I really don't think that marijuana's medicinal properties should even be a part of the argument. The alcohol/marijuana comparisons should be grounds enough to show that the marijuana prohibition is a complete joke.

I liked this article, particularly the last paragraph. However, I hate that we always get so bogged up with the argument about marijuana's medicinal properties (or lack thereof). IMHO, in a free and open society that embraces the individual liberty of its citizens (that means the U.S.A., right?) it shouldn't really matter for what reason, medicinal or recreational, I choose to get blazed. Responsible, adult recreation, enjoyed in the privacy of one's home as long as it doesn't harm others, is no one's business. In that respect, the prohibition of marijuana is no different than the archaic laws against sodomy we struck down only a few years ago: puritanical and oppressive.

This has the tone of a college sophomore's "legalize it" essay. The Riggs article, I mean. Go to PubMed and look up the actual studies. Things are not as simple as either Lane or Riggs would have us believe.

Valid medicinal value, it’s a victimless crime, the War on Drugs WAY too costly, too many arrests for simple possession, tax it and use the money to pay for health insurance and to reduce the deficit. Need I say more?
