Loose Lips Quotes of 2009: Ximena Hartsock

"I was mistreated. Not only me, but my entire heritage....If Marion Barry was a white person and I was a black person, there would be riots in the streets right now."

Ximena Hartsock, parks and recreation director, Oct. 10

Warring between Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and the D.C. Council reached its apex on Oct. 6, when legislators voted down Hartsock’s nomination as parks-and-rec director. Fenty and top aides had done little to whip their votes ahead of time, but afterward, the blitz was on. Hartsock wasn’t shy about retroactively playing the race card, emboldened by ugly rhetoric on display at a prior hearing on the nomination—including Barry’s declaration that majority-black Washington needs “someone who understands our culture.” But the jawing of Latino activists wasn’t enough to get Hartsock her job back.

  • Comrade Al Gonzales

It's odd to hear someone in public life tell the truth. People in DC think there's only one kind of racism, white against black. It just shows, once again, how ignorant & selfish the people of DC are.

I thought, most people from Chile were white or Caucasian? This woman looks like an Aztec Indian from Mexico are Peru.

  • Comrade Al Gonzales

Chile is mostly white. Uruguay & its capital, Montevideo, are 88% white. But, the mix is mixing everyday.

It's only throwback genes that keep us looking the way we look - e.g., a great grandpa's genes can make a baby look 100% white or 100% black, even if the parents both look black or both look white. It's like a Bears fan wearing a throwback jersey - cool, but you stand out a little amongst the others.

  • Five to Go

She is such a cry baby.

  • Truth Hurts

I'm with Hartsock. Screw Barry and his crew of racist haters.

  • Phil Deeze

While I can understand Hartsock's being upset. The part she forgot is that she did have some black support, and by implying that there would be riots in the street? She actually smeared some of the same black folks that did try to help her get onto the counsel.

It's just her shitty lucky that she was nominated by a mayor that's got his own issues with the City Council and they're in a pissing contest.

As for "Truth Hurts?" You aren't helping things much. And "Comrade Al?" Stop being such a child.

  • Truth Hurts

@ Phil Deeze: Not sure what you mean by not "helping things much". Some of your points are probably valid, but I still say screw Barry and his crew of racist haters. I have bigger issues with them than with Hartsock who'll be gone soon enough.
