Loose Lips Quotes of 2009: R. Donahue Peebles

“I don't need anyone to finance my campaign for me. I'm gonna eliminate this environment of pay-to-play."

—megadeveloper R. Donahue Peebles, Dec. 16

In the early weeks of 2009, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty looked all but invincible. His Jan. 31 campaign finance report showed nearly $2 million in the bank—a staggering sum for a race 18 months off, sure to scare off any legitimate challenger. But in the year’s waning weeks, Fenty is looking shockingly vulnerable. His quizzical behavior and softened poll numbers have attracted a guy who isn’t afraid of his massive war chest. Peebles, a 49-year-old D.C. native who parlayed his 1980s Barry connections into a coast-to-coast real estate empire, has committed as much as $5 million of his personal fortune to a campaign. And Peebles has thus far demonstrated an active mouth and a penchant for needling Fenty—boding well for the best quotes of 2010.

Run, Mr. Peebles, run. We need a rich communist to save this city. Yes, end pay to play - end it the day of your inauguration.

Peebles for Mayor - 2010. Peebles is the People's Choice!

So, the communist vote is ok with a crony-capitalist mayor, so long as he offers to buy his election?

And why not...it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

Fenty is a lightweight and has surrounded himself with a bunch of pay-to-play, sleazy scammers. I'll bet whomever told Fenty to screw Peebles on the Stevens School project regrets that one.

I would vote for Satan, before I vote for King Adrian Malik Fenty.

  • JohnGalt

Is there not at least one white person qualified to run for mayor in this city?

  • Long Time Rez

OMG, JohnGalt, you should call up Jack Evans right now and offer your services. He's been dying to be Mayor since he got on the Council.

  • Truth Hurts

I'm assuming either Peebles or Gray announced a mayoral run while I was out of town. Peebles said he'd commit before '10 if Gray hadn't done so. So which one threw down?

  • Typical DC BS

Peebles was doing the pay-to-play scam during the Barry years. Please, we don't need another washed up has-been to run this city.
