The idea that the minority must be protected from the majority is a tricky one to balance with the idea of democratic rule. But universal civil rights is a good case to use as a model, as majorities keep voting against gay marriage rights while courts keep upholding them. D.C.’s democratic rights are wrongly curtailed, but why should that lead to violating the principle of protecting the minority? I don’t get that.

Glad to see the link to that article about the nature of DC's tax structure. Things like the impending bag tax, while well-meaning, only add to this inequity. Not to mention the additional administrative burden (and expense) it creates.

It's time for us the citizens of the District of Columbia to clean house and take back our city. We deserve honesty and accountabaility, instead of arrogance and complicity, that we currently getting from the Mayor down to the City Council members. Just remember these are the same people that shoved a third rate baseball team and a multi-million dollar stadium down our throat. These are the same people that awarded city contracts to their friends and give grant money to non-profits that only existed on paper. The same people who give millions in AIDS money to a convicted drug kingpin and other crooks without trying to get back even a single dime of that money(Post Articles Oct. 09).

These same people who are now forcing us to pay a five cent tax per bag ( effective Jan 2010 ), for as they would like you to believe is to help clean up the Anacostia River. This action does not taking into account that the poor of this city, many whom who are on food stamps will take on the financial burden of this dumb ass tax and that those who can and will drive to Maryland and Virginia to grocery shop. I don't see a special tax on the many boats mored in southwest or on the Anacostia. You mark my words that this money will be used for something other than cleaning the Anacosta, maybe a new football or scoccer stadium or for some other dumb ass project.

We all need to stand-up and get mad and vote these bums out of office!

After 3 columns by Colbert King, and releasing the students an hour early a few weeks ago on the advice of DC police due to a credible shooting threat - it's about the Post considered the situation at Friendship Chamberlain to be worthy of a straight news story (not a diss on King's coverage, but he is on the opinion pages not news pages). Or, is it that some folks just don't want to know that news, and for other folks it's so par for the course - that folks in the middle don't get to learn about it? Scary/depressing stuff all around.
