Tax scofflawism, kidney surgery, gay-marriage stance—all that was enough to accord Barry headliner status in any review of 2009. But there was more. Oh, was there ever more. Barry found himself in a Park Police lockup on the night of July 4, after an officer spotted him driving erratically, tailing a female companion who had accused him of stalking her. The charges were dropped, but the incident began as messy a chapter as Barry's had in his life. His fiery relationship with the alleged stalkee, Watts-Brighthaupt, was memorialized in a series of e-mails and voice mails, which included the quote above referring to an incident between the two at 2008's Democratic National Convention. Barry's problems deepened afterwards—when the Washington Post reported that he'd given Watts-Brighthaupt council contracts and after Washington City Paper reported on his practice of awarding millions in earmarks to nonprofits he created and controlled.
