What are you talking about regarding the DC Saturday Scholars program? Targeting kids on the cusp of proficiency has been common practice with all major school Districts (even Fairfax and Montgomery do similar targeting). Reality is that a kid the furthest behind would not get much from an 8-week Saturday program. That's not an appropriate intervention strategy for a kid that far behind. I hate when people outside of the world of education try to chime in.

And this park contracts scam is getting more and more interesting. Seems like DPR is not to blame and the real issue is with the Deputy Mayor for Planning & Econ Development. I would love to see some more investigation into Neil Albert. He's the real mastermind behind all this illegal activity.

Every time I hear the "everything is for the kids" line from Rhee, I think of "Saturday Scholars":

Re Fenty: "despite gains in test scores among D.C. students, a dramatic decrease in crime and relative financial stability in a down economy..."

Relative financial stability? For whom? Not the residents of Wards 7 & 8. Unemployment east of the river is hovering just below 30% - the FOURTH HIGHEST rate in the nation. The mayor deserves credit for gains in our schools, but he should be sharply criticized for his complete inattention to our growing unemployment challenges, which - it should be noted - are exacerbated by the fact that Fenty has distracted DOES from addressing adult unemployment by requiring DOES staff to focus 99% of their time and local resources on the more politically glitzy summer youth employment program. Would love to see a little City Paper attention to this issue...

"Says one neighbor in today's WaPo followup, 'We have a chronic problem in the neighborhood with these gangs. It's not okay for them to just come in and shoot people.'"

Really. That must be the understatement of the year.

Nationalize St Matthew's Cathedral. Turn it in to a disco. Tax people $5 every time they say, "Jesus." Sell the paintings & mosaics. Impose a 90% tax on church plate collections.

These superstitions / religions have caused society a lot of trouble & expense. Taxing the exercise of religion would both discourage inappropriate, self-defeating behavior and also raise revenue. It's a win - win.
