Who Needs Howard’s Homecoming When There’s the “Booty Wall”?
It's a big week over at Howard University, what with homecoming festivities and all. There's all kinds of stuff on tap: the Homecoming Fashion Show, the Homecoming YardFest, the Homecoming R&B Concert, the Homecoming Step Show, the Homecoming Kings and Queens Reception (IMPORTANT NOTE: Unlike its rival among historically black institutions, Hampton University in Virginia, which recently picked its first non-black Miss HU, Howard has an African-American queen, Kendall Isadore. Phew!).
But really, one need not attend any homecoming events at Howard to have a good time. There's always the Booty Wall. Available year-round, if you don't mind the cold.
A recent post on HU Reaction offers this rather insightful look at the wall and those who apparently frequent it:
This wall, located to the left side of the females-only dorm The Quad, is designed for underclassmen males and females to get better acquainted, so to speak. The Booty Wall epitomizes everything about the roles virgin males and unwilling females play in society. Ladies sit beside it as if they were in a gallery as males try their luck with cliché pickup lines and desperation tactics. The young male may wait patiently along this wall for days – weeks even to be accepted by one of the women who sit by it. It is a freshman’s dream to be invited inside the Quadrangle, however at best they will just be able to look inside the lobby as one of the girls go back to her room.

As a friend of mine once said, “It’s a place for students (and old ass niggas in cars) to chill with the opposite sex despite the fact that they’re broke. There’s a lot of potential on that wall, you just got to pick the right one.”

For the past few years there has been a dirty ice cream truck notorious for parking right outside by the booty wall. We haven’t bothered to look inside to see what the driver has to offer, BUT YOU KNOW IT’S NOT SELLING ICECREAM!

Also the Campus Police have been keeping a careful eye on the booty wall recently, claiming that it is now “illegal,” to sit beside it. I guess Campus Police is good at cockblocking campus-wide traditions. I thought HU was all about keeping the legacy alive?

Regardless, ALL HOWARD UNIVERSITY ALUMNI KNOW ABOUT THE BOOTY WALL! Ask your Uncle Tyrone the Q about it and he will tell you a story or two, followed by loud groans and pelvic thrusts. If an alum does not know about the Booty Wall, then you should ask for their diploma. Seriously.
My friend Tanika Davis, who used to be Tanika White when she graduated from Howard in 1995, is obviously not a real alum. "I lived in the Quad (the freshman girls' dorm) and hung out on that wall from time to time," she emailed me when I asked her about it. "But never did I call it the Booty Wall."
She thought it was just a wall!

Are there any black writers or editors at the City Paper? The piece is typical of the garabage spewed from the paper on a weekly basis. Its writers and editors think they are clever but they're idiotic and spend most of their time slapping each other on the backs for how brilliant they think they are. I also think it has to be the absolute worst local publication for its portrayal, discussion and presentation of black females. It doesnt matter if it's Wemple (hunting and pissing on the Deneen Browns of the world), Cherkis or Hesse and now this writer, they all seem to have an incredible disdain and disrespect for black women. This article is akin to the people who started to call Sasha Obama, Sassy. I'm an HU alum, and although we didn't call it the "Booty Wall" when I was there, the description is spot-on: girls would sit outside (many of whom were waiting for their boyfriends to pick them up), and guys walking or driving by in their cars on 4th street would try to holla. Why is it racist to post this? Like another poster said, every campus has a pick-up spot. Posting up on the wall in the Quad is just like how the football team all faced one way in the cafeteria so they could watch the girls carrying their trays out...Or how groups of guys used to sit in front of the B-School after it snowed to watch girls try to navigate the ice in their stiletto boots...see a trend here?

I guess it's racist because a white girl wrote it. If it had been the other way around, where a black girl was writing about sketchy tradition/practice at a predominantly, people would have been laughing their asses off. Rosie, The problem is Erika's writing seems to be significantly biased when addressing African American schools, see reporting on Hampton. Though she attended Georgetown she can't seem to write about her experience. Really, I want to invite Erika to the "wall" in the spring after the greeks come out so she can meet me and some of my friends, we are Doctors, Lawyers, Major news network money analysts, DJs, VJs, Pulitizer prize winners, major and local network journalists etc... I honestly don't see anything racist about this blog post (except maybe the ignorant comment about us having a black homecoming queen...wtf ever), I think in that sense everyone is blowing this Booty Wall business WAY out of proportion.
The only thing I'm ticked off about this article is the way the writer commented on a satirical post. Poor reporting. But most of all, she wasn't careful with her words and made it seem like she was literally inviting the rest of DC to our campus to mingle with our students. Although we're on this big ol' internet here, you have to consider the difference in readership between the Washington City Paper and the HU Reaction...
I think reposting this post was stupid in the first place, anyway. Unless something newsworthy happened in relation to the Booty Wall....this was a waste of journalism. But I'm not going to bash you, Erika. As a journalist myself...I guess people make mistakes?
Be careful next time you choose to repost a blog post. Unless it's relevant to real news, you're going to stir up pointless controversy.

Very sloppy journalism Erika to take something from some blog and report it as if it's fact. If it is, fine, outrageous post about a naughty campus tradition. But did you even check? Did you go to the wall and observe? No you did the I-checked-with-my-black-friend routine and she disagreed with you. While this doesn't qualify you for a hood, it questions the respect with which you cover a diverse community. Would you have treated a steamy little tidbit about Georgetown that put the morals of white college women into question the same way? If so, you just aren't that great of a reporter, or you've certainly lost your edge since Pulitzer came a calling. Just for the sake of your own credibility you could have at least put in the shoe leather or telephone calls in to get a quote from someone who actually had first-hand experience of this wall.

If there was a so-called "Booty Wall", I would have known about it. I went to HU for about 5 and a half years, and was probably the biggest freak on campus. I could tell you about some really ill stuff that went down at HU, but this is just fiction. And I am not giving back my degree, so there.

Just happened upon this bull-ish. I attended Howard in the mid-80s and the wall to which you refer was never called the "booty wall." What is the source for this crap? One person giving something a name does not a moniker make.
