks?” she asks. “Will Blacks find that they must not only make demands on Whites for continued progress, but also mount a fight on another front against Latinos?”

    TH-
The ability of a local politician to say one thing in one public forum and another thing in a different public forum has been greatly diminished in the past 4 or so years by online media. But even had it not, giving quotes to both Kojo and CP cements a position pretty solidly.
I have to agree with debonis that Leo's proposal "doesn't solve much at all, and it does so by dividing the city" because the problem is that "the District's unemployed workforce is woefully underprepared to take the jobs that are being created in the District and the region".
    Sad.

Let me say this, all Hispanics are not criminals or illegal aliens. Many are productive United States citizens. I feel that it is wrong for Latinos/Hispanics "NOT" to be against illegal immigration, cracking down on illegal aliens, and enforcing our immigration laws. If these were millions of blacks or whites coming from the Caribbean, Africa, or Europe, the majority of Hispanics would be for enforcing immigration laws. I am a black citizen with over 400 years of ancestry traced back to slavery in South Carolina. If these were millions of black Africans or black Caribbeans who broke U.S. laws by crossing our porous borders, I would want their behinds deported and U.S. immigration laws enforced. I am a citizen of the United States of America, not some foreign country on the continent of Africa or in the Caribbean.

  10. #10

Part of the problem with the word Hispanic is that it is used as a race. There is no such "race" as hispanic.

  11. #11

    Ward4:
"Hispanic" refers to Hispanola. It's properly used to speak of Spanish-speaking New Worlders of European decent.
"Latino" is used to speak of Spanish-speaking New-worlders of native decent.
The distinction is particularly important because the two groups self-identify using these terms. Calling one the other may well offend them. Most Salvadoreans, FYI, identify as Latino. Hence, Office of Latino Affairs as a city office.
    Just FYI.

  12. #12

Downtown rez, you are such a smart ass. Do you think because you are white, you are fucking superior to everyone who's non white? I don't like you!

  13. #13

Candycane1, you are correct, Hispanic/Latino is not a race of people. Latinos/Hispanics can be of any race. Many Latinos are black and many are white.

  14. #14

I forgot to mention, the Latino community is one of the most racist communities I've encountered. Skin color, hair texture, and facial features are important factors with many Latinos. Most Latinos identify themselves as being of the white race according to the U.S. Census.

  15. #15

    Ward 4-
I wasn't trying to be a smart ass.
I never said nor do I think that I am "superior".
I was trying to point out how choice of words matter.
Many Latino activists view Hispanics as a colonial or occupying force.
If they identify as "white" it is likely at least in part because they don't like the other choices offered.

  16. #16

YES THIS IS A PROBLEM AND IT SHOULD BE CURBED IMMEDIATELY. IT WOULD CEASE IF WE CHANGED THE ONE LAW THAT WOULD STOP THIS MADNESS. THE "IF YOUR CHILD IS BORN HERE EVEN IF YOU ARE A CITIZEN OF ANOTHER COUNTRY YOUR CHILD IS AMERICAN" LAW.

ONCE THIS IS REPEALED MOST OF THE IMMIGRANT TRAFFIC SHOULD SUBSIDE. THEN WE CAN SORT OUT REST OF ILLEGALS AND MAKE IT EASER TO SEND THEM BACK. ALSO, ANY EMPLOYER WHO HIRES ILLEGALS SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN. YES SHUT DOWN! THEY NEED TO BE PUT IN A POSITION WHERE THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FOLK THEY HIRE!

THERE SHOULD BE NO EXCUSE TO DOING BACKGROUND CHECKS ON THESE FOLKS! IF CHECK COMES BACK UNFAVORABLE THEN GOVT AGENCIES SHOULD BE NOTIFIED OR BETTER YET AUTOMATICALLY FLAGGED!

  17. #17

Until the US government summons the courage to provide massive penalties for anybody found as accomplice to assisting illegal aliens staying in America. Until businesses are fined $50.000 to $100.000 dollars for knowingly hiring each illegal immigrant, with an immediate passport to jail for any employer offering with no clemency. Or going straight to prison for at least one year on the first offense, for aiding and abetting foreign nationals. This type of rigid law will never happen, because immigration is just lip service to the public to show that Washington is superficially doing something. For decades, any kind of serious enforcement has always been trampled into the mud, by pandering politicians. If immigration laws were serious--they would have made trespassing into our country a mandatory felony as other countries, instead of a pathetic slap on the wrist. 20 to 30 million Illegal immigrants have been allowed to occupy our nation, because our lawmakers have been corrupted by the special interest lobbyists. Even the original design of the Southern border fence, was superseded by one single length instead of two, with vehicle surveillance lanes in between. More fencing and additional Border Patrol agents will not be sufficient to protect America because every one of our international airports is part of our border. Tom Tancredo previous Congressman for Colorado warns us that over 140 million international travelers passed through our 20 busiest international airports in 2008. Foreign students from the Middle East are bringing their wives and girlfriends here to have their babies in American hospitals, children who become instant American citizens – and "anchors" for their parents' future green-card applications.

Large bankrolls have changed hands by wealthy corporate concerns, adding copious incentives to party campaigns to trample new laws. This has been illustrated by Sen. Harry Reid, Majority Speaker Nancy Pelosi and even head of our Homeland Security Janet Napolitano trying to collapse E-Verify. As Part of the SAVE ACT, E-Verify is one of our strongest tools, to eject illegal workers out of American jobs. E-Verify was nearly comprised by the Liberal Democrats, but it surfaced and came to the attention of the public and anti-illegal labor bloggers. Any enforceable law such as E-Verify, 287(g) local police detainment, ICE arrest have been secretly undermined by the legislators. Not completely, but enough to make them almost worthless. Today, more than ever before--we cannot trust our government, who supposedly take this oath office to protect the United States citizenship.

May be there is a light at the end of the tunnel, with the stunned expressions of Democrats when Scott Brown, beat Martha Coakley in the Massachusetts special election. State Sen. Brown has stated he is against any kind of AMNESTY or as its called by open border zealots Comprehensive immigration reform. The Senator also said that we are encouraging more illegal immigrants to come, by awarding AMNESTY. Just as millions more are expected, if the doors remain open before President Obama should sign into law this new act. You cannot stop a deluge with just a thin line of US Border Patrol agents. This is where we must--DEMAND--stringent fines and hefty prison sentences for business owners--with no exceptions. The new second generation well-funded E-Verify will make a giant difference, that will rid this country of illegal workers and those criminal businesses that believe they are above the law.

Rep. Nathan Deal (R-Ga) is the principal author of H.R.1868, which repeals "birthright citizenship" by limiting citizenship to children born of citizens and legal permanent residents, not Tourists, foreign students, temporary workers or illegal aliens. Rep. Phil Gringrey (R-Ga) H.R.878 would end chain migration by limiting the relatives who qualify for "family reunification" to only immediate family members. Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va) bill, H.R.2305, will end the "diversity lottery" through which 55,000 green cards are awarded annually to people who are exempt from sponsorship and job-skill requirements. (Over 1.5 million legal immigrants enter America every year.) Rep. Marsha Blackburn's (R-Tn) H.R.2406 will strengthen local law enforcement's role in immigration enforcement, for example in extending the reach of 287(g) agreements between local police and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

TAXPAYERS HAVE BEEN SHINED-ON THROUGH MANY ADMINISTRATIONS OVER MANY YEARS. AMERICANS HAVE UNKNOWINGLY BEEN TAXED, TO SUPPORT INSTANT CITIZEN CHILDREN OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT MOTHERS, EDUCATION AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL TREATMENT AND FILLED OUR PLACES OF IMPRISONMENT. MASSIVE DOLLAR AMOUNTS CANNOT BE COUNTED, BUT CERTAINLY RIVAL THE APPROPRIATIONS FOR OUR WARS. Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and asked for your Senator or Congressman. In addition bombard your State Representatives to enforce state laws. GET INVOLVED AND LEARN THE TRUTH AND NOT OPEN BORDER PROPAGANDA AT NUMBERSUSA AND JUDICIAL WATCH. STOP UNSUSTAINABLE OVERPOPULATION IN OUR FUTURE.

E-Verify is one of our strongest tools, to eject illegal workers out of American jobs.

No, E-Verify is a joke. It's the most worthless piece of software in America. If it flags someone as potentially a non-citizen, the chances are that they are, in fact, a citizen -- there are far more false positives than real positives. Internal audits show that even the Social Security Administration (whose database is what E-Verify uses) routinely ignores the requirement that they use it to screen hires -- because E-Verify is just that much of a piece of crap.

Why do you have a problem with what Alexander says? Don't you know that you aren't allowed to accuse African-American DC politicians of bigotry? Apparently, because of the bigotry that they and their ancestors have experienced, they are entitled to be as bigoted as they choose.

    ______

It's kinda funny seeing these two Washington Post articles next to each other. One talks how DC comes dead last in its rating of how friendly its government is to businesses. The other talks about DC's high unemployment. Could these issues be related?

    ______

You will need to do more than improve DC's K-12 schools. They only jobs in DC that pay well require you to go to law school. Sure, there are some other paying jobs (doctors, college professors, bureaucrats). But even if you get a decent education, you can't expect everyone to become a bureaucrat. The federal government is never going to get so liberal that everyone will have a government job (what do you think Washington is? Moscow?).

  20. #20

I agree with Alexander that illegal immigrants have taken many of the jobs traditionally held by working class black folks...and jobs - like in the fast food industry - traditionally held by teenagers.

But the way Alexander's campaign attacked DeBonis with hysterical untruths - which were shown to be hysterical untruths - is beyond pathetic. They've called into question everything they have ever said or ever will say. Epic fail. Beyond stupid. If they are the kind of people who want to replace Fenty.....

  21. #21

I have been thinking the last couple of days. We as humans don't have to worry to much longer about anything, because mankind is going to destroy themselves. I notice daily, people are angry, in a hurry, tensed, full of hate, and don't give a dam. These are the last days on earth. God or Satan will not have to destroy earth. Man is going to destroy earth from greed, power, war, and sex. Yarnnnnnnnn

  25. #25

    @ Mike
I'm curious, would you hold the same conscending and tasteless humor for let's say......A WHITE MAYORAL CANDIDATE????

  26. #26

While Mr. Alexander might not have touched on it during this interview he has shown a great belief in fixing DC's poverty issue at its infancy which is the DC Public School System and our children.

No mayor including Fenty has seen the big picture concerning generational poverty and test scores of our children in DC. Have you seen the computers or internet access in DCPS? In Chevy Chase parents had to get together on the weekend to run network cables themselves to have computers in the library and most schools in the city do not have computers in the classroom, the library or a computer lab and without technology we are not giving our teachers or students the tools they need to compete with their counterparts in Montgomery and Fairfax County.

Are our DC children any less smart or our teachers any less educated? Without computers at the home or school how do some of these DC children ever know what is beyond their own city block? How do they compete for jobs or college entrance?

You will soon hear Leo Alexander's plan to standardize technology in DC public schools across the city and to provide computer and internet access to every school in every Ward as well as allowing parents to go online for attendance, report cards and homework assignments.

Previous mayors have blamed the teachers for poor test scores while city employees embezzled millions that could have easily transformed the DCPS into one we could be proud of and one that would allow our DC children to become Doctor's, Lawyers and business professionals through continued education.

The DC Mayor's race is far from over so I urge you to stay tuned for Mr. Alexander's plan to save our DC children so they can grow up and help save their parents and siblings.

  27. #27

    @ Mike
'condescending' is what I meant. I mean the facts posted by some of CPs finest reveal a troubling economical and historical reference for Mr. Alexander's campaign platform, what are your facts or stats to suggest otherwise??

  28. #28

I will make a wild prediction: Leo Alexander will not be the next Mayor of DC. Nor will he have much of an impact on the mayoral race.

    Additional predictions:

    * Don Peebles will not run for mayor b/c of all the skeletons in his closet from when he got his start in DC back in the Barry era. He likes the attention, but his flip-flopping on whether he's in or not has already cost him credibility.

    * Vince Gray will not run for mayor b/c no one knows what his platform would be, other than he's not Fenty. Plus, his resume is hardly impressive and he's got plenty of skeletons in his own closet.

    * Michael Brown will not run for mayor b/c he knows he's screwed if he gives up his at-large seat. And a Hummer-driving Chevy Chase resident won't be taken seriously as a populist.

    * Kwame Brown will not run for mayor b/c he knows he can't win and won't give up his seat. Plus, he's dumb as a post.

So who's actually going to run a plausible campaign against Fenty?

  29. #29

Obviously I can't say that all things things work in every room in every school, but I can say that they are light-years better than they were before our current mayor was elected.
It's great that Alexander would pay Fenty the compliment of trying to piggy-back on this.

Your mother should have aborted your dumb ass at birth.

  33. #33

WARD4DC: Blame the District's troubles on all the imaginary villains you want; that won't make it true -- or relevant. Even if the facts matched Mr. Alexander's imagination, immigration control is the job of the Federal government, not municipalities, counties, or states.

    We're done here.

  34. #34

    @ Mike
well damn man, if the feds fail us then who can we expect to save us?? God help us all when we start to blame the VICTIM!

  35. #35

To start I never have been a fan of Adrian Fenty, primarily from an ethical perspective. You know, stealing from the family of dead people is just a hard pill for me to swallow.

I praise him for choosing a Chancellor who had the common sense to "continue" the implementation of the school improvement plan of her predecessor, the credentialed and talented Clifford Janey. A plan that is today proving to be working. Particularly, when she has no solid experience herself in running a public school, let alone a public school system. Her claim to fame has been to serve as a dividing agent thereby increasing the difficulties of transformative change.

Leo Alexander is right and wrong at the same time. Yes, illegal immigration does result in low skilled jobs being given to untraceable illegal workers, however, were those jobs available to African Americans in the District, they would still remain low paying jobs and those workers low skilled employees. The root cause is employers that are illegally hiring these people.

I have always agreed that college isn't for everyone. Particularly in the District where early and secondary education failures have reached critical mass. You have to attack this beast from every angle. Kwame Brown has pioneered the re-establishment of trade schools in the District that will give students the opportunity to learned a skilled craft that will earn them more than the types of jobs being taken by illegal aliens. Those are the types of skilled labor jobs that will turn around those who would otherwise not make it through your traditional high school curriculum, much less college.

Alexander's message doesn't do much to elevate the expectation of African American possibilities in areas like wards 7 and 8. You don't do me a favor by firing an illegal immigrant working a dead end minimum wage job and giving that job to me when minimum wage isn't going to suddenly improve my standards of living.

Apprenticeship programs too need supported by both politicians and the District community. If we are serious about improving opportunities for all, we have to use a full court press approach.

  36. #36

And the winners are...... Skipper and Mike Licht. WARD4DC was in the running until he broke out in ignorant foul mouthed racist insults, resulting in a disqualification.

  37. #37

Mike Licht, you are part of the problem. "Immigration control is the job of the Federal government, not municipalities, counties or states." Typical liberal drivel. Following your logic, if any law officer (or US citizen, for that matter) sees an act of treason (or any other violation of federal law) being committed, they should ignore it because it's a federal problem, not theirs?

People like you are the reason our country is in big trouble. Your way of thinking - "Let's just close our eyes to problems and hope someone else deals with it."

  38. #38

Truth Hurts, I don't need your validation either. You can go to hell too along with Mike. Both your liberal BS is the reason why the United States is in turmoil.

  39. #39

Oh, I don't know about that WARD4DC. I think perhaps one factor contributing to the current unrest might have something to do with the extremism and unwillingness to compromise on both sides of the political spectrum. Perhaps if people hurled fewer epithets and were more open to discussion and compromise, we would get further on contentious issues.

    Maybe.

There's a debate going on now in Congress about taking in thousands of Haitians.

    What a mess!!

I am truly sorry for the problems in Haiti, but why should the United States have to take in Haiti's poor? The U.S. have high unemployment, crime, overcrowding in houses/apartments, citizens without healthcare, citizens on welfare/food stamps. Let Europe or some African country take these people in. I was against the United States letting Salvadorans and others get temporary status and they never left. I don't support the Haitians coming here either. It's not the U.S. responsibilty to take care of people from all over the world. Are we the world's welfare country? The U.S. focus should be on it's citizens, not Haiti's. If President Obama or Congress accept these Haitian nationals, they will see a citizen revolt all over the U.S. We the citizenry is tired of seeing our country destroyed by importing poverty from other countries. These people don't speak English, are uneducated, poor, and we have enough illegal Spanish speakers who don't speak English already in our country. U.S. citizens are doomed.

  41. #41

Reading the comments in today's Washington Post about there's debate on Capital Hill to let Haitians come to the United States. The majority of comments from U.S. citizens around the country are against this idea and citizens are fed up with illegal immigration.

I think everyone forgets that the US was built and continues to thrive on cheap and often illegal immigrant labor. A brief lesson in US history will verify this. Colonizing powers tended to pit the colonized against each other in order to rule efficiently. As a result, generations of inter-racial strife is common.

For the District, the problems isn't singular. It's a twisted combination of things that make us as uniquely fucked up as we are. We have the second highest poverty rate in the Country (behind Miss.), the lowest homeonwership rate (this contributes to the poverty rate- remember redling?), the worst math and english proficiency in the Country, even though we have the highest per person budget. Poor management has dwindled our futures and race-baiting, divisive candidates, and sheer stupidity is not going to help us people.

Out with Fenty. Bring in Cory Booker.

Noodlez, I seldom understand what you're talking about. If you are intimating that the current crop of mayoral candidates are not "black" enough for you, why not advocate for Marion Barry to run again? At least we can be confident he has smoked crack, and his previous administrations were unparalleled successes. (I know, I know, cheap shot.)

  45. #45

One week ago we celebrated MLK Day. He famously insisted on not judging a person by the color of their skin but the content of their character. He worked hard to advocate for this and was killed as a result. 40 plus years later and we aren't any better off. This time it's not white on black, but black on hispanic/latinos. When will this stuff end? Not every race follows the pattern of a few.

Noodlez- as much I like bashing you for your comments and God knows you give me a lot of fuel- this issue is really fucking sad. DC will remain the worst City (with regards to a host of statistics) as long as we continue to argue over stupid things.

FYI- Fenty isn't well-spoken and neither in Alexander.

I am tight of white America only accepting light skin Negroes over brown or darker skin Negroes. What the hell do all American mean? You do know that's code for being white in America. If you white or light you are right, but if you dark or purple, shut the fuck up, you are ugly.

I am tired of whites in America only accepting light skin Negroes over brown or darker skin Negroes. Whites see light skin Negroes with straight hair and Caucasian features as being beautiful. What the hell does all American mean? You do know that's code for being white in America. If you white or light you are right, but if you dark or purple, get to the back of the bus.

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION IT'S NOT THAT THEY ARENT BLACK ENUF. IT JUST SEEMS LIKE IF THEIR SKIN TONE IS NEUTRAL THAT IT MAKES IT MORE ACCEPTABLE FOR MAINSTREAM AND THAT IS WHO THEY WOULD IDENTIFY WITH.

WE DONT NEED MAINSTREAM HERE. WASHINGTON, DC NEED SOMEONE THAT WILL IDENTIFY WITH OUR PRESSING ISSUES. BLACK CHILDREN LACK OF OBTAINING A DECENT EDUCATION, BLACK WOMEN AND THE HIV CRISIS AND WILL SOMEONE PLEASE HAVE SOME FUCKING INTEGRITY.

@WARD4DC: You don't need my validation,I got it, but I'm not here to validate anyone. Just pointing out when posters engage in reasonable exchanges of opinions as opposed to when they resort to spewing hater jargon. You and some others have crossed the line. In the process, your credibility suffers.

Especially idiotic is this ignorant assertion in #37: " Your liberal BS is the reason why the US is in turmoil." You don't know me, that much is plain.

There are more than 160 member countries in the United Nations. Let some of those countries take in the Haitians that wish to leave their island home.

Let us start with the injured. The various nations that make up Central and South America can take in the injured, followed by the relatives of the injured.

I believe that one can receive first class care in nations such as Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, etc.

America is not for everyone and not everyone is for America. We have enough problems here with our own people. Let us help our fellow Americans. Let us repair our infrastructure. Let us address poverty here at home. Let us educate our children. We can no longer be the sole savior of the world.

Let the rest of the world help with the Haitian immigration issue. Let the rest of the world solve the Haitian immigration issue.

Truth Hurts kiss my brown ass and go to hell. I don't like you and please don't direct none of your comments towards me. If you don't like what someone have to say, keep it to yourself or ignore them. You are such an annoying asshole!

Bringing millions of Haitians here is simply not in the best interests of the United States and its citizens, however well it serves beleaguered Haitians. If OUR OWN GOVERNMENT doesn’t put the best interests of American citizens ahead of the interests of the rest of the world, WHO IS GOING TO? Post-Americanism is right. We are, for all practical purposes, second-class citizens in our own country BEHIND foreigners of all stripes, including the ones who want to kill us and destroy our culture. Our government is supposed to defend us, and our interests first and foremost. That is the basis of the Constitution, and one step back, the Social Contract. Every elected representative, at whatever level of government, needs to be called out on this, beginning with President Obama and members of Congress.

downtown rez I BROWSED THE LINK! INTERESTING HISTORY LESSON.

WE NEED TO INSTITUTE SOME ANTI-SHIT HERE IN DC. IF FOR NO OTHER REASON TO BRING ATTENTION TO OUR BELEAGUERED CITY!

@ WARD4NDC: Gee, by comment #54, you apparently forgot about your comment #38. And now you don't like me? Wah, wah, wah! Keep acting the foul mouthed racist fool as demonstrated in your earlier comments. You really expect folks to ignore personal attacks? Like I said, you don't even know me, and you certainly don't intimidate me.

Truth Hurts, fuck you and the white horse you rode into D.C. on. Why don't you move back to your hometown in your all lilly white town in middle America? Your constant comments on here shows you whinning like a white liberal who think you are superior to black people. I am not intimidated by you white boy or any white man on the planet earth. Your ancestors lynched, rape, and killed my ancestors. I agree with Howard University Dr. Francis Cress Welsing about white supremacy. Stop responding to me. My original comments were not directed at you. The topic was illegal immigration. If you don't like what others have to say, ignore their comments. Stop whinning like a little girl all the time. It's because of the white man's greed and for cheap labor, the U.S. is in a mess with illegal immigration being out of control. Black neighborhoods have suffering and been displaced in their communities and low level employment thanks to the influx of illegal aliens into the United States. Now that illegal immigration is affecting ordinary white folks, they are complaining about the influx of illegal aliens into their communities.

    Correction:

Truth Hurts, screw you and the white horse you rode into D.C. on. Why don't you move back to your hometown in your all lily white town in middle America? Your comments on here shows you complaining like a white liberal valley girl who think you are superior to black people. I am not intimidated by you white boy or any white man on the planet earth. Your ancestors lynched, rape, and killed my ancestors and the ancestors of slaves living today should get reparations from the U.S. Government. I agree with Howard University Professor Dr. Francis Cress Welsing regarding white supremacy. Read her book entitled "The Isis Papers". Stop responding to me Truth Hurts! My original comments were not directed at you. The topic was illegal immigration and Leo Alexander being a xenophobe. If you don't like what others have to say, ignore their comments. It's because of the white man's greed and for cheap labor, the U.S. is in a mess with illegal immigration being out of control. Black neighborhoods have suffered and we have been displaced in our communities and lost jobs in construction, hospitality, housekeeping, thanks to the influx of illegal aliens into the United States. Now that illegal immigration is affecting ordinary white folks, they are complaining about the influx of illegal aliens into their communities and the majority white Congress are beginning to listen with the election of Senator elect Scott Brown from Massachusetts.

WARD4DC, I can tell by your anger, you didn't get your thoughts across well to this idiot. I too am black and I am sick of these condescending whites posting on this blog. There true color came out on this blog and on the Third District's list serve about he snow ball fight last month at 14th & U Streets, NW. Many so called liberal whites used the words nigger and other racist terms to identify that black MPD Detective. If this had been blacks or black Howard University students at this location throwing snow balls at a major D.C. intersection, the whites involved last month would have called the police on them. Whites still have their double standards in this country. One for themselves and one for blacks in America.

How did this becoem the therapy session for Ward4DC? What a nutty lady she is!

@WARD4NDC aka Columbia Heights: It took you 3 tries to change "fuck you" to "screw you"? Priceless.

Skipper aka Truth Hurts, you both can go to hell. I doubt if you are a native Washingtonian white boy and have lived here all 51 years of your life. Whites like you, I don't like, because of your white supremacy complex. You are a racist cracker.

  66. #66

WARD4DC: Read your posts and then read mine. Only one of us spews racist nonsense, and it surely isn't me.

  67. #67

Truth Hurts, heres the deal, I will never make any comments to you in the future regarding your comments or opinions. Please don't direct anymore comments directly to me. If you don't like what I have to say, ignore my comments. Others have different opinions than yours. On the issue of illegal immigration, the majority of U.S. citizens don't support it and are fed up with the large influx of illegal aliens in the United States.

  68. #68

Truth Hurts - too bad in your 51 years you've lost intelligence. Your reading comprehension skills are atrocious. You can't even summarize, let alone cite my "quote", accurately. You must be a DC school graduate.

  69. #69

@Typical DC BS: My reading comprehension is great, but you're correct that I inadvertantly identified comment #37 (your post) in a response to WARD4DC's comment #38. The mistake should've been obvious given that my post was addressed to Ward4, not you. Regardless, my bad. Sorry.

@WARD4DC: Sounds reasonable. I have no problem with people expressing their opinions -- that's what blog comments are all about. And I don't condone illegal immigration, and you seemingly believe. I do, however, reject racism and hate speech. So let's move on, be civil, and squash the beef.

  70. #70

@Truth hurts: Bravo. Nice response. Still surprised so many read these comments.

Personally, I love the vitriol on these blog comments. Better to get it all out here in cyberspace. Maybe it helps in reducing rage elsewhere in our lives and we may learn something here about our fellow citizens.

    That's right, hug it out.
