Crime Time: The Blotter
Beginning today, City Desk will provide regular updates on crimes throughout the District.
Car Trouble: Armed suspects carjacked a Range Rover around 14th and E Streets NE on Nov. 23. When the Rover stalled about a block away due to its security system, the alleged thieves jumped out of the dead vehicle—and immediately carjacked another. "About 10 hours after the vehicle was stolen," First District Commander David Kamperin says, "it was observed being operated in the Sixth District. Officers, aware of the lookout, were able to stop the car and a juvenile subject was arrested."
Two package carriers delivered some heroism on Nov. 24. The working Joes spotted trouble at 10:25 a.m. behind the 3100 block of 14th Street NW: Perps armed with a knife were trying to carjack a driver. Though one of the alleged robbers escaped, the delivery guys kept another pinned down until police arrived. The suspect was identified as Frank Mabry, 45, of no fixed address.
A red car traveling in the 1400 block of Nicholson Street NW struck a man at 10:55 p.m. on Nov. 26. The car fled going southbound. The victim, described as "a Hispanic male adult," is in critical condition. Police are seeking information on the hit-and-run.
Locked and Loaded: A group police said consisted of "6 white males, ages 14-19 yrs, and 130-150lb/s" kicked in a door in the 4900 block of 42nd Street NW on Nov. 23 and stole a rifle.
The Metropolitan Police Department's ShotSpotter system detected gun play in the 700 block of Harvard Street NW on Nov. 26. Police responded and found three shooting victims in a Harvard Street dwelling. Two sustained non-life threatening injuries; the third, Jose Rene Rodriguez Guterrez, 31, died.
Dime Bags: MPD's Narcotics Strike Force made some busts in unspecified locations in Southeast PSAs 701, 705, and 706 on Nov. 26. Arresting 11, the cops seized $172 in cash; five $10 bags of marijuana; and 31 $10 bags of crack cocaine, for a haul worth $532.
Police were sent to the "Kennedy/Longfellow Street area" (once described as an open-air drug market) on Nov. 29, where they charged Nathan Williams with possession of cocaine, Christopher Moore with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, and Craig Campbell with possession of ecstasy.
Homicide: Officers responded shortly after midnight Nov. 29 to the 600 block of Longfellow Street NW after reports of gunfire. A 23-year-old man had already been taken to an area hospital with a gunshot wound by the time they arrived. Edwin Reyes, of the 5500 block of Seventh Street NW, was pronounced dead at 9:25 a.m.

Whoa, most of these unfortunately aren't that out of the ordinary for where they happened, but a bunch of high school kids breaking into a house and stealing a rifle in Glover Park is a bit random. Wonder what the story was there.

I happen to live on Longfellow Street, across from where the guy was shot, and am ready to get the he** out of here. I knew it was a shady area when we moved in July, but it was the cheapest place we could find in the city that accepted two dogs and a cat. Cops are on our street all the time. And, in the alleyways. And, there are always guys hanging out in front of one particular house and on the corners and I don't think they're selling Girl's Scout cookies.

The "Kennedy/Longfellow Street area" is still an open-air drug market whenever a cruiser isn't parked in front of Yums.
@MG: You moved to the wrong side of Kennedy. It's a little safer on the south side (near Jefferson, Ingraham, etc.).

I hate to be picky here but anyone who reads my blog knows my pet peeve is just labeling everything "Southeast" instead of taking the time and actaully identifying the neighborhood. The street names of these busts were included with the information on the busts which where posted on the 7D list serv. I knew exactly what busts you were talking about just reading the excerpts here. I don't know where you pulled the info for this post but the bust locations are available. In fact most of the busts occured on the 400 b/o Newcomb Street - which by the way is in the Congress Heights neighborhood.
